This song is amazing. I have no idea what it means. The first verse seems to be something about leaving someone behind, maybe a child? I don't know, I feel like the "checks" he keeps referring to are about child support, but that's probably totally off-base. And then the second verse is something about a girl that he left. The line that really sticks out to me in this song is "Lightning bugs to die in jars." The whole song is eerie and really well-done. It doesn't ruin the Sufjan version, which I was afraid it might, it just adds on to it. |

| The Avett Brothers – If It's the Beaches Lyrics

This is one of my all-time favorite songs. The first line and then the line "If it's the beaches, if it's the beaches that you want, then you will have them" are absolutely amazing. I can hardly think of words that do them justice. |

i always thought this song was anti-cathedrals. i mean, maybe i misunderstood everything that was there, but doesn't it sound like he wants to go home when he goes to a cathedral? |

Yeah, dude, I'm the same as the tahwyas guy above me. This came up as the most recent comment, and all I saw was "Yep, it's about oral sex." I had to look at what this was. |

| Todd Snider – Iron Mike's Main Man's Last Request Lyrics

This song is amazing. It's about how the assistants and "main men" dedicate their lives to celebrities (Mike Tyson), and the celebrity won't even loan them $300 when they really need it. The celebrities are ungrateful for the work the assistants have put in, and don't realize how much they mean to them. |

| Todd Snider – Ballad of the Kingsmen Lyrics
| 20 years ago

This song makes various references to the power of music in society. The Kingsmen sang a simple song that launched an FBI investigation into the lyrics, and Marilyn Manson freaks old people out, but he's really just a "skinny public high school kid from Florida". He says that it's not Manson who inspired the kids (presumably the kids from Columbine) to get guns and shoot their friends. It's only Manson who's empathizing with them. Snider goes on to rant about many other faults of society, the paradoxes of church, and at the end says music is overrated sort of, and that it's really just entertainment. |

| The Ataris – Ben Lee Lyrics

I've never met these people. But on the sole basis of reading this thread, I'm a fuckload more inclined to listen to Ben Lee than the Ataris. The Ataris only really popular song was one that they didn't even write, a cover of a song that was garbage to begin with ("Boys of Summer"). At least Ben Lee's song aren't as monotonous and as uniformed as the Ataris. |

The line of "We slept in our clothes", I think is "We slept in HER clothes". Which does make an awful lot more sense. |

I've always thought Big Brother was in the 1984 sense of it. The song's incredibly good. I've got no idea what "Jackson Cannery" itself means, though. |

It was allegedly a suicide. There's a big conspiracy on whether or not he was murdered by his girlfriend or something... I'm sure if you Google Elliott Smith you'll find some of it. It's decently interesting, and the thesmokinggun.com has an autopsy, where they cite some sort of wounds on his arms as "struggle" something. I don't know. Check it out. |

| Ben Folds – Adelaide Lyrics

"I'm sure there are way worse places in South Africa and South America and, like, even the US."
That's like saying "I bet that Rwanda has a worse murder rate than Adelaide." Sure, South Africa at one point was chaotic, but they didn't have serial killers like Adelaide in one period of time. That's what bombjohn was trying to say. It's just surprisingly dark considering the song's meaning and the surrounding parts of Australia. |

I don't know. I always want to quote the "My hell is the closet" part, but I don't want it to sound like I'm coming out of the closet (because I'm not). But the song lyrics are so good, so I have to quote something, and it's hard. Usually I just use the "And my heaven is a nice house in the sky" part, but I don't know. Can anyone really clarify if it's about coming out of the closet, so I can safely put lyrics as my away message? |
