Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics 15 years ago
The civil war was not the only war that was fought like that. I'm sure many a British skirmishes were fought in that manner. It doesn't seem likely that Pink Floyd, a band made up of Brits, would sing so poignantly about the AMERICAN Civil War. The analogy does work very well, though.

I think this applies to fighting in general, not just war. There are lines in the song that suggest you could also apply this to fighting in the political forum, much like what's happening here in America between the left and the right. In the end we're all fighting ourselves, not a real enemy.

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 18 years ago
I wonder how many of the haters out there that are bashing LOTR interprations have read any of the Middle Earth back story. Not many I think. If you've read any of the back story you couldn't help but see the parellels, especially considering how Robert Plant was supposedlly heavily into it around the time many of these songs were written. I wouldn't go so far as to say this song or many of the others are directly about anything in the Middle Earth history, but there is no denying that a lot if his lyrics are heavily influenced by Plant's fascination with Tolkien's story, particularly the bridge here in Going to California.

By the way, neither Numenore nor the Grey Havens are where the elves are from. Nor are either one of these the the lands west over the sea. Numenore was the land raised by the Valar and given to the Edain (men who helped the Valar and the Eldar defeat Morgoth, the original dark lord). The Grey Havens are simply one of the the few places in Middle Earth where elves are dwelling at the time of the War of the Ring. This land of the west that Plant seems to imply would be Aman, the Undying Lands, in particular the Valinor. And the elves are not from Valinor. The Eldar awoke many many thousands of years past in the far east of Middle East in a land called Cuvinien, and later journeyed to Valinor where many broke off and actually stayed in middle earth. Valinor is the final destination for all elves, in life or death.

Bob Seger – Against the Wind Lyrics 18 years ago
I remember quite a while back when I was riding my bike to work, I was on a slight but verly long incline and the wind was blowing against me. I was struggling to keep my speed up when an older man in a old jalopy of bike with no gears, just the direct front to back gear, cruised right past me. Not really that much faster than me, but nice and steady. (I was riding a multi-speed bike, around 18 speeds, an ideal feature providing a certain advantage, on top of the fact that he was probably 3 times my age.) I noted with a sort of comical internal irony how this might look to a thirdy party. All the while the harmonic outro chorus played along in my head over and over. It always make me laugh when I think about, which usually happens every time I hear this song.

An addition to your comment notmj20:
"I also like when he talks about deadlines and commitments. he is no longer free; he comformed in exchange for not having to search for shelter again and again."

Yet he's still running against the wind.

This song strikes me as a reminder that conforming for the sake of conforming never made anybody's life easier. You'll always be runnin' against the wind, so make your life yours and stick to your guns. It'll make the struggle that much easier.

Led Zeppelin – The Battle of Evermore Lyrics 18 years ago
"johnny1031" on page 2 dated 04-17-2004, could not have stated the truth more eloquently. They are the very thoughts I was forming in head as I was reading some of these comments.

I want to add some corrections:
The Battle of Pelennor Fields was not to decide the fate of Numenor. That fate was decided thousands of years in the past, and the Numenoreans did not fair well. I can only assume that this person meant Gondor, which would still be incorrect since it was for all of Middle-Earth.

The Gray Havens, which is actually Grey Havens, was not the Undying Lands where the elves went when they "Passed in to the West". It is where they left Middle-Earth on their way to the Undying Lands. It's also called Aman, or more specifically Valinor.

By the way 'johnny', if you ever get back around to reading this, I now the Rain Song and it is indeed akin to a rare gem that nobody but you has had the pleasure of experiencing.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
While I personally don't see that this song is directly related to any of Tolkien's Middle Earth stories. It's been said that Robert Plant was a huge fan of Tolkiens. I can imagine that his passion for these Tolkien works greatly influenced his writing.

After having read some of the other stories aside for The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, I hear a lot of what can only be seen as a subconscience (if not fully intentioned) references to these stories. Particularly this song and Going to Californa. Not to mention the seeminly blatant reference in Ramble On.

There's a particular story that tells about the Downfall of Numenor. I just finished reading it today. I couldn't help but think of this song while I was reading it. I don't necessarily believe that it's actually about this story, but I can't help but think that this supposed passion for Tolkien's Middle-Earth Mythologies influenced how he told the story of this song. This visuals I get from this song just seem to click with Tolkien's story.

It might be that I'm simply making a connection that's not there. But that's why it's called my interpretation.

"Unlikely, since Hummers didnt exist back in 1993. Nice try though... "
- Orangebeaker

You should probably read up on the topic before you make a statement like that.

The Hummer went into CIVILIAN production in 1992. Strike 1...

The Hummer in military form (aka; HMMWV or HUMVEE) was used in Operation Desert Storm. In 1990... Strike 2

AM General, who originally designed and built the Hummer, began preliminary design work in 1979, beat out Lamborghini, among others, for the contract, and began production about 1985. Strike 3.....

You're out.

Black Sabbath – Planet Caravan Lyrics 19 years ago
There was a pretty cool video that went along with Pantera's version as well. If I remember correctly it was about a group of seed spores (sounds wierd right? they looked like seeds, but who knows) that escaped or were thrown out into space as their planet as it was being destroyed. They all went in different directions and the video follows a group that land on a barren planet and proceed to build the planets ecological system with there own DNA, so to speak. The re-establishing of a new ecological habitiat is most of the video until the end when the new planet they're on becomes threatened so new seeds are sent out in all directions, essentially starting the whole process again. I believe it was meant to be in the grand scale of evolutionary time.

I think that's how it all happened. It's been almost ten years since I saw the video and it was only the one time, oh, and (now don't all of you straight edges get your panties in a bunch) I was probably stoned when I saw it. But it was definitely unique and stuck with me as what I believe is a very faithful memory.

Bad Religion – Sorrow Lyrics 19 years ago
The only true Messiah who can rescue us from ourselvse is..... OURSELVES.

This is about taking responsibility for ourselves and our actions. Not relying on some fictitious figure to which we can make excuses for our stupidity and cruelty. It ultimateley stating that when we do this there will be (needless) sorrow no more.

Metallica – The Shortest Straw Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know how correct this is but Wikipedia states that the song is about the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. They were American Communists that were put in trial and excuted for suppling nuclear weapons technology to the Soviet Union. There is supposedly some so called "evidence" that they did'nt actually do it. Hence the inspiraction for the lyrics. Since Wikipedia is a public domain of sorts I don't know how authorized the information is with regards to being the inspiration for the song. Regardless, the concept of this story is the real life embodiment of the lyrics and beliefs behind the song. It is the epitomal represention of McCarthy and his witchhunting. And it's not much further from our current administration and it's "Special" laws regarding homeland security and unconstitutional prisons.

On a less morose note, this song is awsome!! One of the best on the album.

Metallica – Leper Messiah Lyrics 19 years ago
"Atheism is actually a form of psychological repression"

That has go to be one fo the most ignorant statements I've ever heard. It's typical of those types or follow religion or other peoples ideas blindly because they can't think for themselves. Try to find a psychologist or psychiatrist out there that separates religion from his or her work (aka a real psycologist or psychiatrist) that actually believes a ridiculous statement like.

This is good song. It's hard to tell what Hetfield was acutally thinking when he wrote this, but it goes with the whole theme of the album. Almost every song on the album talks about letting others (people, religion, society, etc.) dictate your life and beliefs for you and doing everything in your power not to let them. It's a good way to live life. We all have a mind and heart that has allows you to think and feel for ourselves and it feels great to do so. It's the key to a happy life without living on the crutches of others around you.

The real psychological repression is being afraid to make your own decisions about your own heart and mind.

Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics 19 years ago
Simply by the way he is singing the different verses it seems as though he is explaining to the listener what the general relationship/conversations with his father are like. He is quoting his father (as he sings softly) and then (as he sings louder, as in more painfully) he is telling the listener how he feels about his father's thoughts/words. The details I can't even begin to pinpoint, that part is up to the listner to interpret. Beautiful song any way you look at it.

Neil Diamond – Shilo Lyrics 19 years ago
I looked up the name Shilo(h) to see what it means. There were a lot of similar but slightly different meanings. Basically it all boiled down to provider of peace and/or a reference to the messiah (or Jesus depending on if your Jewish or not). Being that Neil Diamond is Jewish (I think) it would seem that it would be more along the lines of provider peace, and that he might have chosen the name in the song for that reference. Maybe he didn't necessarily have the imaginary friend (I don't know for sure, maybe "johnboysv" read this in an interview, in which case I am way off) so much as it's a reference to himself as a lonely kid and finding peace with his faith and religion that in turn helped him through the hard times of solitude. When he grew up he found his stride and didn't lean so much on that aspect. In the end he simply used the story here as a symbolic piece, took a little creative license to make it more acceptable for the masses.

Then again, I'm probably just rambling and finding things that aren't there. In either case, like "johnboysv" says, Neil does rock. I wish I was able to see Hot August Night, but I'm too young, hell I wasn't even born for another 5 years after it happened.

Nick Drake – Pink Moon Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't think so much as death as much as the inevitable. Like how trying to hide the truth and being afraid to admit it to yourself always comes back on you and getting you in the end. Like "fromthemoring" offered about renewal and the coming of spring, I think the song suggests that the Pink Moon is coming and it will get you no matter who you think you are, and that its up to you to embrace it and do away with the old lies you have been keeping to yourself and looking at who you really are. Only then will your "spring" come to you.

Anyway, that's just my interpratation, what do I really kown?? It was a different time back then.

Remy Zero – Fair Lyrics 21 years ago
I am not sure it is spefically about a women as much as just a loved one in general, at least in the context of the movie. I think in the movie it's referencing the relationship with is father when he says that though they may never be happy, at least they can try to be OK. I *think* that's what TRAUMITTIZING is talking about. However, I don't remeber what part of the movie the song was in, so I could be way off. Maybe it has something to do with how he feels about himself and his issues with his mother's accident & death.

Either way, when I first heard the song, it hit hard and I could feel the loss and despair and frustration and love and amazement and hope the artist seemed to be trying to convey to the listener about the person he is singing this song to. WOW!! It almost made me dizzy
