Bauhaus – Exquisite Corpse Lyrics 17 years ago
Each member wrote a verse. They also did this for another song called "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash"

Bauhaus – 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash Lyrics 17 years ago
Another example of Exquisite Corpse. A game in which a person draws a head, another draws the body, and a third person finishes the feet. You aren't allowed to see what the other person drew until the last person is done.

Except they did it with verses.

They also created another song by the same name with this writing style. ("Exquisite Corpse")

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue) Lyrics 18 years ago
"They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know"

Sounds like the locals or the papers nicknamed her "The Wild Rose," because they found her where the roses grow, which is where Nick promised to take her. She must've been an unidentified body, and in the after life she is trying to reach out to them to tell them her name.

Disgusting, but beautiful.

Peter Murphy – Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem Lyrics 18 years ago
Beautiful song. Marlene was an actress, I believe, from the 1920's, but I'm not sure what it means.

Stone Temple Pilots – Vasoline Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, could sound like firing off knuckle-babies with vaseline and porno. "what's real, and what's for sale?" "Blew a kiss and tried to take it home," trying to pick chicks up.

"Two times and it has rendered me punch drunk and without bail," he failed to pick up any chicks so he goes home to masturbate.

Sucks.

Q Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the beat.

one ... one ... one two ... one two ...

"I'm flying over you" has two meanings. Imagine it visually. A horse can run and run, but it will never be able to fly. imagine a bird soaring over it.

The other way to see it, is in a Christian versus Atheist way (example). Christians believe in life after death, and Atheists believe that death is final and there's nothing to look forward to "He said 'All things pass into the night'."

The Christian says, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong." Because he has eternal life in heaven to look forward, too.

I'm not being biased either, it was just an example. This could also be compared to reincarnation, but it really makes less sense in the visual department.

Peter Murphy – Godsends Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it may be about a cross-dresser. "An inward girl."

"It's called a feedback; It's fierce; It's not from above; it's fierce" to me, means that God won't see this as such a bad thing, but everybody else judges you for it.

My favorite part is when he sings "hallowed be her name." Which means to set apart her name from her male persona.

Peter Murphy – Strange Kind Of Love Lyrics 18 years ago
The way I interpret this song is by a love triangle. The girl must choose ("either side left or right") between two guys. "There is no middle ground."

Could be just between a guy and a girl, but the line "for us to walk" suggests that there's two decisions and that one of them is going to love her for it and the other is going to hate her for it.

Once, again, I relate this to one of my own experiences.

Peter Murphy – Never Man Lyrics 18 years ago
I relate to this song a lot.

To me, it means that you've hit a real low point in your life where you're as lonely as you can get, and your self-esteem is wipe-clean, but you have hope that sometime in the future this will change ("dreaming of a better time to come
When better days").

Tom Waits – Who Are You Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I can never get tired of the melody, it's frickin' beautiful. I think it's about an ex-girlfriend who he considers a whore. At least, that's how I relate to this song. Damn whore ex-girlfriends.

The Fall of Troy – Tom Waits Lyrics 18 years ago
Tom Waits is a person, not a band, sine wave. He's an incredible singer/songwriter, in my personal opinion. Obviously, they got their name from the Tom Waits' song, and this is their way of paying him back. I think the meaning of this song may be something in response to the lyrics of his song, "The Fall of Troy."

Could also be Damien Thorn from The Omen, which was released in 1976.

The Cure – Home Lyrics 19 years ago
A b-side off of "Friday I'm In Love," and also available on Join The Dots. The intro to this song was reused for another song of theirs; I think it's off Kiss Me... Can't remember. But anyways, the words "I couldn't love you more" were also recycled for "The End of The World."

The Cure – This Twilight Garden Lyrics 19 years ago
On Join The Dots, it says its the b-side of "High," but they could've used it for "...Elise" too. To me, the song is amazing. If you think about it, he lifts his lips and hands off of her, and he is reassuring her that it's only for a moment, that no one will ever take her place. He describes the environment as it melds into them, and the spaces between them are corrected by the beauty of the world around.

The Cure – The Holy Hour Lyrics 19 years ago
As the opener for "Faith," the album in which Robert Smith wrote about when the band's relatives were dropping like flies, this song deals with the death, and a lot to do with repentance for sins.

"promise for salvation"
"wordless scream at ancient power" = prayer to God
"cannot hold what you devour" = God taking souls/lives

The Holy Hour could very well be the last hour we have to live.

The Cure – Doubt Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is from the album Faith, which is the opposite of "Doubt." The album also features a title-track, which seems to be the other side to the same coin as "Doubt."

So in essence,

"Faith" is about holding it all in.
"Doubt" is about letting it all go.

In "Faith," he talks about his misery, and as a clown in a crowd, just sits like a mountain or something to that effect, and in the ends, just ends up with nothing but faith that maybe things will change.

In "Doubt," he lets it all go, and is "drained of everything but pain." In the song, he kills someone over and over, again, and he can't help it.

In all, it seems like the relationship he held during this time, was on the verge of destruction as he was feeling like shit, and bringing her down with him, so he had one of two choices: continue hurting her until she leaves him ("Doubt"), or he stays and waits it out ("Faith").

Slipknot – The Heretic Anthem Lyrics 19 years ago
Cartman14, Slipknot is one of those "little sell out pussy bands" you so loathe so much.

I wish it were intention that 555 was the area code for Hollywood and 666 was a way of saying, "I'd rather be 666, than you plastic fucks of 555 area code," unfortunately, this is not the case.

This is definately nu-metal, with the rapping in this song, which is so bad. Leave it to the black boys, you masked freaks.

Speaking of which, I do like the masks.

Joy Division – New Dawn Fades Lyrics 19 years ago
meep> I would normally curse you out and call you an idiot for assuming that any song written by Ian Curtis was suicidal, but it sure could be about suicide, and thinking back to what you leave behind.

But, it could also be about a breakup (hence the two voices: one angry voice, and one who cried).

Basically, I think this song is saying "I've had enough" and he's looking to leave it all behind, but there is a sense of caution, because he knows its the end of whatever the situation (life, relationship, etc.), and there's no turning back, and he blames himself for not being able to cope with the situation, so he takes the easy way out.

The Cure – The Figurehead Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about rebound-chicks. The girls you use up and taint the relationships you had prior to the rebound. One you "press your stained face," and "touch her eyes" of sympathy, "you will never be clean again."

The rebound will "listen for a short while."

The "sharp and open" means the vuneraiblity he has, and is willing to take anything, or anyone, that will accept him.

He blantantly mentions it in the line: "I lose myself in Chinese art and American girls" and "I will lose myself tomorrow."

And when he fakes his plea to sleep, "please let me sleep," he waits for her to pass out (and since he can't sleep, as he previously stated) and "slips down the window," he turns around and looks onto the bed, and sees the passed out rebound-chickand thinks she looks like a "freshly squashed fly," and thinks "you mean nothing" in comparrison to what he had just lost.

It's about Michael Myers of the Halloween series. The Thorn theory was described in Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers.

I know what you're thinking, H6 came out in 1995 and this album 1986, so it's impossible.

It's true. It is impossible. But this song really does remind me of Michael Myers. Especially 'murderous desire' behind the eyes. I love you all. PUH-eace! In the Mid-DUL East!

Joy Division – Twenty Four Hours Lyrics 19 years ago
My favorite lines: "Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep."

Technically, he's just saying, "Everyone, leave me the fuck alone."

Friends say: "Let's take a ride out, see what we can find."

His response:
"A valueless collection of hopes and past desires."

Which I translate as, "Nothing matters anymore."

Definately a song about a broken heart.

Joy Division – Atmosphere Lyrics 19 years ago
It is pissing me off that all you people who post comments about Ian Curtis' lyrics believe that it is centered around his epilepsy and his suicidal tendancies.

You guys are judging him for two things that made him "famous."

He doesn't write about his suicidal tendencies, it's his way of thinking that led him to suicide. He saw things in a different light, the "cup half-empty perspective."

The only song that I can think of that he would talk about epilepsy (and he isn't even talking about his own, is "She's Lost Control," where he feels empathy with this chick with his particular medical issue).

What do I think this song is about?

One of Ian's friends once said that Ian's face always had a look that said, "get away from me." The important line to read is: "Your confusion, my illusion, worn like a mask of self-hate, confronts and then dies," which Schr4nz explained pretty well.

It's all about the tough-guy, killer fascade that we develop to keep people away, but at the same time, all we really want is company.
