I think this song is about herself. Marie is the person she wants to be; all dressed up, looking cute, always perfect, has lots of guys and friends, and is well-known. But even though she always has people around her, she is still so lonely and she doesn't understand why and she's asking herself questions. "She says she's lonely, how could she be? every night she's got company" So she's trying to live her life as this "Marie" her alter-ego but she's still unhappy "Oh Marie, I sure hope you're happy, oh Marie, what about me?" everyone thinks she has a great life and she tells herself she does too- but she's still lonely and isn't quite sure what she is looking for. |

"I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm a gonna love you anyhow" i love this line. its like when you meet someone and you share a connection but then you don't stay in touch or anything but you regret it totally. in his case though, it was for his mom and its beautiful. its so emotional and sad. elliott smith lives on as a god of music for me. rest in peace. |

| this is one of the best, although they are all awesome. this is about a guy or Chirs having a moment alone with himself reflecting and regretting something he did(perhaps the last lie he told?). he remembers how it used to be, when it was better "remembering the open arms of two years ago". things are holding him back blocking his way like trees as a metaphor. "'cause if there weren't those trees I think I could see for miles" such a great song. doesn't it give u a summer feeling? | |
