Michael Penn – No Myth (Romeo in Black Jeans) Lyrics 19 years ago
The singer likes a woman but the woman rebuffs him by insisting on a friendship instead. Yet, the woman is not acting as a friend anymore. In the end, the singer suggest perhaps this woman is not currently in a serious relationship.

> So, she says its time she goes
> but wanted to be sure I know
> she hopes we can be friends
> I think yeah, I guess we can say hi

I modified the lyric from "I" to "hi". I think it makes more sense. Basically, it's the usual "let's be friends" bit. Yet, she makes it difficult for a new friendship as this is an awkward situation for both of them. He agrees.. sure we can still just say "hi".

> but didn't think to ask her why
> she blocked her eyes and drew the curtains
> with knots I've got yet to untie

Yet, he isn't sure why she has made it so difficult. He is shut out of her life after he suggested to bring their relationship to the next level.

> (Chorus)
> what if I were Romeo in black jeans
> what if I was Heathcliff, its no myth
> maybe she's just looking for
> someone to dance with

What if I were a tragic love character like Romeo? What if I was Heathcliff (from Wuthering Heights, yet another tragic love character). Maybe she just is not looking for major relationships now (and probably does not care for melodrama).

> See, it was just too soon to tell
> and looking for some parallel
> can be an endless game

It was too early to tell if the relationship could have worked out. Looking for some hidden messages could be an endless game.

> We said goodbye before hello
> my secrets she will never know
> and if I dig a hole to China
> I'll catch the first junk to Soho

Basically the relationship ended before she got to really know him even as a friend. She will never know him. Not sure on the China and Soho reference. China being the far out, exotic place. And Soho being a small office / home office environment ilke in NYC. Perhaps he can't forget about her?

> (Chorus)
>
> Sometime from now you'll bow to pressure
> some things in life you cannot measure by degrees
> I'm between the poles and the equator
> don't send no private investigator to find me please
> 'less he speaks Chinese
> and can dance like Astaire overseas

Not sure on this part. My best guess is she will succumb to peer pressure to find some "big shot". But, he matters not since life is not always measured by "degrees" (as in college degrees).

This plays well into his "between the poles and the equator" which is normally guaged by degrees as well. (via longitude and latitude).

But if she realizes her loss later on, try not to find him unless she has gained in worldly cultures such as being able to speak Chinese and dancing like Fred Astaire.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Something's Always Wrong Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about a man who is trying to get in between another man/woman relationship. The woman insists he will break up her current relationship, but something is always wrong and it never happens.

> Another day I call and never speak
> And you would say nothing's changed at all
> And I can't feel much hope for anything
> If I won't be there to catch you when you fall

The nothing's changed at all is the apparent breakup attempt. Nothing has happened. The singer does not feel much hope for a new relationship to begin if he cannot be there for her when she falls (has a falling out in her current relationship).

> Again
> It seems we meet
> In the spaces
> In between

They meet when the woman's current boyfriend is not around, hence the spaces of time in between.

> We always say
> It won't take long
> But something's always wrong

Both claim to want a new relationship together and she promises it won't take long before she breaks up with her current boyfriend, but something is always wrong and nothing ever happens.

> Another game of putting things aside
> As if we'll come back to them sometime

The usual shell game. The woman does not want to break it off with her current boyfriend. Puts aside little situations or problems that should be resolved, but she does not.

> A brace of hope
> A pride of innocence
> And you would say something has gone wrong

Whenever there is a tiny chance... she still can't get it to go through. She either still has strong feelings for her current boyfriend or she is using and abusing the singer.

New Order – True Faith Lyrics 19 years ago
It has already been validated from Bernard Sumner himself that this song is about drug addiction. Here is the breakdown.

> I feel so extraordinary
> Something's got a hold on me
> I've got this feeling I'm in motion
> A sudden sense of liberty

The singer is getting high.

> I don't care 'cos I'm not there
> And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
> Again and again I've taken too much
> Of the thing that costs you too much

The singer is quite carefree now, but the drug is costing him too much probably in both time and money.

> *I used to think that the day would never come
> I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun
> My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
> To the childhood I lost replaced by fear
> I used to think that the day would never come
> That my life would depend on the morning sun

He never thought that his life would be totally dominated by drugs.

> When I was a very small boy
> Very small boys talked to me
> Now that we've grown up together
> They're afraid of what they see

Actually, a neighborhood friend of mine turned into a drug addict and changed dramatically. He was no longer the same guy we knew, and the others was pretty shocked at what happened to him. It's quite a transformation.

> That's the price that we all pay
> Our valued destiny comes to nothing
> I can't tell you where we're going
> I guess there's just no way of knowing

The price of drugs is that you have no future. There is no way for them to know precisely what their future is anymore ... if any.

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle Lyrics 19 years ago
The singer is in a Bizarre Love Triangle. He loves one woman, who is now his ex-girlfriend. He is also in a relationship with another, new woman. However, the singer is not certain if he really does love the new woman or not. He wishes to go back to his ex-girlfriend and waits for her to say "come back to me!" He fears that if he makes any action he might hurt his current girlfriend.

> Every time I think of you
> I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue

Everytime I think of my ex-girlfriend, I get a shocked (probably by the fact that he laments over his lost relationship).

> It's no problem of mine
> But it's a problem I find
> Living a life that I can't leave behind

It isn't a problem of his (but it really is if you look at it). He is living a life that he cannot leave behind. He wants to live a life with his ex-girlfriend... he can't put the past behind him. He is a past dweller.

> But there's no sense in telling me
> The wisdom of the fool won't set you free

You can tell the singer that "let go, she is no longer your girlfriend, go on with life." But try telling that to anyone who is deeply in love. Love is blind and the singer still wishes to be with her despite the fact it is "wrong" and nonsensical.

> But that's the way that it goes
> And it's what nobody knows
> well every day my confusion grows

No one really knows why we do these illogical things for love. Every day the internal rift between the ex-girlfriend and new girlfriend confuses the singer more and more. He loves his new girlfriend, doesn't he? Yet, he still desires his ex-girlfriend.

> Every time I see you falling
> I get down on my knees and pray
> I'm waiting for that final moment
> You say the words that I can't say

The singer hopes the ex-girlfriend will fall (i.e. get into a bad situation with her current boyfriend). The final words are "come back to me" or "I love you"... basically he wants his ex-girlfriend to make the move.

> I feel fine and I feel good
> I'm feeling like I never should

At this point the singer mentions how he is with another girl. He feels fine and great. But he regrets his decision.

> Whenever I get this way
> I just don't know what to say

Whenever he thinks about his love triangle, he is confused. He isn't sure what to say ... he isn't sure which girl he really loves as he still has feelings for both.

> Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday

Of course, he wishes everything was back to square one. Him being back with the ex-girlfriend and the new girlfriend never meeting him... everyone all happy with no problems.

> I'm not sure what this could mean
> I don't think you're what you seem

He is still confused, and he isn't sure if the new girlfriend is really someone who should be his girlfriend.

> I do admit to myself
> That if I hurt someone else
> Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be

The implication here is that to hurt someone else means he is going to be more serious with another relationship. However, in doing so this seals the deal that he may never get back with his ex-girlfriend.

This somewhat contradicts my other statements, but I think it is implied that he is "hanging out" with someone else new. He should move on with his life, but he holds back because he hopes his ex-girlfriend will come back to him. If he becomes more serious with his new friend, then he dooms the old relationship forever. He fears this commitment... and thus is in the Bizarre Love Triangle.

Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about a man who lost his loved one to another man. He is quite jealous and wishes to win back her love in an unorthodox manner. However, in the end the poor man could not even start his car so he cannot begin his fantasy to regain his ex-girlfriend. A dreamer who fails yet again even with his most fantastic plans.

> Tell me do you think it'd be all right
> If I could just crash here tonight

He wants to stop by her place... and crash. (sleep over).

> You can see I'm in no shape for driving
> And anyway I've got no place to go

He is in no shape for driving which implies he is fatigued OR drunk. Given that the writer of this song (who committed suicide) had drinking problems it is more likely the latter than the former.

> And you know it might not be that bad
> You were the best I'd ever had

You were my "true love".

> If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
> I might not be alone

Some incident in the past occurred where it was clearly the singer's fault. He admits to this mistake and believes he would still be with her if he had not done so.

> Tomorrow we can drive around this town
> And let the cops chase us around

We can go drive around and go wild. Basically, live dangerously in a wild and exciting way. This isn't terribly romantic, so it implies a true sense of desperation.

> The past is gone but something might be found
> To take its place...hey jealousy

Hopefully, instead of dwelling on the past mistakes, concentrate with a new future, a new slate.

> And you can trust me not to think
> And not to sleep around
> If you don't expect too much from me
> You might not be let down

He promises they will not fall into the common pitfalls of most common relationships. Pathetically, he also mentions he does not have much to offer.

> Cause all I really want is to be with you
> Feeling like I matter too

He is desperately in love and wishes for validation and acknowledgement from his loved one.

> If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
> I might be here with you
> Tomorrow we can drive around this town
> And let the cops chase us around
> The past is gone but something might be found
> To take its place...hey jealousy

> She took my heart
> There's only one thing I couldn't start

Yes, she still holds a special place in his heart.
The final twist....

There is only one thing; I could not start [the car].

He cannot start the car, which implies he has not maintained his car well. This somewhat implies his promises are quite empty and he really has little to offer.

This further reinforces the song is the ramblings of a drunk man (or a fallen man). The most sane of individuals realizes this plan would NEVER sway a woman, but he is so pathetic and desperate he is willing to try anything.

In the end, he cannot even try his act of desperation.
