Project 86 – Safe Haven Lyrics 19 years ago
No, that's not it.

This song is saying that there is more to life, and that it's worth any pain and loneliness it might bring to take it to heart:

"If I've said it once, I'll say it twice, I'll say it for all eternity
I'll find all the comfort that I need inside this bleeding"

"I'm just a stranger here, despite your everything
I'm not attached to your world of disease"

We are living in the same world. From a Christian viewpoint, we realize that a lot of people reject Christians for what they believe and Christianity in general. The solace is that "we're the ones shimmering."

Second Corinthians deals with this a bit in chapter 5: "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling."

There's more to life, and this song

Project 86 – A Shadow On Me Lyrics 20 years ago
"Can you see (You're the only home I know) A shadow on me calling me to leave."
In 2 Corinthians 5 it says how we are just living here in "tent" and that we groan to be in heaven where we belong. It's like we were made to live with God and he is the "shadow on me calling me to leave." Until then though we still need to live loving Christian lives.

"With coupons in the Sunday paper, they came from coporate brains"
Yes, I'm pretty sure this song is talking about corporate America and how much it influences us. This song is a big jab at them (among other things).

Project 86 – Oblivion Lyrics 20 years ago
We think that we are safe and comfortable in our world right here but really it's just an "Oblivion"

"From somewhere far, far away:
(I Will avenge, I will repay)"
This is what lot's of people would say to do. Get revenge, get back at people who treat you poorly. But that's someplace "far, far away"

"A distant voice from some familiar place
(Drive it home in me, pull it out from me)"
Although this message seems small "distant" is feels "familiar" and resonates with us. This is really the way to live.

Andrew sings "Will I find home in
This beautiful oblivion?
No meaning
No solace
No comfort
No justice
These thoughts I've held in failure
My paper champion, false savior

'You think the answer lies within
When your heart betrays you?'"
Lot's of times we think that we are at home here in this "beautiful" earth with live in but this song says that's just an oblivion. There isn't really anything of substance. We want to be independent and trust our heart but what's the point: "You think the answer lies within
When your heart betrays you?"

"Let go the anchor
Let got the deadweight"
We don't have to try to get back at everyone who has wronged us. We can just let go of that "anchor" holding us there.

Project 86 – Chapter 2 Lyrics 20 years ago
Chapter 2 is your new life when you become a Christian:
"New day springs light on the burdened, the downcast"
The new day brings meaning to the lives of the "burdened, the downcast"

"I long for the coming of chapter two
To put an end to this cycle of backlash"
We don't have to be stuck in sin, we can now be forgiven. The "cycle of backlash" can be broken.

"So I start where the last chapter ended"
We are still the same person that we were before, we just have new meaning now. You don't just all of a sudden become perfect but you have "started a new chapter" in your life that you can grow from.

"But the veil has been lifted, my thoughts are sifted"
The bible says we were "darkened in our understanding" and that we look as though "through a dirty mirror". I think that's near the end of Corinthians 13. It's like we now have new eyes. We see people who are hurting and want to help them, we see sin in our live and have a desire to change.

"Every wrong is righted"
When Jesus died on the cross, he died for our sins so that we could be forgiven. This doesn't mean that all of our sins are just forgiven but if we confess that we've been wrong God will forgive our sins (no matter what).

"So let your face consume my mind, right"
The meaning of a Christian means "Christ-like" so our goal is to look at Jesus (let his face "consume our minds" if you will) and live our lives as Jesus would.

"Hair standing on end, it’s sent forth
Is this the end I was always meant for?"
It's gripping to think about Christianity. If Jesus really is God, and the things he said were true, they've got life-changing impact. C.S. Lewis sums it up when he said, "Christianity, if false is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important." If Christianity is really true, it's "the end I was always meant for"

"I still long for the taste of better days long ago
Long past, so dead to me but yet
Here it is in the palm of my hand to see"
When we become a Christian the bible says we become dead to our old self. However, it is still who we 'were,' we can still see it "in the palm of our hands." Some Christians would say to forget about your whole life before you became a Christian. Not only is that impossible, but it's unreasonable. Just because we've become a Christian doesn't mean we should sever all ties to our past. We still have friends who haven't heard about God. We still have our same jobs with the same co-workers. Our lives should change for the better ("witness the birth of a new beginning").

"I see my fear begin fading"
We no longer have to be afraid of dying or of failure. Not that we shouldn't be safe or should take reckless risks but we know that God is there.

"Breathe on me for my new beginning"
This last line is like a prayer. 'God, I've made this decision, give me your strength so I can live the life you want me to.'

Project 86 – A Fruitless End Ever Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is about destructive relationships that bring both parties down ("Together we can find new ways to drown"). Sometimes people get into relationships with people because it makes their own lives feel less depressing ("Your sadness is my reason to forget what lies inside").

It's a tough balance between wanting to help people and getting tied up in their problems. Soon you don't have any time or strength to live your own life.

"Your ever wayward eyes... Will be her demise"
I think I agree with the meaning of this song. Usually something like our "wayward eyes" seem like just a personal issue, not involving anyone else. But, when we act on what we think it's going to have consequences that we can't take back ("She prays for the hourglass to flip and reverse").

It's a sad moment when someone goes from their naive, innocent view of themselves ("benign sense of self") to a revealing image ("Now she has your eyes") that they can go back from ("Celebrating her exit").

"I never have to pretend I love you"
That's pretty intense. That's what I want my relationship with my (future) wife to be like. I don't ever want to have to pretend. I just want it to be real. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there's lot's of work to a great relationship (you can't just give up), but it's something to aspire to.

Dogwood – 1983 Lyrics 21 years ago
It's tough looking back at our dreams and aspirations that we had when we were kids. Those were the things we wanted to do before we had to think about other "important" considerations (how much money we'd make, whether our boss would always be around, how many girls would be in those classes in university). Perhaps some of our dreams weren't realistic enough to be viable career choices but I don't think that means we should just ignore them. We can take the desire that those dreams embodied and use them to guide our choices in the present.

Dogwood – Seismic Lyrics 21 years ago
"Instead of sinking / It's got me thinking"
He realizes that perhaps he has been thinking about things in the wrong light.

"How could I be wrong when I am right?"
This is a feeling that so many of us feel. I remember one guy saying "We think of ourselves as moral people. So, if we do something (even something bad) we think to ourselves, 'I did it, so it must be moral' and then we justify it in our minds." We need to be right in our actions so in our minds we justify our actions.

"I'll never know, we hear the truth and turn away"
This is something I'm always a bit scared of deep down, that I'll miss out on the truth because I ignored it. I think that's a pretty significant fear for lots of people (maybe not in so many words, but still a fear). I think it's important for us as people to search for the truth.

"We take and we don't give / Live how we want to live / And no one wants to lie / But we all have to lie"
Lots of time we just go along with things because it's too hard to go fight against them. There are two important "althoughs" here though (and they're both different). Although it's the reality of the way things happen, we don't always want to accept it. And although, it's the reality of the way things happen, we have to let it stay that way.

Hangnail – Carry Me Lyrics 21 years ago
This is the attitude that we as Christians need to have. We shouldn't always be trying to do things our way but we should be seeking what God would do "Open ears await a still and quiet voice."

We shouldn't be dead set in our ways but rather "ready to make any change required of me."

I guess the idea is that we don't always know where we're going and we don't always have all the answers but the one thing we can depend on is God. This song is a prayer to him asking for him to carry us.

Hangnail – Worthless Lyrics 21 years ago
This is a song that really made me think about how I value things.

"We must hold the wealth of the world, loosely in the palm of our hands"
These guys aren't saying that it's wrong to have things. Rather, they are pointing out that we shouldn't put too much value on them (hold on to them loosely). When it all comes down to it, there's only one thing really worth holding on to, one thing that will always be here and that's God.
