The Felice Brothers – Frankie's Gun Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought, actually, that it was "that's for the way to kingdom come" - and that, therefore, by "rock" he meant cocaine. This would be either so that she could sell it or use it to forget about his death. But I actually really like mntecky's interpretation too. And, like kjoyo says, by "mama" he probably doesn't literally mean his mother.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Joy in Mudville Lyrics 19 years ago
As has been stated several times, this song is clearly not about a girl. It seems strange that people always try to make songs mean something about love, when a lot of times they're not.

It's clearly about Lou Reed. "To a brownstone, up three flights of stairs" is from the Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man." It's common knowledge that Lou Reed did a lot of drugs (I'm Waiting for the Man is about waiting for a heroin dealer on a New York street).

Lou Reed spent a lot of time with Andy Warhol, and there were always parties going on, hence the "trust fund hipsters were casing the room chock full of amphetamines." '66 was about the year that all of this hit its peak.

Lou's voice is definitely full of "gloomy disruption," and all the "poets upstate" clearly regarded him as "the king."

I love this song.

Rilo Kiley – It's a Hit Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't necessarily take the chimp reference to relate directly to George Bush - Jenny doesn't write lyrics that pointless. I think she's really just criticizing the politcal system in general, saying that any chimp could run for office and go to war. I also don't see why a song that emphasizes the evils of hypocrisy is necessarily uninteresting. In poetry or song, the matter is less of what is said than how it is said. But even still, she brings up good points.
Overall, I'd say it's a good song and surely not the "weakest song Jenny has written."

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The High Party Lyrics 19 years ago
just a small detail, but he says,
"Than being too drunk to turn the lights out
And too tired to drink more?"

plus, it makes a little more sense that way.

Commander Venus – My Other Car Is a Space Ship Lyrics 19 years ago
Little things:

It's "...the windshields of the cars that sit in the back lot..."

And I'm almost positive instad of
"over the entrance feeding the egos of the perched,on top of the cars."
that it's really
"the roar of the engines feeding the egos of those perched on top of the cars"

And I'm pretty sure that Thejesstheory is right, that it's "not that you'd notice, not that I'm standing"

and "stop before i stop and call.
run off to the phone with a load of cash... "

and "it won't take long,
but they'll all disappear."

Modest Mouse – Baby Blue Sedan Lyrics 19 years ago
To clarify,
"all the eunuchs, they were standing in rows singing, 'please stud us out just as fast as you possibly can'"

Traditionally, if a young male could sing well before he hit puberty, he would be castrated so to preserve his voice. A "stud" is an animal, such as a bull, that is kept especially for mating. So to "stud out" is to put out a bull (or horse, etc.) for the intent of breeding. So in this song, Isaac is just adding humor by saying that the eunuchs are standing there singing, demanding that they be studded out. This is impossible, given that they are castrated.

It's incredibly clever.

I suppose the song could relate to a prom, as was mentioned - that would fit, but Isaac doesn't seem the type to write about high school days. But the "white suit" would obviously be the formal attire for the dance and the "baby blue sedan" referring to a more or less shoddy means of transportation to the dance, hence, "and I am doing the best that I can." Then it leads into the end of this dance, "sad song, last dance, and no one knew who the band was" - pretty self-explanatory. Someone he knew, Henry, was probably a terrible dancer, and stood stiff and didn't really move much, like a wooden Indian.

It all fits, but seems unusual that he would write about something like that.
