Josh Turner – Long Black Train Lyrics 13 years ago
Gold Star Deli, stop the heresy. There's nothing in the Bible that says "God helps those who help themselves." In fact, God's power is made perfect in weakness. If you say otherwise you are diminishing the power of His Grace. God helps those who know they can't help themselves!

"Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God..." 2 Corinthians 1:8-9

Surely this is a parody of Bowie?

CAPS LOCK -> OFF = GOOD

It sounds like someone needed help but didn't get it, so they turned to destructive self-medication instead. It could be drugs, or self-harm, or an eating disorder, or alcohol, or anything that is addictive and leads to a vicious cycle of depressive thoughts and a defeated state of mind. Once you're there, it seems like there's no way back.

(I don't think it's necessarily heroin, though that would be one form of abuse)

Does anyone know what the muttered line after the first chorus is?

Bernard Fanning – Thrill Is Gone Lyrics 17 years ago
He discovered someone new while visiting Spain. He cheated on his partner of 12 years. He decided the Spanish lady was better for him anyway. They are now married.

(note: I can only confirm the last statement - the rest is mere filling in the gaps)

For the reference to Spain, check out Bless My Soul, by his band, Powderfinger.

Powderfinger – bless my soul Lyrics 17 years ago
Let's put the pieces together...

We know that:
a) Bernard (lead singer) married a Spanish lady approx. 2 years after the release of this song.
b) He also saw the end of a 12 year relationship around the same time.
c) He recently married a Spanish lady.

"Nobody knows just what happened to me there in Spain."
No, Bernard, but we can surely hazard a guess!

What if you discovered someone special there and in so doing awoke to the fact that your existing relationship was dead in the water? Maybe you cheated. That would explain songs like Thrill is Gone (artist: Bernard Fanning) where you wrote lyrics like

"Sure was a hell of a mistake I made
But I sure am glad that I made it
No way for a grown man to behave
More the act of a teen opportunist
I stand accused of losing my head"

and

"I can sense trouble just around the bend
And it's all been my kind of making
I can't carry on with all this pretence
When it's clear that my love has been fading
I stand accused of the things I said"

and

"It's not so much that the thrill is gone
Just a cleaner, sweeter, brighter thrill has come along".

All right, we've got the idea. Bless My Soul wasn't some random Powderfinger song, but one of the most meaningful you've ever written.

It's about Jesus, isn't it? The flame in his heart is the Spirit of God in him. Unconditional love is refering to how God loved us while we were still sinners. Knowing his creator from "up above" makes his life complete. "Before you I was blind" - spiritually blind, as in Amazing Grace. Now he's going to live for Christ every day. Luke 9:23 "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

Fahrenheit 9/11 got me into this song. It was really appropriately used in that, and I think that's where you get the sarcasm going. Bush playing golf while the world's falling down.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California Lyrics 17 years ago
People who love RHCP > people who hate RHCP

I love it when people pick on one of the most successful and popular alternative rock bands, saying they're crap. I can just picture them in their crappy emo garage set, bawling that they can't get anyone to listen to them.

What's more, there's a little thing called TASTE. Newsflash: NOT EVERYONE LIKES THE SAME THING. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean nobody should.

And if there's anything worse than seeing people on this site saying "OMG I luv dis song LOLZORS!!!111" it's "this song is crap, blah blah blah." Thanks for your input, we are so much more enlightened now that you've shared that piece of wisdom.

Yes, I'm aware this post has nothing to do with the meaning of Dani California, but I couldn't help saying somethign, having read some of the drivel in here...

I think it's about drugs. That's what every song on this site is about...

I'm addicted to this song, too much is not enough. And not least because I can sing it perfectly (and I don't mean The Edge's part).

Indigenous people and their "syrup" of choice.
"Hands to hunt and hold" - he's not cut out for post-modern capitalism. The verse beginning with "early day" talks about the demise of thousands of years of tradition after a bloody conquest.
The fight (for landrights, etc.) is too hard, too painful, so the only thing left to do is to drown it out with booze.

This may be a long-shot, but perhaps it's about the civil war in Ireland? This was an ongoing dispute, passed down from generation to generation, tearing families apart and feeding on ignorance and religion. "The law was her enemy" could refer to British rule.

Nice effort, but I'm pretty sure it's about Catholic priests. Bernard went to a Catholic school, and you'll notice some of his other songs have an anti-religious-establishment flavour (Grave Concern, for instance). "Parents blessed" - the priest gains their trust with feel-good blessings, then abuses the child when they leave it with him. "Shows no growth" - something seems to be wrong with the child but no one can figure it out.

Powderfinger – Hindley Street Lyrics 18 years ago
Come on guys, it's not that hard! He's in a hotel room, and he's an artist, so what does that suggest to you?
He's TOURING!
Todd Street Mall is in Alice Springs.
A gentle winter haze might be found in Canberra.
Hindley Street would definitely be refering to Adelaide.
And where else would you find a western ocean breeze but in Perth?

So, this is a song about touring around the country, in an album called, funnily enough, Internationalist.
"Twenty-five in thirty days makes this one feel like home" - he's been moving around so much that wherever he is feels like home.
"Why should I complain when everybody else is overworked and underpaid" - the creature comforts aren't the best, but it's pretty good compared to other jobs.
"Days keep rolling over" - every day on tour feels just like the last.
"Escape to the undercover" - he's becoming more and more famous, so he doesn't mind the shelter of his hotel room.
"Soon it will all be over, and we can start again" - when the tour's finished they'll start songwriting again.
