I think the after-sex cig story is fun. Even though I disagree with it, I really liked drew's interpretation because it seemed very well thought-out and perceptive. Kudos to drew.

I can't believe more people haven't commented on Liz's songs...this album ("Exile in Guyville") is great. Anyway, there's a reference to Greek mythology in this song, which many of you probably knew. The lines about the subject of this song springing from the head of Athena is a play on the story of Athena's birth. The goddess of war and wisdom, she sprung from her father Zeus's head. |

Maybe it's because I've grown up listening to dozens, but teen anthems are definitely rubbing me the wrong way. This song is very repetitive, and I don't like the lyrics much. It sounds like teenagers have some kind of vengance towards adults which they need to take out on them. Sure, we get angry at them sometimes, but I don't know about vengeful. It's a waste of a nice, loud song. The only others on this album, really, are Spawn Again and Satin Sheets, both of which rock. |

While I like their newer music much better, this is a great song, especially if you forget the fact that it's by Radiohead and just look at it as a good song.
I hold with the people who take it more as a personal song than a romantic one. I always related it to how I feel about my best friend, who I don't have any romantic feelings for or anything. She's just so beautiful and I feel like I'm just the background when I'm around her. Guys treat her better than they do me, girls want to be her. Once in a while I need a reality check--she may be pretty, but she's not a very good person. But for the times when I'm feeling like a creep, this song is a great one. |

Read somewhere (all the things I say seem to be something I read somewhere...no original thoughts :-/) that this song is about "preppy" girls who make fun of the people who are different, and then they start dressing like the people they used to make fun of and forget how they used to be. Hence, "You never know what you will get/You never know what you'll forget." |

A friend once told me that she put out her new album just to make some money to support her son. I don't know a single thing about her, I just know I love this album, so I can't confirm the veracity of that statement, but I'd say it's as good a reason to put out a shitty album as any. |

This song seems to me to be about a guy who is watching a girl he cares/cared about do something very stupid. She's going off with a guy who is shallow and will probably hurt her. My take on the line "I'm just the kind to bring you down" is that he's beating himself up about his outlook on her relationship. He's wondering if he's only seeing this guy she's dating as so bad because he cares about her. "Every time I hate you I think of you first" is saying that when he starts to think about her, he hates her because she's doing something he doesn't respect and yet he still can't stop thinking about her. |

I'm very surprised no one has mentioned this yet. I've only read this on the Internet, so I can't say it's a fact, but it sounds perfectly legit to me. Black Hole Sun, like Soundgarden, is the name of a sculpture in Seattle.
The fact that so many people here were very, very young when this song first came out (I was five) is a testament to how great Soundgarden's music is. |
