@[Nilmerf:21372] Because it WAS Duane's favorite. Do a little research. It was written in 1967, long before the Allman Brothers Band was founded. Duane even demo'd it on slide guitar in their early band, The 31st of February.

Led Zeppelin – Nobody's Fault but Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
Maybe because they uh... Did? As I clearly noted in this thread, this song is a cover of the Blind Willie Johnson song. I provided the original lyrics on page one. Blind Willie was a major influence of Led Zeppelin. As far as giving credit... Zeppelin has a reputation for not doing so and they have lost court cases accordingly.

Guess you didn't read the many posts here about the origi n of this remake of Blind Willie's song. It is not a "slave song" as Blind Willie Johnson was not a slave, but a Baptist street preacher who is considered the finest slide guitar player of all time.

Led Zeppelin – D'yer Mak'er Lyrics 20 years ago
"Okay... I'm not sure if this is right. (And yes, I did read the last 3 pages... all very confusing)"

Confusing? ...after I explained it to the nth degree?

Even big market radio dj's mispronounce this song as "die-er-maker" lol.

Here it is again for those who are in the lower realms of the Intelligence Quotient. As I explained, it is short for "did you make her" as in "did you make her go?"

The pub joke is:

1. Man tells his friend his wife has left him...that she ran off to the Carribean...
2. Friend asks, "Jamaica?" (for those who don't know, Jamaica is in the Carribean, lol).
3. Man though he said, "D'yer Mak'er?" as in "Did you make her?" (or did you run her off?)
4. So man replies, "no, she went on her own accord."

...hence the Jamaican beat and the "word play" on the title.

So is anyone still confused? Really? If so, just let me know and I'll try my best to explain it once again. lol.

Cat Stevens – The First Cut Is The Deepest Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't exactly see it that way...i.e. about not wanting to hurt the "other person." It is simply about how the writer is reluctant to get involved with a new love after being hurt deeply by his "first love."

It is also somewhat ambiguous -- there are two ways to look at, "The first cut is the deepest." 1. The "first cut" leaves him deeply hurt. 2. the next love(s) may not be as hurtful. So he may be on the one hand, reluctant to start a new love affair, but on the other hand realizing that if it goes bad that the hurt won't be as deep as the first.

Also...the line, "when it comes to being lucky she's cursed." could be ambiguios as well. i.e. is she "cursed" with being lucky? i.e. very attractive to other men? having to deal with many men who are seeking her affection? Thoughts?

Bob Dylan – Just Like a Woman Lyrics 20 years ago
No doubt...it is precisely about Edie Sedgwick. A "delicately beautiful" model and heiress whom Dylan believes was "broken" by her involvement with Andy Warhol and his "Factory" drug culture. He wrote several other songs about Edie. Dylan had a short relationship with her after her "Factory Girl" days. Barbituate poisoning eventually took her life at the age of 28. Very sad.

submissions
Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about Edie Sedgewick. A very "delicately beautiful," but troubled heiress whom Dylan was involved with for a short time...after her "stint" as Andy Warhol's main "Factory Girl." She appeared in Warhol's (who was openly gay) underground films. Dylan also wrote "Like A Rolling Stone" about her. She became addicted to barbituates and died at the age of 28 from barbituate poisoning. Dylan blamed her drug addiction on Warhol.

submissions
Bob Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone Lyrics 20 years ago
Definately about Edie Sedgwick -- a beautiful heiress who turned to drugs after getting involved with Warhol and his "scene" (the Factory) that consisted of "bohemians." Later becoming involved with Dylan, then Dylans sidekick, Bob Neuwirth and becoming hooked on heroin and barbituates...eventually dying of an overdose of barbituates at the age of 28.

I don't agree that Dylan is "gloating" -- but only telling the "tough love" facts. Something that her "friends" who were supplying the drugs would never do.

Led Zeppelin – In My Time of Dying Lyrics 20 years ago
"In all respect" it is amazing how nutty the posts are on forums such as this. Zeppelin's early work was largely covers of blues artists, including Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie was a major influence on Jimmy Page's guitar work. This song and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" are tributes to Blind Willie's slide guitar work, which was beyond anything that has ever been done since. It is equally amazing how people get some of their crazy ideas about songs...i.e. "...an indictment of Christianity." Hello? The lyrics were lifted directly from Blind Willie's work. In addition to being arguably the finest slide guitar player that ever lived, Blind Willie Johnson was a Christian Evangelist. The more you learn about music, the more you will appreciate this fact.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 20 years ago
"When all are one and one is all."

Jesus' last prayer in the garden of Gethsemane (John 17) was that all would be one, just as He and God are one.

"11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled."

...

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama Lyrics 21 years ago
Neil Young was as popular in the 70's as anyone. I know, I graduated high school in '73 in metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I used to rock out to Neil Young's "Southern Man" right along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk, Aerosmith, Zeppeling and all the other classic bands of the seventies. Southern Man was a great song!

Skynyrd simply gave an answer in the spirit of fun. Us southerners don't like others tellin' us what to do. It is part of our heritage. The line refering to Neil Young is just sayin' that we don't need anyone tellin' us what to do and that we can handle our own problems ourselves and that the north has its problems too (i.e. Watergate). It is NOT a racist song.

Neil Young loved Lynyrd Skynyrd and vice versa. Young performed this song at a memorial to the three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in the plane crash (1977).

Led Zeppelin – The Rain Song Lyrics 21 years ago
He has said, "I don't worship the devil."
But..........he released the IV'th album on Aleistar Crowley's birthday and printed his quotes on the vinyl disk. Bought and recorded albums in Crowley's house.

In the song, "Most High" they (Plant/Page) refer to the "seed of David's paper crown" -- indicating that Jesus is "all bark and no bite?" and the "mock" God in the lyrics.

And regarding Robert Plant....in the song, "In my time of dying" asking (on the DVD) Gabriel, "Have you ever had your horn blown?" An obvious sexual reference....again mocking God and Heaven.

The book, "Hammer of the Gods" indicates that Page despised the Christian faith.

Led Zeppelin was indeed a "hard drug" band (I was there through it all). They have influenced countless people and continue to do so. The question remains, "Is their influence positive or negative?"

Writing is very hard work, especially song writing. It is not something that is done successfully while "on drugs" yet certain pinheads want to constantly attribute rock tunes to drugs and sex. While certain songs certainly are "about" drugs, I seriously doubt that successful songs were written while "on" drugs, especially hard drugs.

Ledzepluver read Ramthar's post. Floods were in 1913. This song was based on a 1929 recording by blues artist Memphis Minnie. Zep "covered" it in 1975 on Led Zeppelin 4. You people who want to make it out to be a sexual innuendo have had your brains frying on drugs much too long. Ever considered checking in to a treatment center? I guess its too late.

I hate to "bust your bubble" Joseph, but it could easily have been JPJ. I wouldn't use the term "respectable" for any of the Zeppelin band members. I was aware of this story but I always thought it was Bonham. (A google search would seem to suggest otherwise.) It is interesting how the perception of Zeppelin has changed over the years while their music becomes as popular as ever (possibly more so). These guys were "party animals" in the truest sense and they consumed large quantities of drugs. They were known as a "drug band" and that is probably why they never received a Grammy. They were not really well received in the "status quo" media of the time but could hardly be ignored due to their incredible popularity...their shows and albums outsold everyone, including the Beatles. My memories are that pretty much everyone I knew (my age) smoked marijuana and most did harder drugs. I remember going to a Led Zeppelin concert with my hippie friends. They (Not me of course) would roll a huge joint (about eight inches long and one inch thick) and one of the girls would "smuggle" it into the "Omni" here in Atlanta. "They" would light it up and pass it on, never to be seen again. No worry, a few minutes later another one would be passed through. Trust me, at the time (1977) it was ALL about drugs and sex. It wasn't as if all the members EXCEPT JPJ were involved...that is a ludicrous idea. Led Zeppelin CELEBRATED the drug culture of the '70's.

As a Christian, I am conflicted about this band. Were they "devil worshipers?" Page said, "I don't worship the devil." But they released their fourth album on the birthday of Aleister Crowley in 1971 and Page bought his house, etc., etc.

The drugs eventually took their toll on Led Zeppelin just like all the other '70's rock groups. JPJ is not excluded by any means. Somehow though he has gotten a reputation of being the one who "escaped." But, no doubt, he was definitely in the thick of it during the Zeppelin years.

I'm confused. Why is it that so many want to deny the references the LOTR? And get so angry about it? These references are well known and well documented. No, it is not "about" the LOTR, but it has specific references to the Hobbit (for example):
"There's a feeling I get when I look to the west..."
"in my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees"
"and the voices of those who stand laughing"
Read "The Hobbit" and the references will be quite clear.

Also, how can a song that is the most popular rock tune of all time be overrated? Nonsense.
