Like Rain From Heaven, this has some similarities to several songs from Floodland, which was released about a year later: Dominion/Mother Russia (sand/dust/desert), This Corrosion ("gimme", giving away), Flood I & II (water/drowning). |

"white line" is undoubtably a drug reference.
"fade across the line" suggests a car slowly crossing to the wrong side of the road due to steering (or driver) malfunction.
"black and gold" could refer to black gold, oil. |

Should the line "..people stoop back, once stood tall" read "stoop that" instead? I know most sources quote the lyrics that way, but this is an unreleased song, so I assume the lyrics were never officially published in written form. |

"Colours wrapped around" is perhaps a reference to military uniform. Fits with "marching men." Given the context of the album, is this song about WWII? |

Agreed. It's a parody of lyrics by Hussey his imitators, impressive sounding words and cliche fragments strung together with little thought as to meaning.
Lots of references to hands, royalty and religion here. |

| The Sisters of Mercy – Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones cover) Lyrics

The lyrics are slightly different to the original. The Stones sang "war, children/it's just a shot away", "rape, murder/it's just a shot away" and "love, sister/it's just a kiss away".
This is one of several Sisters songs that juxtapose themes of violence and love. See also Ribbons, Temple of Love, Under the Gun, and probably others. |

"Heat-seeking, out of the sun/set the controls.." is a reference to the Pink Floyd song Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.
Given the space theme, "explosive bolts" might refer to the pod bay doors scene in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Oddysey.
"the chosen" recalls "one of the chosen/one of the few" in Driven Like the Snow. |

25,000 pounds sterling is allegedly the sum of money missed out on by former Sisters member Wayne Hussey, after he split from the group in 1985. Hussey formed a band under the name The Sisterhood; Eldritch and co beat them to the name (and the cash) by releasing the album Gift as The Sisterhood. Jihad is the opening track. In German, "gift" means "poison". |

"She looked goon in ribbons" purportedly means *cut* to ribbons. If so, "tie a red red red red ribbon" suggests a rather violent scene.
I've heard it said that "lying on my back" refers to an experience at a drug or alcohol clinic, where the stars painted on the ceiling "look all too near".
"lovers queued up in the hallway" and "scratching at the door" recall references in Some Kind of Stranger (a much earlier, and perhaps less bitter song) to "footsteps in the hall outside". Hallways are mentioned also in Flood I & II ("and her hallway.. moves..") - take the Freudian interpretation if you like. |
