Danny Wilson – Mary's Prayer Lyrics | 20 years ago |
All about regret...about realizing that you once were special to someone but carelessly threw that away. That person could make you feel on top of the world when you belonged to them, but those precious days are gone forever and you would give anything to get them back. |
Moby – My Weakness Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I learned about Moby from that X-Files episode--as soon as it was over, I was racing to figure out who did this song. This is a piece of music that I can put on "repeat" and listen to, literally, for an hour without getting sick of it. The music builds and ebbs like a tide. I've seen another interpretation of the lyrics (if you can call them that) but I believe they are singing in an African language, not English, and therefore are unintelligible. |
Alanis Morissette – Uninvited Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The other interpretations are interesting, but basically this was for "City of Angels" and speaks about the angel's desire for the woman he cannot physically touch...because he is 'not invited' to partake in earthly sensations. The part: I don't think you unworthy I need a moment to deliberate... Is when she realizes that the angel intends to sacrifice his eternal life in order to be with her. Should she encourage him to do this? What a terrible responsibility. I need a moment to deliberate... |

Aimee Mann – Wise Up Lyrics | 20 years ago |
bertrande said it so well--thank you from a fellow "Magnolia" fan. I see this song as the plea to learn from your mistakes...so easily said, but not so easily done. |
Aimee Mann – Save Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Great song. Great words. Aimee also does the cutest little physical stretch upward each time she hits the higher "save me"s, as though the stretch will help her hit the notes. (She is awesome in concert!) |
Aimee Mann – Red Vines Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Red Vines are the red licorice twists that are known as "Twizzlers" in some parts of America. |
Tom Waits – Burma-Shave Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The images evoked by these lyrics are so vivid: the road was like a ribbon and the moon was like a bone... her hair spilled out like rootbeer... -and- when they pulled her from the wreck you know she still had on her shades... Wonderful. A perfect jewel of storytelling. |
Tom Waits – Way Down in the Hole Lyrics | 20 years ago |
If you watch the HBO series, "The Wire," then you already know that this song is the show's theme. For season one, they used an excellent cover version by the Blind Boys of Alabama. For season two, they changed it up and used the original version by Tom. Season three starts this fall, and I can't wait to see what they'll do with it next! |
Billy Joel – All For Leyna Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Once upon a time, to someone, I WAS Leyna. Didn't intend to ruin my loved one's life, and yet I did. He stopped going to his college classes and blew his scholarship just to follow me around. I couldn't go anywhere without seeing him lurking around my car, my apartment, my workplace. My neighbors actually called the cops on him because they thought he was a peeping tom. Although I loved him, he began to frighten me, and the harder he tried to cling to me, the more desperate I became to get away. It is possible to be stalked by somebody while you are in a relationship with them... |
A-Ha – Hunting High And Low Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Gives me shivers. I can't listen to this without being painfully reminded of a love I let slip away, and the subsequent years I spent devastated by regret. |
The Smiths – I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Lyrics | 20 years ago |
A gay friend of mine had impulsively declared his love and longing for someone who he thought might be receptive, but he was wrong. That person barely spoke to him again, and he ended up completely humiliated about it. He always told me that this song described his thoughts so perfectly... |

The Smiths – Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Short, bitter, poignant, like Morrissey has cut through all the BS poetry and is just plainly, heartbreakingly speaking his mind...like a prayer that you mouth to yourself more than to God: "For once in my life, let me get what I want. Lord knows, it would be the first time." |

U2 – All I Want Is You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
ballzofsno described this so perfectly, that there is not much to add. I'd just like to say that if I had to pick ONE song and only one, and that song would become the only piece of music that I could listen to for the rest of my life...this would be it. |
Tom Waits – Martha Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Possibly the saddest song ever written. Difficult to even hear it without crying... Takes me back to the guy I fell for because (back then) he also loved Tom Waits. We listened to this song a lot, and I always suspected that we would somehow NOT end up together, and that someday I would hear "Martha" and think of calling him. I was right. |
Tori Amos – Silent All These Years Lyrics | 20 years ago |
No one has mentioned this part yet: Your MOTHER shows up in a nasty dress It's your turn now to stand where I stand Everybody lookin' at you here take hold of my hand I think this is speaking about the way that her own abused and damaged soul still can't resist but to reach out a hand to her abuser...when he is the one to feel ridiculed and small. Very insightful and compassionate. |

Tom Waits – Invitation to the Blues Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song opens the extraordinary movie, "Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession." Perfect song for the intro to a complex and disturbing film. Oh, and it proves that Tom Waits will always be one of--if not the--best storytellers in music history. |
Tom Waits – Hope I Don't Fall in Love with You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
When I was a student and VERY broke, I would regularly go to this cafe where they had "sing for your supper" night. You had to entertain the people in the restaurant for at least 20 minutes, and if you weren't booed off the stage they gave you a free meal. Nearly every time I went there, I performed this song with my acoustic guitar. 20 years later, I still think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever...and I guess I always will. |
