Little Shop of Horrors – Suddenly, Seymour Lyrics 12 years ago
2012 and still only 4 comments on here...not good! I wish Mzel95 was still on this site, because I feel the same way as she does, and I'm almost 39. I STILL can't hear the song without tearing up like a baby, especially as it crescendos toward the end. The part of the song that hits me hardest, though, is when Audrey sings:

Please understand that it's still
Strange and frightnin'
For losers like I've been
It's so hard to say

That hits home for me, because I've spent so much of my life thinking I was "less than," instead of believing in myself and what I'm capable of. Sometimes I still feel that way. LSOH is one of my faves, always and forever, and this song is the favorite of my favorite! Long live musical theater.

Garbage – #1 Crush Lyrics 12 years ago
This song came out..how many years ago???...and I'm JUST now finding the original version on Grooveshark. If you listen to both versions, you'll find the version that made it to the Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack is the most romantic of love songs in comparison. On the original, the beat is harsher, the guitars darker...it's a whole other vibe! If the R&J version says "I love you so much I'd do ANYTHING, go anywhere to keep your love," the original version says "I love you so much that I've been hiding in your bushes for 3 weeks now, when you leave the house I either follow you around and know your schedule better than you do--or I just break in and sniff all your panties, the cat you thought ran away is actually stuffed and sitting on my dining room table, and any man not an immediate relative is going to come up missing. And if you don't love me soon, you might just come up missing, too."

At least, that what the differences seemed like to me lol.

Sugarland – Stay Lyrics 12 years ago
I heard about this song from my younger cousin, who said she had a "cute" song she wanted me to hear. She played the video for me On Demand, and I broke down in tears, it was that amazing. Especially when she started crying; I just completely lost it.

I don't normally go for country music, and I detest songs about cheating, but this song just blows me away. Simple, straightforward, and no explanation needed. Listen to it back-to-back with Faith Hill's Cry and I swear you'll be sobbing for a good half hour, at least!(They just happen to be on my playlist in that order. Ugh.)

cruzntopless, while I don't condone cheating(been cheated on WAAAY too many times to make that leap), there ARE exceptions to every rule. Now, if the woman went into the relationship KNOWING "her" man was married, then, the ho got what she deserved. However, what if, like so many situations, she didn't know he was married until it was WAY too late to back out of? Like they'd been together a couple of years with him successfully hiding his marital status up to that point? Or if he told his lover that he was married, but separated or in the middle of a divorce, then strung them both along until she realized the truth of the situation? And while you and I might have left as soon as we realized something like this was going on, a woman in love wants to believe the best in her man. And it's so much easier for the "other woman" to believe a man's lies: He's not in love with his wife, but staying for the sake of the kids, or because she's sick(physically or mentally), or because she'd ruin him financially or the millions of other lies that can fall from a man's lips so very easily. As long as one or both women involved don't start "nagging," the only one truly happy in that situation is HIM.

Anyway, awesome song, phenomenal video, excellent artists!

Britney Spears – 3 Lyrics 13 years ago
Ok. A few thoughts.

First off, this song is dirty mostly because we MAKE it so. Yes, the song is about threesomes, that's no doubt. But we see the lyrics and AUTOMATCIALLY assume it's about sex. It very well could be. But it could also be about grabbing two of your friends and hitting the dance floor("twister on the floor" and "Or four....On the floor!"). It could also be about grabbing said friends and hitting the karaoke bar. Who knows?

As for Britney being a bad role model, that's not her job. It's not what she's being paid for. Yes, little girls(and boys)hear her music, like what they hear, and want to emulate her. But it's OUR jobs, as parents, to be our children's role models. Shield them from what we can, then explain what slips through in an age-appropriate manner. Give them a healthy self-esteem and sense of self-worth, so that they know right from wrong, so that they know that they don't have to follow every bad trend in order to be "cool", or to fit in with their peers. Talk with them, be a part of their lives, make sure you know what's going on with them and the people they hang with. That way, when we release them out into the world, they'll be able to make up their own minds on the matter, then follow the path that's right for them. Kids with the right parenting, and some common sense, will see this as just a catchy dance song(even if they DO know what it's about)without actually wanting to do what the song tells them to, at least while they're still that young.

The "celebrities" our children look up to can't have power unless WE give it to them. We "adults" all want to have our entertainment, our sex and violence and scandal, and feel it's our "right" to have said entertainment and free press and all that because we're "adults". But the first time our kids pick up on that stuff and try to emulate it, we want to cry foul. Britney Spears and her ilk aren't the reason the world's going straight to Hell. The world going into the dumps because "adults" have forgotten how to balance their "rights" as adults with their RESPONSIBILITIES to their children. And it's only going to get worse until we pick up the pieces and fix it.

Enigma – Gravity Of Love Lyrics 14 years ago
rochey, I think your interpretation is amazing! I just discovered this song 3 days ago(can you believe it?)while doing a mass download of Enigma songs I'd lost...came across this one and figured why not? I've been in love with it ever since!

I'd been trying to figure out exactly what the song meant to me, so I decided to come here to see how others had weighed in, and to get the lyrics. Yours was the one that hit closest to home for me, even though it wasn't my initial opinion of the song. It was more romantic to me, especially now, since, for health reasons, I'm currently several states away from my Husband, who's the love of my life, and whom I miss more than mere words can express. But now that I've got your point of view in my head, the song's even more of a favorite for me. I played "Believe" by Lenny Kravitz for my mother the night before she passed away, as it was her favorite song, and since then, it's been my go-to song for hope and redemption. This is now right up there with it, and I have YOU to thank for that.

*tight hugs*Your mother would be very, very, VERY proud of you. I know she's looking down on you, and smiling now. Take care.

Weezer – Buddy Holly Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think I can add anything interpretation-wise that hasn't already been said, but I DO think the song is genius! Especially the beginning...no musical lead-in, just the heavy-hitting rock guitar, the singer's voice all do-wop folksie white-bread, and the slang lines "Why all these homies dissin' my girl?/Why do they gotta front?" lol..hilarious, and a freakin' masterpiece!

Rihanna – Disturbia Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually, I agree with the person who said it was the author's personal take on lust/love. I'm thinking it's a bit more on the lust side, though. From the title of the album, Good Girl Gone Bad, I'm just thinking that she's exploring the truly *adult* side of adult, so to speak. Perhaps her first intimate encounter? Bah, I can't explain myself any more clearly, there's too many kids who like this song who may come here to post. But I'm sure there's *someone* out there who knows what I'm trying to say and agrees with me, yes?

Depeche Mode – The Things You Said Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with you all. The song is all the more intense for it's quiet. It's not all blaring music and shouting vocals, but more a quiet hurt that someone he loved so much could use his vulnerabilities against him to make him out to be a fool. The vocals bring tears to my eyes each time I listen. I'm listening to this song now and my son's bored witless because I've got it on repeat play and he wants to listen to Iron Man. lol

Depeche Mode – One Caress Lyrics 15 years ago
I tend to agree with mitten kitten out of all the replies here, with a touch of MapMistress thrown in. However, I think it's also about a man who honestly thinks he's in love with this woman, but he's also jaded with excess, basically bored with life. He disrespects himself with those excesses(women, alcohol, drugs, whatever), then "comes home" to his lady for that absolution from all he's done wrong, because he thinks her love for him is the only thing that makes him feel clean and whole again, even as he knows it'll only be a matter of time before he debases himself again.

On a side note here, I've been scrolling through the songs to add lyrics to my iPod catalog, and I've noticed something interesting here. There seems to be 4 solid camps at work in the interpretation of DM's songs: Spiritual/Religious, Romantic/Love, BDSM/Sex, and Drug/Alcohol. And, out of those 4 groups, only the Romantic/Love group seems to be the most flexible in its thinking--but only to a tiny margin. The Drug/Alcohol group sees addiction in *every* song in DM's entire catalog of songs. Same with the BDSM/Sex group(though I *can* understand how both groups can come to those conclusions). Those in the Religion/Spiritual group, while I can see how on many of the songs a connection to God or a higher Being can be established, but there've been a few songs on here where, if the lyrics are correct, convey areas of my bedroom I do NOT want my God peeking into.*L*

I'm just happy DM songs don't inspire the comment wars most other group's songs do. Even those arguing the religious vs. the sexual aspects are all playing nicely, which is a refreshing change of pace.

Lenny Kravitz – Believe Lyrics 16 years ago
I've loved this song from the moment it came out. But this last year it became even more meaningful to me. It was my mother's favorite song and we listened to it together all the time. It jazzed me to see her grooving along to the guitar solo at the end of the song. She passed away late 2006 and this is the last song we played for her before she passed. So now an already meaningful song has been elevated even higher in my heart. R.I.P, Mommy.

This is one of the most profound, beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I want it played at my funeral when God calls me home.

Sarah McLachlan – Fallen Lyrics 16 years ago
Actually, a second look at the lyrics, coupled with the video, makes me rather think that she's had more than one affair.

"We all begin with good intent
Love was raw and young
We believed that we could change ourselves
THe past could be undone
But we carry on our backs the burden
Time always reveals
The lonely light of morning
The wound that would not heal
It's the bitter taste of losing everything
That I have held so dear..."

She went into the marriage trying to make herself believe she loved her Husband but couldn't pull it off. He either found out or she felt guilty and confessed. He forgave her and tried to make the marriage work, but she found once again she couldn't go through with it. Hence the second affair. Or perhaps she really did love her Husband, but only on an emotional level. He couldn't or wouldn't please her sexually, so, while she had love for him mentally and emotionally, she still had one or more sexual affairs to provide what she wasn't getting at home. He, of course, finds out and leads to the obvious conclusion.

Sarah McLachlan – Fallen Lyrics 16 years ago
I can see the point of those who think this song's about failing themselves and the people around them, and also the drug/alcohol addiction theories. But the first time I heard the song, I also saw the video, and what I took from it is that she's in an unhappy marriage--perhaps a token marriage, one of convenience, or a "perfect" man that family & friends kept pushing on her--that she's trying to make work. Until she meets another man who offers to give her all she thinks she needs. They have a very explicit, passionate, and exciting affair, the Husband finds out, and he's not quiet about his discovery. Her Husband leaves her, the lover leaves her, and her family and "perfect" social circle of "friends" turn away from her because she's disgraced herself and 'them'. And now she's left alone with her regrets, telling everyone she knows she screwed up, she doesn't need anyone pointing out the obvious to her.

Anyway, that's my take on the song.

Howard Jones – Everlasting Love Lyrics 16 years ago
That's the point. The people in the song weren't looking for that. They didn't want meaningless sexual gratifications, they wanted something that would stand the test of time. I adore this song! In this day & age, sexual and emotional attitudes, both in real life, and in our entertainment, has gotten out of hand. Barely legal girls prancing around half naked, guys only caring about what's on a woman's chest and backside, people throwing the word "love" around yet bailing from relationships the second something goes wrong or something better comes along. It's disgusting.

So, this song's a breath of fresh air, then and now. It's about love, true love the way it's supposed to be. More "artists" should put out music like this!

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever put out. I've had it in my music collection for years now, yet it still brings shivers down my spine and tears to my eyes when I hear it. It evokes all the things going on in my life at the time and how love for and from my family and friends helps me to get through all the bull in life. It also shows that the world is still a good place and that love can and DOES make a difference in the world. Powerful, powerful stuff.

Billy Idol – Adam In Chains Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not too suprised nobody commented on this one, as the Cyberpunk CD sucked as a whole. This was the only song I liked, the others clearly demonstrate that the once Great Billy Idol had clearly lost his mind during the making of the CD.

I'm not too sure what the hell the song's about, especially on how the spoken and the sung parts fit together, but I love the song anyway, there's something mellow yet sexy about it at the same time. It has this mysterious edge to it that I don't understand and can't explain, but I love anyway. Great song to add to your MP3 collection.

bestkeptsecret, after reading your post and going back to look at the lyrics again, that makes SO much sense! Especially the "they have forgotten what by day they lack" part. However you slice it though, it'll always be a beautiful song.

On another, sadder note: On the album, The Body Accoustic, she has another version of this song. The good news? It's almost as beautiful as the original, in some spots even better since her voice has matured over the years. This version has a bit of a folksy, Celtic combination, with very effective use of piano and violin. Where she screwed up? Shaggy is on the song. Yes, "Mr. Boombastic", what-the-hell-is-he-saying Shaggy. Now, I like his music, but he just has no place on this song.

Love the song, the lyrics either paint him as a musical genius or a blathering idiot. I think he wants to keep us guessing, which is genius in itself. Never heard of DP before this song, so not going to comment on that.

His music's awesome, but my personal opinion--which is just MY opinion & I'll probably get flamed for--is that West is trying a bit too hard to be Diddy Jr. as far as style and such. But that's just my opinion.

Michael Jackson – Thriller Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe he's innocent; as one poster said above, he seems too childlike himself to be guilty of such a thing. Plus, after TWO trials, he's innocent both times? C'mon, had he done anything wrong they'd have gotten SOMETHING on him by now!! I'm glad he's innocent, because he's my favorite performer and if he were guilty I'd have to throw out all his music. Someone mentioned that if he DID molest kids that's not all he thinks about, so not to let it affect if or not you listen to his music. The poster also mentioned that gay men don't constantly think about doing men. True that, but the difference is that there's nothing wrong with two consenting ADULTS doing what they want to do to themselves and each other. It's a whole different ballgame when you're talking about an adult(who should know better)and a minor, especially a young child. However, Michael's innocent, so I'll step off my soapbox*S*

The song's amazing, always was, always will be. I remember when the album first came out, even my hard rock/heavy metal friends had the album. Hell, even Alice Cooper said on a VH-1 special awhile back that the Thriller album made it cool for people who normally wouldn't be caught dead listening to MJ to take a listen and like. Now how awesome is that?

Michael Jackson – They Don't Care About Us Lyrics 17 years ago
He was trying to use the terms in a sympathetic manner, to show that many were trying to terminate him in spirit the way Hitler, etc., tried to exterminate Jewish people. However, it backfired on him, as many Jewish people were understandably upset and called for the lyrics to be changed. Jackson apologized, but a lyrical retraction was still called for, so he complied on the cd and at least one of the two versions of the video. I can't remember if he changed the lyrics in the jail house version of the vid. I'll have to check.

love9998 hit the nail on the head, and I agree wholeheartedly, with cmckinley, too. This song is one of his most amazing songs, and will always be my all-time MJ favorite. And that's saying a LOT, because I've got so many favorites by him. I've never been to New York, but the imagry in these lyrics make me feel as if I'd been there before, and every time I want to go back, all I have to do is fire up the tape deck or iPod. This is classic stuff, and when this came out I was still young enough to believe that anything was possible, this song was pure innocence for me, and the King of Pop couldn't be toppled from his throne. I miss those days.

Michael Jackson – Remember the Time Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm like you guys. When this first came out I didn't realize how sad the song really was, the music's so dancable and the video's so funky/groovy, it's hard not to get caught up dancing. I always thought it was a guy reminding his current love about the first time they met and the early days of their relationship, it's only just now, reading the lyrics, that I see he's talking of a former love, telling her he'll always remember the good times and asking if she does the same. Makes me remember my first love now. Damn. :-)

On a somewhat humorous side note: anyone else notice in the video when MJ's kissing Iman, she seems to be trying to get away from him, like he can't kiss or something? Not sure why, but that part always cracks me up!

Michael Jackson – Dirty Diana Lyrics 17 years ago
While this is one of my favorite MJ songs, I do have to admit the timing of both song and video struck me as highly hilarious. Had he come out with DD during his Off The Wall or even Thriller time frame, he'd have had every hot-blooded female alive between the ages of 13-80 buying it. But, c'mon folks, at the time Bad was released, his face was already starting to slide, and, in the words of the great Kat Williams, "When was the last time he was in a relationship YOU believed? Don't worry, I'll wait!" I'd have had an easier time believing him singing this song when he was still touring with his brothers!

And, even funnier, the guitar solo! When he ripped off his shirt I almost died laughing. I'll always love Michael, but c'mon, when he ripped away his T-shirt the poor thing looked like a Cornish game hen! It helps to have a chest if you're going to attempt to show it off like that.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I'm really NOT MJ bashing. He'll always be the greatest in my book. Just I thought this was rather funny, and I get a chuckle out of it every time I watch the vid.

Give the song a break, guys, at least it's a change from Corporate's usual standard of giving 5-year-olds sex-laden lyrics to sing, or "love" songs about experiences they're supposed to be years away from going through yet. Yes, this song can get annoying after awhile, but it's bubbly, cute, and totally appropriate for her age. I'm 34 and haven't worn gloss in quite a few years, but I still love the song. Never heard the Orbinson version unfortunately, though I'm a fan. I LOVE Lauper's version, it's sexy and spunky and always puts me in a funky, wonderful mood. Dion's version? Up to that point, I loved her even though she had a couple of misses musically. After hearing her butchering of this song, however, I'm of the opinion that she should be hamstrung. Then suspended by said hamstrings and beaten like a pinata until she agrees to personally collect and burn every copy of that fiasco that's out there, including the master copy & any MP3's, and the commercial that featured that atrocity. Proof that imitation's not always the sincerest form of flattery.

I agree with everyone, especially xxandy. The keyboard loop gives the song an ethreal, almost haunting quality that always brings to mind the first night with someone new, when the sky's the limit, the night's so full of promise, and anything's possible. The song just wouldn't work without it. Lauper's vocals add to it, her almost childlike voice blending with the sensual quality of the music to take the whole to a wonderful new level. Too bad nobody commented on this hidden gem. I first heard this song many years after high school, yet when I heard it, the first thing I thought of was my first "true" love, and how I had to leave him behind when I graduated. His father didn't approve of us being together, my parents objected because his parents objected, and, since I was two years older than him, once I left high school there was no viable way we could be together. But I'll always remember our last time together, and the fun(and not so fun)times we had together, and this song always makes me spare a thought to him, all these years later. One of Lauper's best songs, especially since it's not being sung in the usual squeaky-high register we've come to know and love from her over the years.

Alice Cooper – Ballad Of Dwight Fry Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song and I can't come up with any better takes on the song than the ones you've all posted. I do have a question though.

There was an update AC did of his song and I'm going nuts trying to find it! I rediscovered Alice Cooper in '89 when I first heard "Poison". My senior year('91), when "Hey Stoopid" came out, that track and "House of Fire" really made me want the "Trash" CD. My parents, in their parently knowledge of such things, got me the cassette single of "Hey Stoopid" instead of the entire CD. And on the B-side was the Fry remake. Not really a remake so much as an update of the song. I thought it was awesome! The original was more of a melancholy sort of disturbing, while this newer version had more electric guitars and Cooper's vocals were sharper, crisper, giving the song more of a psychotic rage sort of edge. I lost the cassette when I moved away from home, and I've been searching for this version since. I've looked extensively for it, and it's not listed on any of the discologies I've looked up. HELP!!

If anyone has it or knows where I can get it, please reach me. My msn is lanakael2@hotmail.com. Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Bee Gees – Grease Lyrics 17 years ago
Frankie Valli sang the song, but it was written by the great Brothers Gibb, as were most, I believe, of the songs on the soundtrack.

I'm surprised that most of the comments on the song point toward not knowing what the lyrics meant or that the song had almost nothing to do with the movie. The song says what most of the movie does--that two teens from vastly different backgrounds are in love despite(or perhaps because of)those differences. And those around them can't understand the attraction. Good girls should only date good guys, and only bad girls should attract the bad guys. Today that can be used to describe any "alternative" relationship: status, race, age, whatever. The song is saying that we're in love no matter what our peers or society have to say about the matter, and we should be free to be who we are, not what they say we should be. A very powerful message, powerful lyrics, all set to one hell of a dance-worthy beat. Simply amazing.

Thrice – Nothing Compares to You (Sinead O'Connor cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Those saying it's a Prince song are correct: He did the orginal version, which is also awesome. O'Connor was given permission to remake her wonderful version of the song, which she sang in memory of her mother. The second version of the video(the one they showed on the music stations)was done in one take, and the tears she shed were real.

Thomas Dolby – She Blinded Me With Science Lyrics 17 years ago
Thank heavens for VH-1..some of you people were scaring me! The song IS about a shy scientist falling for his younger, beautiful and intelligent lab assistant. It was explained on both VH-1's 100 Greatest songs of the '80's, and also VH-1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders. I think both song and video are awesome, still one of my faves after all this time!

Jermaine Stewart – We Dont Have To Take Our Clothes Off Lyrics 17 years ago
Incorrect lyrics: But I'm not a piece of meat, still you like my brain. Should be: Girl, I'm not a piece of meat, stimulate my brain.

And: If the conversation's good
Vibrations through & through //Should be: Give me conversations, good vibrations through and through.

And, even though this song's one of my favorites, I've got a few beefs*lol*First off, tell me what single man actually belives that? If he really means what he's saying in this song, either he's gay as hell or she's ugly as s*it. Most single men I know, the date's all about the score! And usually, her performance will indicate whether or not they have conversation beforehand next time. If there even IS a next time.

And "drink some cherry wine"? Oh, c'mon!*L*Again, in my experience, any single man who willingly drinks cherry wine, of all things, is either trying to score, because he knows "chicks dig stuff like that"...or he's dating you to get to your brother. I'm just sayin'.

And don't bash, I'm not hatin' on anybody. No, I'm not against gay people(considering I've got gay friends and family members, they'd be shocked if I was), I don't hate men(though my Husband might disagree lol), and I truly DO love this song. It's one of my faves, & I can never sit still when I hear it. This song always puts me in a good mood, no matter what's going on around me. And it WOULD be nice if more men were like this. I know they're out there, it's just hard to find 'em. I just thought I'd take a silly poke at it, is all. Still & always a great song!

REO Speedwagon – In My Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
I was just a kid when this song came out, so it didn't really have any special meaning for me, other than that I just liked it. But when I hit my teen years, of course, like many other teens, I went through my series of "true loves"...you know, where you practically breathe in their very essence...and they don't even know you exist, even if they've been sitting in front of you in home room or copying your homework or test papers for years. I'd worn out several cassette tapes over the years listening to this song while I mooned over the "true love" of the moment, and to this day it still holds many bitterswet memories of youth for me. It's one of those classics that just seem to bring back a more innocent time, when love really did conquer all and everything was possible. As long as there's love, unrequited or otherwise--songs like this will have a place in the world.

Christina Aguilera – Hurt Lyrics 17 years ago
I just finished watching the video on Fuse and I'm still in tears. I just lost my mother this past October, a week after her 53rd birthday, and it still hurts. She and I didn't talk for the better part of a decade and even though we reconciled, our relationship, for the most part, was pretty antagonistic up until most of this past year. Even then, when she was at her sickest, I preferred to deal with her illness as little as possible. I'll never forgive myself for that, especially now that I'm dealing with the exact same health problems she is, and now that I'm a mother myself.

Even though she didn't write the song and her parents are still alive, I'm sure she's lost at least one person close to her, so I'm sure she feels the song just as strongly as any of the rest of us. The video was so compelling! It was especially powerful at the end, where she's laying on the ground while the rest of the circus folk go on about their business around her like she's not even there. That's so clearly saying that in the grand scheme of things, the world doesn't really give a damn about you and your pain, so while you can, take care of your own, because no one else will do it for you. I only wish I'd learned that lesson earlier.

Musically, I think this is her best song yet. Christina's always had a powerful, compelling voice, and it only gets better as it, and she, matures. Truly a diva of our generation.
