It's about the Catholic army that destroyed the Cathars, a sect that broke away from Catholicism. They fled to the top of a hill called Montségur, in France, where they were beseiged until they surrendered. They were all burned alive (about 250 men, women, and children) on a giant pyre. One of Maiden's heaviest numbers. |

What can you say about a song like this? One of the greatest heavy metal tunes of all time. If I ever pick up a bass guitar, this song and Steve Harris will be the reason why. This is some of Harris' greatest work, just awesome all the way around. I'm going to go listen to it now. UP THE IRONS! |

It's a definite reference to Charlotte, as the line also mentions the Beast (Satan). The song compares the woman to Charlotte the Harlot, who was a well-known prostitute. |

Bruce said on "Rock in Rio" that it was a dedication song to the fans of heavy metal, so I took it to mean that we metalheads are brothers. And it's true. Dedications like that I always take personally, because no one does that anymore (except for the metal bands). |
