I think it might be "you go trying to start a protocol to hem us in" "when the dog slides underneath the train, there's no crying; no use in searching for the mutt's remains" and then later it's like ladybug87 said

Pretty Girls Make Graves – Chemical, Chemical Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's talking about society's biased view towards people who march to the beat of a different drummer... often people who are different bear a social stigma, and are alienated for thier inability to conform to the normal crowd. Society often sees someone who is different as a risk or an inconvenience, and say things like "why can't they just be normal"" or "why are they so wierd?", showing their inherent discomfort with anything "abnormal".

"strange boy...don't let him go out"

"Doesn't feel like being positive all the time
Doesn't sit still, doesn't look well
Give him something, make it chemical chemical" -i dont care how you do it, just get rid of his problems

"You'll get used to cranial niches
Smoothes out neuro-tramsmitted glitches"- glitches are malfunctions, problems that are result of improper programming... not conforming to norms

"We'll have such a fabulous time
Almost imitate a normal life
You'll feel better when you cannot feel"- Such a creepy similarity to the world descibed by Huxley in "A Brave New World", in which citizens took a drug called Soma to eliminate any emotions they had, because they were conditioned to believe that emotions- be it curiosity, boredom, anger, sadness, or even love- were dangerous, and threatened the stability of society. It's a scary thought that we treat all sorts of "personality disorders" with medication, and scarier still that we think that "personality disorders" even need to be treated. Granted, extremely dysfunctional problems like serious depression and major syndromes and complexes should be treated with medication, I have no doubt that meds can help people regain a sense of normal life in cases like these. But when it comes to minor "problems" like ADD and ADHD, I'm skeptical. I was diagnosed with ADHD because I don't care much about my schoolwork, but I would consider that makes me a normal kid. I don't have trouble paying attention to things that interest me, I just don't pay attention to things that I don't find interesting. Being bored with work that isn't intellectually stimulating shouldn't be a "Attention Deficit Disorder". There's no Deficit... my Attention is focused elsewhere: on reading, or drawing, or engineering and planning a senior prank without getting caught, or replaying the conversation I just had with my girlfriend, or anything I happen to be interested at the moment; it's not a Disorder.

I think plenty of kids have personality quirks and are just labeled as having ADD, and to help them focus they're prescribed Ritalin or Adderol. The drugs used to combat ADD and ADHD amphetamine stimulants and are, in reality, low-dosages of Speed. Of course it makes you concentrate better... you just concentrate on everything.

It's true. We DO feel better when we cannot feel. Escapist outlets are often found in any drug (alcohol, marijuana, painkillers, hallucinagens, opiates, stimulants), as well as in the way people cope with emotions by ignoring them: "get over her, man" ,"suck it up, wimp", "chill out", "what makes you think you're so special?", OK so yea. I'm off topic-- I'm gonna go pop some Adderol.

mewithoutYou – Gentlemen Lyrics 20 years ago
I love the build-ups and the break-downs... when the bass is just like duh duh dun. duh duh dun. duh duh dun. and then silence, and then 2 beats on the snare... then the crashing cymbals and guitar and bass all heavy together... I actually just wanted to say how he yells the whole time, but the most arresting and powerful moment is when he gets quiet and says "and you'd better be alone"... but we've already agreed on that

Metric – Hustle Rose Lyrics 20 years ago
Haha. That's crazy, I skipped this song too... I thought the repeating "Now that your wallet is all lit up" was really annoying, but I came back to it eventually, and now I love the song. Its bizarre that I could find it so abrasive before, but now it's pretty groovey (the transition to "if you're lookin for something life-like..." is a great contrast, the way the bottom just seems to fall out and leave the electronica sound behind, and it's just her singing really softly) whew, long sidetrack... yea, so whatever I like it now.

I think that the lines... "If you’re looking for something life-like,
Hit a sardine nightclub. If every surface you touch is cold, Never go home"... are pretty important. You dont know specifics, but it seems like the guy's either in relationship that's plagued by neglect, or he's just fallen out of a relationship, and he's trying to find fulfilment in somebody else but it's not a real relationship, it's only "life-like". The line "If every surface you touch is cold, never go home" probably means that the love he'll find here is cheap and artificial, but I like to think that it's referring to his relationship; he reaches out to extend his love, but he is only met with rejection, and it leaves him cold. If everything he tries to do isn't having any effect, why wouldn’t he stand in line tonight?

Cursive – Staying Alive Lyrics 20 years ago
This is truly the most meaningful song I've ever experienced. I've never considered scuicide, but nights when I feel like shit, feel like nothing's going for me, I'll listen. It's amazing. Sure, I love thousands of other songs, but this is the only song that's ever made me cry. I rarely ever cry, only when I've completely fucked up, but this song makes me cry because it's beautiful. It's the general agreement that only emo kids cry when they listen to music, but this song isn't about petty teenage love affairs. It's about overcoming struggles, weathering the storm.

It's so surreal, I'll just sit there, and this pressure builds up in my stomache, and I just stare into space. Then I start nodding, like the steady beat of the song is somehow pushing me along. You guys are exactly right about the goosebumps, the chills, the pure raw emotion that builds up every single time I listen. And then, without fail, my eyes glaze. Overcome with emotion, I blink, and a tear escapes, running down my face.
When I realize what's happening, my mind struggles to realize what's happening:

"I'm crying? Yep. What the hell? You're such a pussy dude. I never cry, what's going on? I can't believe I'm actua- SHUT UP AND LISTEN, THE SONG'S NOT OVER YET "

It's rediculous. An outside observer would think I was insane. But it just hits me unlike anything else I've ever heard. This song just seems SO fucking significant.

Northstar – The Pornographer's Daughter Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree in regards to the title... Having a pornographer for a father would draw unwanted attention, caursing her to possibly be scorned or harrassed, which could lead to depression. This could be talking about her willingness to numb the pain, through drugs, sex, or suicide.

"And I'll be holding my breath with the best...my breath with the best intentions"
"This is not for me, your perfume struggles perfectly, it wraps around and screams at me"
"My hero tastes like plastic, he's elastic and now he's dead"
I agree that it's drug use: spraying inhalents in a balloon, blowing it up, breathing it all in... holding his breath because the best intentions are to kill the pain...
Ballons taste like plastic, and are elastic... but the highs wearing out and now it's dead.

So I pretty much agree with "krwlng n mie skn" about everything. Except for his screen name decision.

I don't get this:
"They'll break the bones that hold up my sleeves
I've got to tie her so high her breath freezes
before she speaks."

Maybe... if it's still about drug use... this could be a stretch but it could be heroin.

Look at it with punctuatuion added:
//I can't leave with words like these / they'll break the bones that hold up my sleeves / I've got to tie her / so high /
her breath freezes before she speaks//
if he's using heroin, he rolls his sleeves past his elbows or possibly his shoulders to expose the veins in his arms. He's contemplating quitting, so if the bones that held up his sleeves were broken, it'd cover up his arm.
He's got to tie his arm at the elbow to cut off circulation, which makes the veins swell, which makes them easier to stick. The person gets so high that its freezing cold (think Everest), and their breath freezes before they speak.

Maybe, but maybe not. Either way, the song still sounds docious.

Built to Spill – Sidewalk Lyrics 20 years ago
I think they're encouraging people to think for themselves, instead of listening to what society tells them. "The tubes tag along" could mean that TV is always at your side, ready to spew conventional standards that society believes you should conform to. "The radar's got it wrong" says that the information we heedlessly accept as true isn't neccessarily right. What good has come from believing everything they say?

As for the sidewalk part, I'm as clueless as an anorexic sumo wrestler.

Death Cab for Cutie – Bend to Squares Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm not a cutter, but all this talk about suicide got me thinking about what those other lyrics could mean.

But that machine could only
Bend to squares five to six times
Before your fingers came unwired...

If you were to cut your wrists, you're gonna clench your fists to expose the veins, and your fingers (machine?) are going to form roughly 90 degree angles (bend to squares). After you actually cut, it's probably gonna hurt, so you're gonna clench your fists... 5 to 6 times... but you start shutting down and your fingers come unwired. As integrity said, wires could mean veins...

Yeah. But if it's really all that complex, it's lyrical genius. I just found that pretty interesting, but then again i don't think it's entirely about suicide.

The Mars Volta – Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) Lyrics 21 years ago
I think BlackTippedWings has got it. "Midnight neuces from boxcar cadavears" I think "neuces" might be "nooses". And that might be talking about a stethescope on a doctor, and the boxcar could be the ambulance. I could be way off, but that's just my interpretation.

"Made its way through the tracks
Of a snail slouching whisper
A half mass comute through umbilical blisters "

It it is in fact talking about his ride in the ambulance, "Tracks" could be roads, "snail" could be the pace that he percieves, because morphine slows things down, and "commute" could be the ride to the hospital.

Thursday – War All The Time Lyrics 21 years ago
I think that it does have some of 9/11 in there, along with the memories of his friends. I think the overall message is "gone but not forgotten" * * * , both for his friends and the people who died in the attacks. If it didn't have anything to do with the 9/11-war deal, he wouldn't have written "nightmares on TVs", "burn on an on
like an oil field", "used to be very tall building", "now we're falling apart", "when the pieces fall", and "the fires in our streets." I mean, maybe one of those could be a coincidence, but more than five? And if he was only talking about his friends who he lost, then why would he write about "War all the time" and "Ashes of American flags"? Thats about a country, and isn't unintentional.

It's because 9/11 and his friends' suicides are both instances that happened to innocent people who had so much to live for, and both events struck close to home, making it so much more personal. Geoff linked these together because they were each a great loss, and by writing about them he could put his jumbled confused thoughts into words, a memorial to them.

* * *( i don't want to seem like one of those guys who wear "these colors don't run", "and freedom isn't free" t-shirts but that saying just seemed right in this case)

The Get Up Kids – Burned Bridges (Coalesce cover) Lyrics 21 years ago
"I've sold myself out just the same. I've burned bridges to feign brothers." Best part of the song, as far as lyrics are concerned. My second favorite song by them is "I'll catch you"

I've got Eudora, and I love it, but I was wondering what other CD I should buy... some of their songs aren't that great... I want something that's consistantly good
