Piecing together the title of the song as well as the lyrics, I think the song is about gibbard's first year at college. If you take the lyrics very literally, the first stanza is him being pissed off about how cold the attic is. He's paying his rent in full, he's asked for heat from the landlord, and they just won't fix it. His only explanation is there's ghosts in the walls. (like the myth of cold spells when ghosts are nearby). So after they fuck up trying to fix the heat, they lay the smack down and say hey, i'm not payin rent til that heat is fixed.. i'd rather sleep in a damn winter coat. The chorus is simply about him playing shows to make money to pay rent, and how entertaining people at shows is his best way to come up with dough (first defense). He decides college is more like prison, and enrolling is a "four-year offense" (like a sentence for a criminal) if you are devoted enough to stick it out and get a degree. His "invitation" was his admittance to the university, but he didn't really fit in and wasn't cut out for college (he knew he wasn't really invited.. he would never do well). So, like many people, he said fuck it and took up alcohol/drug habits and just played shows for money. The chemicals will pass through your system, but the spilt drinks will and throw up will be soaked up by the carpet. He thought college would get him success and a promising future, but failed relationships and pressing for rent led to binge drinking and what not (broken hearts and addictions). In the end, college isn't for ben, and he's playing shows just to pay his rent. |

| This song is great. I feel it's about a guy leaving the bar with his friend's girlfriend, and he's offered to drive her home. When they hit the red light, they can either go straight back to his house, or he could go right and drop her off at her place. When they are at the light, neither of them are sure of what they want to do. one of them begs the other (it's ambiguous who is begging "come on, come on"), and the other person stands strong and does the right thing, saying "i have somewhere else to be"... a "this isn't right, take me home" sort of thing. that's my take | |

This song is amazing, even if it's on repeat. Thank you this new sound. Anyhow, the meaning of this song is great. I think everyone has dated someone, or knows someone like this. His/her head is in the clouds, and they think they are too good for their significant other, or their friends. Whenever something goes wrong, they pretty much ignore it, and won't admit it's a big deal. This girl has had everything handed to her, and makes the "zookeeper's boy" feel like he's privileged to be seen with her in public. I think these lines are said sarcastically by the author: "I could not be seen with you, working half the time and looking fine." So, all in all, he wants to know if she's his lady, or not. can she be at his level, and treat him with the same respect she is treated. |

I didn't really read everyone's comments, so sorry if this has already been stated: I feel this song is about being in a relatively new relationship, and the author is already incredibly consumed by his new girlfriend, and he thinks she's absolutely amazing. He is sure he wants to commit for the long term, but is afraid to ask the girl if she feels the same way.. cuz it might scare her. So right now, he's not going to ask, but just wants to hear her say something that would let him know she wants it to. basically i think this song is all about the feeling you get when you're falling for a girl, and just want to be reassured that she feels the same way.. butterflies in your stomach, etc etc. great song |

| Onto the actual meaning of the songs.. here's some ideas. to begin with.. the last words of the song are not "f.b.i", it's just "you believe" screamed. Also, the song "elf tower" was going to be on the cd in place of "everything evil" but it was too hard to sing, but this should imply the songs have similar meaning. so here claudio/coheed has killed his sister (unfit family ties), but the next part i don't quite understand. it could be claudio/coheed screaming "jesse, come look at what your brother did, here he did away with me" as in her brother told the investigators that he killed his sister.. especially relating to the note left on the refrigerator, probably explaining the murder. the end could relate running past the fence is running away from home, but also, the fence might represent the fence of a prison, and claudio is asking if his girlfriend? will wait for him to get out if he gets caught for the murder, and the child-like letter is her answer. her answer is obviously yes, she'll go with him.. we'll make it if you believe. i haven't read the comics yet.. maybe that will clear everything up and prove me to be an idiot, but that's my 2 cents. | |

i agree that the bruise is a hickey.. but how about the lines "all i see are dark grey clouds in the distance moving closer with every hour so when you ask "is something wrong?" i think "you're damn right there is but we can't talk about it now." i can just think about how many times there were things wrong in a relationship but it was too late to talk about, or wouldn't have mattered anyway. powerful lines, i love the song, try not to pay attention to the lyrics now cuz i love my girlfriend. |

This is a great song, but i think i have a little different interpretation, let me know what you think. Once again i agree that it's talking about the tourists coming to florida in the winter (the snowbirds) and obviously the townies live there all year round. however, the debate about the girl dying in a plane crash or whatever, i don't think that is what it's about at all. it's chris regretting that his past winters with this girl have just been flings and nothing more, and this time he's not going to let just leave, maybe she'll leave florida, but this time they will have a relationship.. hence she's never leaving him again, "NOT again..." The "not again" line really gives me the feeling that he regrets letting the girl just leave him the past year, and this time he's going to stay with her. so in my mind, it's a happy song... not sad. |

the song could definitely be about losing virginity.. especially with the title and he wished he would have "wait"-ed. and the lyric is most definitely synergy, makes a lot of sense with the underlying sex theme, the joining of two people in sex, which, for the first time, can create an "apogee" of emotions/feelings. regardless, i saw something corporate perform this song live when they came to clutch cargos in michigan, and it just gave me the chills. they are the best band live, and in the studio for that matter. the composition of their songs is ingenious, and andrew's voice and stage energy makes it perfect. what a frikin song. -jeff |

| on a side note, when i saw something corporate in concert andrew said this was his favorite song they've done, also said he didn't know what it meant, i think he's full of shit, prob just would take too long to explain it, or he was stoned. anyway, soco says they have some inspiration from radiohead, you can definitely see it in lyrics such as "Away with this spilt milk, Away with this dirty dish water".... really surprised with the lack of comments on this song, one of my favorites for sure, but i love them all. | |
