I actually wrote a story one time when someone lost and injured who doesn't believe in God has, essentially, a week long conversation with a God she doesn't believe in. After bashing God in anger for most of the story, it really eventually comes out that she really needed to believe in someone there for this conversation to make sense. She was, in fact, really talking to someone, and taking comfort in that someone's presence. The point is, the fact that the singer here is spending this much time telling God why he doesn't believe in him is, in fact, an ironic admission of his belief, and his unwillingness to give in to that fact. |

I do believe many people here missed the point of the first verse. If you got something different out of it, I don't mean to quelch your interpretation - Part of the magic of songs like this is that they can mean anything you want them to mean. However, the true meaning behind the first verse rules out pregnancy or abortion. Again, if this interpretation is helping you cope in some way, then I don't want to change that for you. However, she's not talking about a friend in the literal sense, she's talking about herself. This becomes clear at the end of the song when she now states what she's doing literally - She's writing a song. The song is her friend. Can you help me unravel my latest mistake? Her song is her diary, helping her unravel the mysteries about why she acts the way she does. The entire song is her emotions, spilling out into her song, which acts as her diary. By singing this to us she's laying her soul bare and opening herself up to us. That is, in reality, what this song is about. This is her innermost thoughts about a very private matter in her life - A lover who she claims not to love until she looks at him smile. It's embarrassing to her, and something she normally wouldn't share, but by opening herself up, she also opens herself up to all the love and support others can give her... and all the critism the hypocrytes can lay on her as well. |

Correct. The bass is Scheff's father, who played the track with muted lyrics, having no idea what the song was about. That Christmas, Scheff played the whole song for him. It's a truely beautiful song about the most important person in the world to you playing beside the man everyone else considers the king, and about how hard it was to say goodbye to him everytime he went out on tour, but being able to watch him on TV, and being so proud of him. |

What scares me about Amy is that she can write lyrics that are as deep as this and yet she's only starting out. Imagine what she'll be like with a few albums under her belt. This is especially evident in the way she'll link melodies together the way she does in this song, adding new verses in the tensing of the choras rather than the initial verse. Personally, I always believed this song was about trying to keep faith in the face of a church that is alienating him. He tries so hard to hold on, and everytime he questions his faith he admonishes himself (Oh no, I've said too much). Alright, alot of you got close to the mark. Here's another one of my line-by-line, nausiatingly long but still pretty entertaining, posts. "You'll remember me when the west wind moves Upon the fields of barley" The introduction of the song. The couple in question is in the field of barley. The man has informed the woman she will remember this moment. Not much hidden meaning here, yet. "You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky As we walk in fields of gold" Pretty obvious metaphor. The field of barley is so beautiful and bright - made all the more beautiful by the presence of the woman in question - that the sun, the epitomy of brillience and light, is jealous. "So she took her love For to gaze awhile Upon the fields of barley" That was a nice way of saying they had sex in the field. "In his arms she fell as her hair came down Among the fields of gold" Ditto "Will you stay with me, will you be my love Among the fields of barley" Will you marry me? Stay with me forever? He just proposed. "We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky As we lie in fields of gold" Forget the world, all that matters is you and me. It doesn't matter what anyone else says, I want to marry you. The reference to the sun comes from stanza one, but now refers to some sort of leader, possible the family of one of the parties involved. "See the west wind move like a lover so Upon the fields of barley Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth Among the fields of gold" He's just in love. I found a whole bunch of metaphores here before I realized I was overanalyzing. This stanza really doesn't mean much. "I never made promises lightly And there have been some that I've broken But I swear in the days still left We'll walk in fields of gold" I haven't lived up to everything I've promised, but I promise you I'll always love you. "Many years have passed since those summer days Among the fields of barley See the children run as the sun goes down Among the fields of gold" Years passed, they're looking back on their proposal. Now it is no longer them who run in the fields of barley, it's their children, off to start thier own lives. I'm probably reading into this too much, but it sounds like he's describing an outcropping of the secular generation. "Levon" is a war era man, a man who's greatest passion is worshiping money. He is like everyone else in his generation, they are just greedy, arrogant people who care little about anything but making more money. Everything revolves around money. Rather than teach his son something, he shows his support by sending him to expensive schools. Jesus, on the other hand, wants more out of life. He wants to see beyond life and into the rhelm of faith. He finds religion with the others of his generation, and while Levon slowly fades away, Jesus leaves him behind and lives on forever. |
