i've read that james taylor is an atheist, and to me this is supported by the lyrics in the second verse-- "a song that they sing of their home in the sky/maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep/but singing works just fine for me." the home in the sky is heaven, and he seems to be saying that people believe in heaven because it makes them feel better about themselves/their lives/death, but jimmy doesn't need that-- music comforts him in the same way religion does for a lot of people. |

this song is about a man who was with a woman he really loved, but she cheated on him with or left him for his best friend. the song is directed to the best friend, and is about his remorse about losing the friend as well as the girlfriend. he's saying he should've known, and that he hopes it was worth it in the friend's mind.
also, i think the lyric is "in turn lost each other" not "in time" |

but it is one of my favorite smiths songs. it's really catchy. i get the "la la la" stuck in my head all the time. |

the worst part is that paul was cast in the film catch-22 as well, but at the last moment he was cut out of it, and was left alone. filming ran three months over, too, and delayed the recording of "bridge over troubled water." |

i've read an art garfunkel quote saying that the "thirty dollars pays your rent" is actually a reference to the bible- though i don't recall exactly how. i think there are several throughout the song- road to caanan, the shepards from the sheep. i'd give the link, but i don't remember what the website was...
