Maroon 5 – Must Get Out Lyrics 19 years ago
To me it sounds like a relationship that is falling apart from both sides. They still love eachother to a certain degree, and can't let go. They keep trying to make it work even though they know it won't. He is cheating on her, but still loves her, he just feels that it is hopeless at this point. He can't seem to talk to her. He listens to her cry and doesn't know what to do. He knows the relationship is falling apart, and that neither of them are happy, but even though he fools around on her he still loves her and it hurts to think that she might be doing the same, so he is going through her dresser to see if he can discover anything. He doesn't want to give up, he even blames it on the city (even though that probably has nothing to do with it really) but in the end it will probably fall apart. It is depressing.

Wilco – Jesus, Etc. Lyrics 19 years ago
My brother suggested this meaning to me a while ago. It is a unique one. If you know anything about drug culture you might know that some people, when they use substances that can be intense, choose to have someone sober with them to watch and take care of them. They call these sober individuals sitters. Ususally people like to have sitter around when they try something for the first time, or if it is a potent hallucinogen.

Jesus, don't cry
you can rely on me honey
you can combine
anything you want

This girl has a sitter who cares very much for her, but accepts that she is going to experiment with drugs and wants to take care of her while she is on them.

you were right about the stars
each one is a setting sun

Sounds very much like something someone who was on a hallucinogenic substance would say.

But at the end of the song it sounds like she either had a bad trip or an insightful one that made her want to stop using psychoactive substances.

last cigarettes
are all you can get
turning your orbit around

she's done with it all.

P.S. I am not one of those people that thinks every song is about drugs. I just think this one might be, and I have provided clear textual evidence to support this claim.

The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics 20 years ago
The beauty of this song is that the lyrics, though well written, aren't very deep. The depth comes from the basic truths about life that the story describes. He is visiting an old girlfriend, but how much she has changed amazes him. She seems "out of context" where she is, and it seems all wrong to him. One amazing thing is that despite the fact that none of the changes he describes are positive (out of context, gaudy, stranger) he still understands why he was the one worth leaving. Kind of a non sequitur thing. But perhaps he sees that he was unable to change. Amazing song, my favorite of 2003. And I can't stop listening to it.

Counting Crows – If I Could Give All My Love (Richard Manuel Is Dead) Lyrics 21 years ago
"Well, it was cold when I awoke,
and the day was halfway done.
Nearly spring in San Francisco
and I cannot feel the sun."

I love those lines. When God was handing out musical and lyrical talent, Adam must have been first in line.

The Cure – Six Different Ways Lyrics 21 years ago
Personally I think this song is about being in a relationship with six different girls at once. I've never been in that particular situation before (I find it hard enough to be in a relationship with ONE girl), but that's just what it sounds like. Great song.

The Wallflowers – God Don't Make Lonely Girls Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is amazing. It's about a girl he sees at a peep show (I think everyone knows what that is), and he sorta falls in love with her. He thinks she deserves a lot better than what she has. Eventually he gets her to come home with him. Where things go from there I guess is up in the air, but he's trying to give her a new start.

Elton John – Sad Songs (Say So Much) Lyrics 21 years ago
The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you
And it feels so good to hurt so bad
And suffer just enough to sing the blues

*Those lines describe when you are feeling what a sad song is describing so perfectly.

Thursday – Cross Out The Eyes Lyrics 21 years ago
OK, I know this is not what the song is about, but they inadvertantly described Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. By the fourth book, Lestat is having terrible dreams and visions about Claudia: "I'm hoping for something to wash these dreams of you away." Lestat had always had a lot of questions about God and Faith and whether he was evil for killing or not: "The sides we take divide us from our faith." In "Interview with the Vampire" Louis sets fire to his own house in Colonial Louisiana: "Asleep you set the fire in your own house." Claudia later was made, and she "killed" Lestat with a knife while he was paralyzed from her tricking him into drinking from children who were poisoned with absinthe. The chorus represents death, as vampires mortal bodies die when they are made. It also represents the feelings of some after they are made, like Claudia. Claudia was drained partially of blood by Louis the night before they made her, Lestat and Louis had an argument, and it was a sort of "dance" they did to her hospital bed they found her in. Lestat explained to Louis that stuff like this happened all the time, that she would die if they left her there, and that they were just giving THIS girl a chance to live. "Drain the blood from this valentine" explains itself. Lestat also compares vampires to "candles in the dark" often. "Yours always" - vampires don't change physically from the time they are made, and Claudia would remain a little child with the same length hair etc. Then in "The Tale of the Body Thief" Lestat nearly dies when he is in a mortals body (read the books if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about...they are good.) He was unconscious for a long time, and spoke with Claudia while he was close to death. Anyway, there are other small things, and I'm not saying that is what the song is about, just that it fits, if you've read the books, comment.

Counting Crows – Daylight Fading Lyrics 21 years ago
This is a great song; the first two lines are amazing. I do think it is about a girl who hurt the speaker of the song, and he is trying to cope and move on. To me this is one of the hardest songs of theirs to interperate along with "Round Here." Definitely the best lyric-music combinations around. Their instrumentals support their vocals so well.

Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics 21 years ago
The line: "well there's a piece of maria in every song that i sing" makes me laugh every time I hear it. In "Round Here" Maria represents a female version of Adam himself. So really he is saying that there is a piece of him in every song he sings obviously. The funny part, though, is that I read a very negative review of the CD "This Desert Life" by some critic saying that if it was the same Mariah that Adam should stop whining and get a life. The line is actually really clever and that critic was really ignorant about counting crows music in general. That's why it makes me laugh.

Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics 21 years ago
It is about a guy who broke up with this girl for reasons he considered "rational" at the time. That is the meaning, he was a scientist, and he looked at his relationship from the outside and decided he didn't want to be in it anymore. Then he realized that he couldn't look at it without his heart and wanted her back. Also, the line is "numbers and figures"

This song is great. It's got the most clever lyrics in places. I like it a lot. I've heard people say a lot about John Mayer, but I have yet to hear anyone who can play guitar and sing at the same time as well as Mayer can. He is a talented musician.

I'm sorry, but for some reason the line "I'm half the man I used to be." reminds me of John Bobbet. It's just that this song came on right after they were talking about it on the radio, and now I can't enjoy this song. Someone please help me.

no, listen to the song "down" off their album "No. 4" it's a great song, and scott's voice sounds just like it does in this song. I think he is just a very talented singer who changes the sound of his voice with the feeling he wants to give in his music. Either way, this song is a great song.

Rage Against the Machine – Revolver Lyrics 21 years ago
You guys are probably right, but the way I saw it first was in relation to the fact that when a divorce occurs their is often a discriminate decision that places the children with the mother even if their father is a perfectly capable and loving father. It is getting better in America, but is still there. I thought that the line "hey revolver, don't mothers make good fathers?" was kinda sarcastic as the father who is tired of not being able to be a big part of his children's lives gets ready to take control again.

Yeah, I think everyone has the right idea about the meaning of this song (not that I know anything). My favorite lines are "All caught up in the trends well the truth began to bend and the next thing you know man there just aint no truth left at all.
Cause when the pretty girl walks, she walks so proud,
and when the pretty girl laughs, oh man, she laughs so loud." Kind of shows how people get carried away with trying to look like models and such.

By the way, the lyrics at the end read:

Rain, rain, go away

My sister's mother's favorite son
Lost among the chosen ones
But I've got news for everyone
Cuz I'm going out that door

Everclear – Wonderful Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is very straight forward in what it means. One of the few songs that describes divorce with as much feeling as I feel about it. The end is the most powerful, the vocals make him sound like he feels all the pain and anger and loss that many of us know too well.

Counting Crows – Ghost Train Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is a great song. I like the very beginning where it sounds kind of like a train. The song is kind of scary though in the statement it makes about relationships. Both her reason for getting on the train and his reason (or lack of) for getting off is the scary part.

Counting Crows – Perfect Blue Buildings Lyrics 22 years ago
Adam stated once that "this song is about me." It's about depression. His disease is depression. The "beds in little room" statement is just a statement about how meaningless life is to a person sometimes. Keep me awake? - it is about depression again and not falling for the unrealistic fantasies a person can have when they are depressed. Sleeping too much is closely related with depression. Probably the most depressing crows song, and one of the most depressing songs in music.

Wow why are there no posts here? This song is a great song. It's about faith...wanting to have faith, wanting someone to have faith in you...and about faith in God. I think this song to me, was the first crows song that ever really got me interested in the crows. And it's the kind of song that just makes you want to get up and do something, anything.

Toadies – Tyler Lyrics 22 years ago
Once you figure out the lyrics for the first time, you immediately know that the song is about a stalker and rapist. Freaked me out when I figured out the lyrics (it's hard to tell what he is saying in some places, but these lyrics are correct.)

Toadies – Possum Kingdom Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is about a guy who loves a girl so much, that when she denies him he kills her (possibly rapes her too, if you get that from the lyrics.) But it is a really artistic song because all you are hearing is the killer/rapists voice. You have to imagine 'her' saying "no" after he says or asks something in the song, and that's why he repeats it an octave lower (sounds like he's getting angry.) Great song. Funny how the more artistic the song the more twisted and scary it is. You hear rap songs about rape all the time, but they are not as scary as a song like this, or songs like "sex type thing" by STP.

This is about waiting for a girlfriend to arrive and thinking that it's not gonna work out anyway so why the hell even wait here. One of us is gonna screw up and we aren't going to be together. But in the end he just kinda says oh hell, why think this way... it doesn't help anything. So it is really an uplifting song.

Counting Crows – A Long December Lyrics 22 years ago
The song is about memories and the future. It was written when Adam was going to a hospital frequently to visit a friend who was in a car accident. He wrote the song and after the band practiced it about 6 times, they recorded it. And that seventh time they played it is the time you here on the CD.

Third Eye Blind – Motorcycle Drive By Lyrics 22 years ago
This is probably one of my favorite 3eb songs, it is an amazing song both lyrically and instrumentally. If you read closely the line "And I've never been so alone
And I've never been so alive" means something different each time. The first time it is a sort of "I'll get over you" line, and the last is a "yeah I'm Alive, but I don't want to be" If you read the last verse carefully you get the feeling he is going to kill himself.
