Tool – Schism Lyrics 21 years ago
All right, here's my opinion on the matter.... Maynard is obviously a very well-read person, just judging from all of the various allusions he makes to fairly obscure writings and such. So it makes very little logical sense to assume that he doesn't know about the Great Schism. What makes more sense is to assume that he does indeed know about it, and is probably in fact using it as a metaphor to explain and expound upon various other schisms. This fits in perfectly with most other Tool songs where he uses one example to prove a broad political point (examples: "Hooker with a Penis" - one kid calling Tool sellouts turns into a rant about the evils of capitalism and how we are all part of the system, and "Aenema" - doomsday predictions about California sinking into the ocean are turned into a discussion about how we need to cleanse ourselves by flushing all of the corruption away, wherein L.A. is a symbol for everything wrong with the world). In light of this empirical evidence, and the common sense portion of it (is "schism" really a word anyone, even a genius like Maynard, uses in everyday conversation? Doesn't it make more sense that he used it purposefully for its literal definition, to use as a metaphor?), every other interpretation up here is right, including the one using the literal definition of the Great Schism between the churches. In this case, the song IS about religion, it IS about Zen philosophies, it IS about relationships (although I doubt it's the typical N'SYNC type fare of boy-meets-girl-who-breaks-his-heart relationships....I refuse to believe Maynard would sink to that low), and it IS about the Great Schism. Tool is never "just" talking about people, or anything else. It's all metaphorical.
Just my opinion....I could be wrong.

Glassjaw – Ape Dos Mil Lyrics 22 years ago
Personally.....I think this song is about not giving in to religion and peer pressure in that sense. "I walk around with my horns out", as in "I'm not a Christian, and I'm proud of it"....he's saying to stand up for what you believe in spiritually, whether it is socially acceptable or not, politically correct or not, no matter what anyone says. Very admirable. I think.

Breaking Benjamin – Polyamorous Lyrics 22 years ago
From what I understand.... The song is about him "thinking with the wrong head", so to speak. He's saying that he knows better than to chase every chick he sees, but his "polyamorous friend" (aka his dick) causes him to do it anyways. I think.

Pulse Ultra – Acceptance (phase I) Lyrics 22 years ago
I think that Pulse Ultra are condemning the patriotism that was running rampant after 9/11. They are saying that the tragedy shouldn't have been the reason Americans are patriotic, that the "the skyscrapers are too big to bring down", and that we need to quit using that as our rallying point, as too many of the "mind rapers" are doing. I think.

Lostprophets – The Fake Sound Of Progress Lyrics 22 years ago
One small correction to whomever posted these.... Right after he says "smile again..." he doesn't scream "smile", he screams "swing dat", talking to the guitarist who does his bridge there.... I think.

Dope – Now Or Never Lyrics 22 years ago
What do you guys think the line "Sooner or later I wanna believe" means? It doesn't really seem to fit with the rest of the song, but somehow it does.....

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 22 years ago
MJK does indeed say in various places that this song wasn't written about blind faith in God (especially the Christian God), so I don't really think there is much argument for that interpretation (although I still believe that the song has a lot to say about it, and that it is a VERY valid message for anyone, not just Christians or religious people....some atheists should take a look at why they disbelieve) -- too often in the world today people just do what they are told to do, like what they are told to like, and continue on like lemmings marching off a cliff. It's pathetic! So many people, trying so hard to be different that they are all the same. Look at the world around you, think about the HOWS and the WHYS of it all, and then make your decision FOR YOURSELF! It's the only way to make anything worthwhile. I don't know for certain that there is or is not a God (or whatever other name you want to insert, it's all man-made and therefore pointless at that level), but I figure that if I live my life according to well-reasoned moral decisions then if I am wrong and there is an afterlife, all my bases are covered. After all, any God who says "You know, you did everything exactly the way I would've wanted it....but you didn't worship me by name, therefore I'm going to damn you to eternal hell" isn't really worth being worshipped, now is he/she? If I made a statement like that, I'd get my ass handed to me! Just my opinion.

Sevendust – Denial Lyrics 22 years ago
Personally, I think the song is about someone he used to love, but she would never admit any of it. She made him say everything about what they felt for each other, and he got sick of trying to carry on a one-sided relationship so he's telling her to f*ck off now. Having been in a situation like that in the past, this song is very catharthic for me.

Type O Negative – Black no. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All) Lyrics 22 years ago
Jesterboy is exactly right, I think. Type O have come out before talking about how sarcastic most of their lyrics are. His mock praise of this chick is more likely just mockery. Check out "Periodic Tableware" and "Everyone I Love Is Dead" for more sarcasm....

Ever seen the video for this? It's a little freaky, and Peter Steele looks like a vampire (more so than usual)....fairly cools.

Slipknot – People = Shit Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with Vince.....the drumming here is INCREDIBLE, just as most of Joey's is. He runs 2 miles out and 2 miles back before EVERY concert, and 5 miles every day, just to keep his legs strong enough to play drums. Also, from what I understand he is a very accomplished musician....on the Resident Evil soundtrack, he did production on a couple of remixes, and there is a side project of his called (I can't remember the name right away....it's on Roadrunner Records I know) where he plays guitar instead of drums. Should be cools.

Slipknot – Left Behind Lyrics 22 years ago
I think what they're saying is that rather than deal with all the shit they see going on, the "robot faces" being all the people who just take what they're told as gospel (just a quick FYI by the way -- thalidomide is a major part of most perscription anti-depressants, like Prozac and such), and just all the other shit that happens, so now instead of feeling all the pain of the world, they're going to "calcify" and "let it all slip away", so that they don't have to feel the pain that the stupd pathetic sheep are causing them.

Slipknot – The Heretic Anthem Lyrics 22 years ago
Actually, according to what Corey has said, the numbers in the song are a take on The Bloodhound Gang song "Fire Water Burn", where he says "if man is 5 and the devil is 6 then that must make me 7" -- it's an ascension thing. Becuse I'm 666, I'm above someone who's 555. They just triple the numbers to fit the rhyme scheme and play on the association of 666 with Satan. It's partly an attention grab and partly a statement of superiority.

Ill Niño – What Comes Around Lyrics 22 years ago
I'm a DJ for a local rock station (www.kkbs.com -- I run the Sunday Night Music Meeting) -- I met Ill Nino during the Jaegermeister Tour when they came through Tulsa, OK. First off, let me say that they are some of the nicest guys I've ever met. Very cool to me, even though I was approximately half their size. Also, jenebeanie is absolutely right on what the song means. It's about a fight he had with an ex, and he's basically saying that all the shit she put him through is coming back around on her, now that he's gone. Cris and Laz said that all the songs on the CD were written from personal experience, with Cris (the lead singer) not even being able to listen to it afterwards because of the emotion he put into it. Also, you are all right: Ill Nino ROCKS live! They should have been headlining the Jaegermeister Tour, because they were ten times better than Drowning Pool, and I'm a DP fan! I highly recommend their CD, Revolution/Revolucion. Every track is good. P.S. -- Just a little pre-release note for you: Unreal will be the next single, within the next 6 months.

Marilyn Manson – Lunchbox Lyrics 22 years ago
Akasha -- the background lyrics are a fictional sampling of a lunchroom fight. He is trying to eat his lunch, and the school bully is messing with him, trying to provoke a fight. The "something falling over" is his lunchtray being dumped on the floor, then you hear the bully laugh.

Marilyn Manson – Man That You Fear Lyrics 22 years ago
I think you are right on the "manson becoming a god" thing, but I think the song goes a little beyond that. He had a hard childhood that he still resents his family over, but he still realizes that he was loved and that they tried to do what they thought was right for him (even though that was trying to convert him into a "normal" person). So he was "the boy that you loved." But now, because of his notoriety and influence, he is "the man that you fear"... Parents are afraid of him now because of the influence he wields over their children. So in the video, he is stoned because they fear his power to corrupt....the same as what happened to Jesus, actually, despite Manson's (and my) anti-religious views. The parallels to the crucifiction of Christ are all intentional, meant to show that we always kill the things we love, because love leads to power, and we fear those in power.
