Jefferson Airplane – ReJoyce Lyrics 7 years ago
I've always thought, without knowing of course and having never read Joyce, that the first lines were:
Pentacle chains - like a lace,
You've shouted the warning - amber light,
Needless to say, I've never been good at figuring out what many rock singers are actually saying. Thank goodness for the internet!

Toadies – Away Lyrics 7 years ago
Might be a stretch but listening to Todd Lewis lyrics always conjures the perspective of the undead to me. This one is especially fun to listen to from the perspective of a vampire.

You say forever
And I confess I shiver
- funny sentiment coming from someone who will walk the earth forever.

You say hope
I say that's where I'm goin'
To be in the shade
The oldest trees above my head
- my coffin.

When I'm away, I know in my heart
There is a heaven
- because its the one place I cannot go.

If I'm out hunting
Come right on in, yeah
- you will make a nice snack when I get back.

And even when I'm gone
My doors are always open
-seriously, make my job easy here.

And if I'm asleep
Make sure my blanket covers me, yeah
-so I can bite you.

When I'm away, I know in my heart
There is a heaven
-again, because its the one place left I've been banished from.

When I'm away
To be in the shade
The oldest trees above my head
When I'm away, I know in my heart
There is a heaven

Come right on in, yeah

Cold Chisel – Flame Trees Lyrics 7 years ago
After watching "Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy" last night, I have a whole new perspective on this utterly brilliant Chisel classic.

Jimmy himself said that it's about moving back to the Adelaide suburb of Elizabeth after spending a year in Armidale with Don, who went back there to finish his honours degree in Quantum Physics of all things, with the rest of the band.

Elizabeth was the first place in Australia where he had a real home for an extended period of time, but his parents fought constantly and he was surrounded by alcoholism and despair the entire time he was there. Hence the mixed feelings about moving back to such a place.

Until I heard that straight from Jimmy's mouth, I would have agreed with most of the comments here; that the song is about moving back to a small country town after having left an old flame there many years ago. But now I think that maybe "her/she" is referring to the town itself, or possibly his mother (who walked out on him and his siblings when they were all under 12 years old!).

But then again, Don wrote the song, so perhaps it IS about him moving back to Grafton after having spent most of his adult life in Adelaide. But I guess we'll never really know...

In the end I don't think that this song (or any song for that matter) is meant to be interpreted in a single, finite way. Music is about evoking the feelings and story that is relevant to EACH INDIVIDUAL LISTENER, rather than the people who write it.

The Cure – Pictures of You Lyrics 7 years ago
@[get:28111] up kid FWIW the original liner notes (and the official Cure website) does say "wider than snow." I remember thinking it must be a typo, but still every time I listen to the song I hear "wider than snow." It is somehow more poetic than "whiter than snow" which is about as juvenile a metaphor you can come up with.

Lyle Lovett – Fiona Lyrics 7 years ago
@[BarryKardon:28089] It's actually "Bartender set 'em up...." You probably know that by now, and it's still your favorite line, but a better line. One of my favorites from this song is "She did not even start to wait...."

Camouflage – The Great Commandment Lyrics 7 years ago
Some people suppress you, They partch you. They put you down and dry you out so that you are vulnerable to anything that is taught. You will feel those teachings quench your thirst for knowledge. The disaster is the dry, partched person, without knowledge one cannot grow. Reeducation for the infants - young innocent beings knowing all that innocent children know just by watching the world in their eyes.. They are suppressed by being reeducated and being taught that the world is not what the see it to be. They demanded the world to be so, but are reeducated with a religious or political ideology which is suppressible in nature.

The Great Commandment is taken from the christian bible

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

The lyrics could mean the contempt persons have for the life path they are on (the pavement) or the path (life) being very rough for the person traveling it. So far we are born innocent, taught that the world is not how we see it when we are very young and innocent, suppressed and then forced to learn a moral code not of our own making. The lyrics are suggesting "Believe the scholars, read the readings".. The two aren't necessarily priests or religious persons, but maybe philosophers Realize the man who says anything, could be either religious or not, but it serves as a warning to not trust him and to educate ourselves.

The needies believe you...Needies, which could mean the previously mentioned partched innocents, dry and lifeless, a disaster because there was no growth. And then the reeducation again.

Fascist regimes such as nazi Germany, China, and North Korea all used to have reeducation camps where it's captives were drilled with teachings supporting their governments and regimes, and against democracy and freedom of thought. It's captives were in a way, brainwashed and that is a disaster for it's victims.

I read too much into this shit.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 7 years ago
So sad you would be so limited in that interpratation! One man's curiousity does not the whole band sway, and it was a trist at best! I would look at the colledge background of Bobby first befor you get too personal with internalizing your hopes for the song inspired by a 16th centurie melody!

The Doors – Riders On The Storm Lyrics 7 years ago
@[NCguard63:28030] It's "An actor out on loan," not "An actor out alone." It's a poetic reference to the old studio system, when actors were under contract to one of the major studios. Sometime, another studio wanted to use a certain actor for their movie, so they would negotiate with the studio which the actor worked for, to release him or her from the contract for that one film only. The studio who owned the actor's contract would be paid handsomely for the :oan" of the actor, based on what they figured they might lose in revenue, based on what his or her box office draw would have been, had he or she not been l"loaned out", but had instead starred in one of their pictures, instead of having to go with someone lower down on the totem pole.

The X-ecutioners – It's Going Down Lyrics 24 years ago
dudes, i think this song rocks! luv the way Mike collaborates with the X-ecutioners on this song. Well, i think this song is about freestyling. When one freestyles, one has to quickly come up with rhymes that go together well. Such as when Mike says, "To blur the edges so they blend together properly, take you on an audible odyssey..." Also it may give it away when Mike says, "Reflects the complex hybrid dialect now,
Detect the mesh of many elements compressed down,
The melting pot of a super-futureesque style,
The combination of a vocal caress,
With lungs that gasp for breath..." In addition, remember the people freestyling are battling to see who is the best at rhyming words and such. Haha, or i may just be all wrong in my thinking process. Ne wayz have a good day!
