Wow, all the irony and paradoxes aren't gonna get you anywhere Maynard. The speaker feels that he is always being blamed by others for everything he does wrong. And obviously he doesn't think much of himself. "Why can't we not be sober?" has a double-negative. Simplify it-- 'why can't we be drunk'-- he doesn't want to be sober and think, he wants to drown the problems. (Not that the song endorses alcoholism or anything.)
"Jesus won't you fucking whistle/something but the past and done" is a rhetorical question. It asks higher powers for help for the present and to come.
And I don't hear any whispering. Have I been listening to the song too loud? |

This is a love song. Just... a love that's been lost. The speaker seems to recognize why the relationship has fallen apart, but he's still just bitching and moaning. |

The song is just to point out that the people in LA are trivial and in need of change. The allusions to the armageddon and flooding is to show how desperately needed it is, plus the speaker's a little pissed off. The song is filled with verbal irony but all you need to work with is "Don't just call me pessimist/ Try and read between the lines/ I can't imagine why you wouldn't/ Welcome any change my friend."
And the allusion to mom is just that our moms fix everything and make it all better. I love you mom. |

The "one holy medium" is probably the Bible's phrase "Do unto others what has been done to you". It brings the speaker peace of mind because it seems to justify his vengeance. Payback brings comfort. The song isn't specific to any victim-victimizer relationship. Just about turning the tables. |

If I might take it a little further... the song is about how things must escalate more and more to keep from the boredom monotony brings. The fisting metaphor is familiar to what Tool does with their magical powers. An underlying theme would ask the question if you trust your loved one to go the limits with them. Do you trust someone sticking their fingers... |

If the recounting of the Gein story sounds familiar, you probably saw "Psycho" and remember the Buffalo Bill character from "The Silence of the Lambs". I love my mother too. |
