Dashboard Confessional – Knock 'em Dead Lyrics 23 years ago
your lyrics are pretty close, but i have a few disagreements...

"you only have one shot"
"i can hear ethan screaming"

and you missed the last part of the song:

"And I would've thought that I had more color than him,
My skin has gone stark white and an ash colors my skin,
I'd sworn off of making up sincere words for you."

by christian he means satanist...dashboard confessional is a satanic band...you shouldn't listen to him because you (like you imply) only listen to christian music...i would stick to jars of clay, amy grant, and creed if i were you. god bless.

ps - what middle school were you class of 2000 at?

somewhere out there, someone is arguing that "this new kenny g is not jazz...you want jazz, you need bird or coltrane"...

same deal with emo...we all know where it started out (i hope), but it's evolved along the years. the way it's tossed around these days is ridiculous...hell, according to today's definition, all country songs are emo, along with all r & b. the point is, we can't score scene points for properly defining emo because no one can anymore. you could in 92 or 86...but not anymore.

as far as toad is concerned, i believe this song to be one of the best i've ever heard, and one of the most fun to play and sing. i guess i didn't expect an emo debate here though... :)

i'm pretty sure he's talking about milwaukee's best beer (nicknamed "beast") when he says "bottle of beast"...although i've never seen it in bottles...and "i'm missing your bed" is pretty self explanatory...he doesn't sleep in her bed anymore...just for reference, this FAQ page used to be up when the dashboard forum was running in full effect...

1. no one can ever define "emo", so don't try to, especially by spouting off names of bands you don't even listen to but found by entering the word "emo" in google (i.e. rites of spring, embrace, shelter, etc.)

2. don't harsh on people's highs. if you don't like dashboard, fine, but don't tell other people why they shouldn't like them, or worse yet, pretend you don't like them when you really do just because they're on the radio/mtv now and it's cooler not to like them.

3. so the lyrics are sappy. who cares? if it reaches out to people, good. i don't see any of the music you wrote being sung by people. if they are, send them to me.

4. listen to what you like. music is entertainment, expression, and emotion. don't get hung up on labels, or you'll lead a sad sad life.

5. i just bought 250 thread count egyptian cotton sheets and boy are they comfy.

nobody owns music. sure the artists/record companies own the copyright, but that's about it. you girls make me angrier than the "prep" girls you are talking about. to categorize people by what they like or what music they listen to or who they hang out with is stupid. you'll realize this once you're out of high school. by the way, i personally dig cheerleaders, especially the uniform.

if a band is good ("good" being subjective to what the masses approve of at the moment), they're going to get popular. this is not selling out. this is called success. very few people can be successful without being overexposed by such entities as mtv or radio (ani difranco is a great example). so get over yourselves, and choose whether to enjoy the artist or not. this is the only power you have over music.

fugazi is a great band. fugazi is mainstream. don't even tell me you haven't seen fugazi shirts (especially the "this is not a fugazi shirt" one) everywhere.

mainstream does not equal bad. it just makes people feel less cool because they're not the only ones listening to it, thus making them not special and different from everyone else. i like the counting crows. a lot. so sue me.

none of this really applies in our lives anyway (at least i hope not). someone wise once said "arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics: even if you win, you're still retarded". now don't be all huffy puffy and get your panties in a bunch because i used the word retarded (because emo kids are super sensitive). just know that it's true. :)

do yourselves a favor and just listen to the music you like, not what someone tells you to. although, you should be open to suggestions. such as mineral or texas is the reason. have fun.

i agree in that the acoustic pre-release version of this song is better. the last three stanzas are only on the album version. would love to see jack surf.

i agree with you, but you have to give some of the new fans a little credit. some of them were not fortunate enough to have friends to introduce them to good music, and some of them live in a town with no scene at all. people that live in bigger cities and can get involved in their local scene should feel lucky.

what needs to be known by all you new fans is that there is a whole world of good music like this, and you're just experiencing the tip of the iceberg. hell, some people i know would go as far as saying dashboard sucks (and they've always thought that) and the "exposed 'emo'" is commercialized. they won't be happy until you listen to rites of spring 20 times a day and rave about the new appleseed cast or owls album.

most music is discovered through word of mouth, and mtv is a gigantic mouth that can speak to many people. true, if you aren't being an individual and you swallow what mtv regurgitates to you, you should be slapped in the face. but i guarantee you that most of the "underground" music us "scenesters" listen to were brought to our attention most likely by our friends telling us about them. mtv is the same thing, just on a bigger scale and very very very evil.

by the way, watchthefireworks, the "emo" in my name is a joke :) and guitar7272, nice work on the lyric incorporation into your post :)

the sad fact is, that people will always be bitter that "their band" has gotten big. i've been a listener of this band, along with many others way before they've become famous...even in the underground scene. does that make me cooler? no. there were people before me listening to fugazi and husker du that introduced it to me in the 8th grade. i paid $2 to see jimmy eat world back in 94. if it wasn't for an older friend talking me into going, i wouldn't have experienced that. i used to think i was really young when i got into the scene, but damn, i went to a show the other day and there were some serious 8 year olds rocking out. that makes me happy.

sure you feel good knowing about a good band before it's exploited, and you feel cheated when that something "special" now belongs to everyone, but the fact remains that as a musician, your goal is to get your music heard by the masses and at the same time, make some money so you can keep doing what you love for a living. the only thing that pisses me off is when the band changes and doesn't stay true to their music, as i feel dashboard has. but who cares? my opinion isn't going to take away airplay from them or enough concert ticket sales to matter. they'll do what they'll do and we deal with it. the end.

also, a lot of people on here need to learn how to spell/type. you can really tell who the intelligent people here are. they're most likely not the ones that use the number four instead of "for", or the letter u for "you".
