John Vanderslice – When It Hits My Blood Lyrics 21 years ago
Another song I'd assume to be about a movie on Cellar Door (Promising Actress the other), this time about "Requiem For A Dream." Pawning his mom's tv to buy drugs, shooting up, mom's addicted to diet pills, driving to Florida, etc. Another really good song. I like how the chorus slows, it's a bit dreamy, like he's just shot up.

Seems pretty clear he's talking about David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive." The key on the table, "a look inside" (the blue box maybe?), film within a film ("her story's a hoax...it's just light replayed"), and of course, the cowboy. Complicated movie....took me a few viewings to feel like I MIGHT actually understand it...but it's good and the song is great too.

Sufjan Stevens – Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid) Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm from about 15 minutes north of Flint. It was pretty much one of the centers of the automotive industry for a long time, behind Detroit, but if you saw Roger and Me you probably know what happened. Industry has been pulling out, Flint was failing. I can see where the lost my job, lost my room comes from.

Sufjan Stevens – The Upper Peninsula Lyrics 21 years ago
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan boomed in the late 1800s and early 1900s with iron and copper mining and lumber, but when those resources were depleted the people went where the work was, like Wisconsin. I've heard that in the Keewanaw peninsula (the most northern part the "U.P.") there was around 88,000 people back then. Now there is something like 4,500. That's crazy. Today there isn't always a lot of work up there, unemployment is high, so is alcoholism.

Sondre Lerche – Two Way Monologue Lyrics 21 years ago
Well he mentions Michael Landon, the star and, well, face of the television shows and movies based on The Little House on the Prairie books, blindness (one of the sisters went blind, I looked it up and it was Mary), and prairie-life, so I'm guessing this song is inspired by The Little House on the Prairie tv series. Not that I watched the show on summer vacation mornings when I was younger or anything......
