Ok...why is everyone arguing over a song? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And just because someone likes their song doens't mean they don't know what goog music is. I like this song b/c it's fun to dance to, but I like other songs (like Dave Matthews Band for example.) Let's not argue over music though, it's so pety to argue over something like this...music is made so we can ENJOY it not argue over it. |

I CAN FINALLY SETTLE THIS ARGUEMENT. I was reading one of my Dave books, "Dave Matthews Band, Step into the Light" and this is a direct quote from the book. "Matthews says that "#41," a poignant song with striking vocal octave jumps and sustained falsetto holds, was written around the time he had a parting of ways with longtime friend and business associate Ross Hoffman. "I was thinking about where I come from, and why I wrote songs and what was my inspiration. And how I was now in this situation where those things that I'd done, I so loved, had now suddenly become a source of incredible pain for me. Suddenly, there's all this money and people pulling, asking, 'Where's Mine?' The wild dogs come out. The innocense of just wanting to make music was kinda overshadowed by the dark things that come along with money and success. So it's a song about looking back, but at the same time, a song that's still adamantly looking forward and going,'But I'm still going to carry on, regardless'" |

This song didn't start out as an instrumental...it had words. The man he dedicated it to helped me write it, and after he died, Dave never sang the words. Well, that's what I've read. It's a beautiful instrumental, it reminds me of Satellite in some ways. |

star_watcher,321, I'm a girl...I know that has nothing to do with my interpretation of this song, but I thought I would clear that up.
Anyway...I agree, we should just soak up the song, who cares what the real meaning of the song is...maybe there is no TRUE meaning...but it's such a great song we can't ruin it by arguing over it. It's a beautiful song and I'm sure Dave has a beautiful meaning to go along with it. |

I think the saying that he would love to go back to how it use to be. Playing for himself and no one else. Now that he's famous, he can't play for just himself, he has to play for everyone else...like he says, "Remember when I used to play for All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now." He doesn't like the extras that go along with the fame he has now. (If that makes sense, lol.)

I think this song is pretty simple to understand. I know I feel the way he does. Sometimes you just wish everything would work out, that you'd find the answer in a night...but in reality it could take a lifetime. And sometimes we wish that what is real...would be a dream..because we can wake up from dreams...but you can't wake up from reality. |

I agree with NoApoLogiEs, the song doesn't have to be about God or a person, but about who you want it to be. It's whatever YOU get out of it. I think it can also be about something. Like some sort of addiction (alcohol, addiction, etc.) I don't think anyone can tell you what this song means...you have to find it yourself.
And..as for the people who are on here and aren't talking about the song..well..you need to find a chat room or somewhere to disagree...but then again, that's just my opinion. |
