| Jens Lekman – Black Cab Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I really like the interpretations here - Even though I think others are more align with what Jens was thinking, for me this reminds me of a long night out with friends, especially lines like: 'I killed the party again God damn, God damn' Although I think Jens means he ruined the party for his friends because he was so quiet in the next verse, for me, 'killing the party' can be a good thing, as in, 'We killed it!!! God damn! Hells ya! ' 'I feel like going home But at the same time, I don't' He probably means he's tired/depressed but doesn't want to go home because he'll have to take a black cab, but for me, sometimes when I'm out late, I look around at my friends and we're thinking okay, its 12:30am, do we go to another party place, or go home and sleep? 'I want to sleep in my bed I want to clean up my head Don't want to look this dead Don't want to feel this dread' Reminds me of getting home and crashing, then being hungover lol |

| Jann Arden – Good Mother Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I sometimes use this song to simultaneously calm me and psych me up before giving a big speech, interview, or any situation where I need to be a bit brave. I picture my mom or dad supportively saying, 'Go for it, Baby!' I don't have everything on Jann's list, but it also reminds me to balance my desires with giving gratitude. Music-wise, I especially love the drums and how the sounds really build :) |

| Jens Lekman – I Don't Wanna Die Alone Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
The title is a bit morbid, but I like how the beat is uplifting and the lyrics seem to hint that he's fondly remembering someone in particular from his past. Perhaps he is missing that person and wants to be with them (it's not the being alone that's the problem, it's the lack of that particular person)? Or, maybe he decides that in the end, the memory of that person is enough to keep him from being lonely. Perhaps he is fine dying with just their memory, him and his budgies, without that luggage of an actual relationship? Regardless, I can relate to being on the subway, everyone around me pre-occupied and feeling like I'm having my own little party. The spoilt little brat line makes me laugh, as Jens often does! |

| The New Pornographers – Crash Years Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Great interpretations - I do think this song is about an economic crash and a nation in crisis. Like caffeinediary, I automatically interpreted 'the skirts go up before the war' as a baby-making line, but bohemianblues economic interpretation also make so much sense. The line about being a living doll riding circle tracks is one of my favourites. Those old cuckoo clocks with the figures that are stuck endlessly on one path, just counting hours and going in circles speaks to the helpless feeling people experience in these situations. I believe this also ties into having 'enternity blues' as the situation feels so hopeless and people worry about their future after losing everything. I agree that 'honey child, you're not safe here' is a reference to Panic, which is another song about a nation in crisis. Musically, this song is so beautiful too! |

| Joan Baez – Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Yes, this song did inspire Led Zeppelin - I'm surprised this, the original version, has so few comments! I really like Joan's live performance, as her voice has this haunting quality and the guitar conveys a sense of urgency and restlessness. I like vphi's interpretation. Personally, I like to interpret it as a metaphor. Like being in a relationship which you know isn't quite right - you feel like you can't commit and you can already see how it will end - but winter is cold and lonely and you care about them, so you don't want to leave them until summer. |

I honestly think this song is about him having his first child. It's funny because that's almost immediately what I interpreted when I first heard it, but no one here has referenced this idea. Perhaps becoming a father has turned his world upside down and given him new perspectives on life - especially the verse: Walking Crawling Climbing Falling All my life has found it's meaning I feel like he's watching his little one and sees new meaning for his life and new hope. I'm not a parent so I can't say I have any experience, lol, but this is just my interpretation. |

| Travis – Why Does It Always Rain On Me? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I’d love to lead a rendition of this at a bar somewhere — I think it would be fun to belt out as a group. Any takers? I agree with AlmightyChrissy - sometimes I want to laugh, sometimes cry Sometimes it makes me wants to cry when I’m going through hard times, because, let’s face it, it’s a sad song with features, insomnia, identity crisis; it even has a sad violin intro. Sometimes it makes me want to laugh because of the futility of the situation. As strangersatellite said, we want to understand why this crap happens to us. What’s with all the bad karma? Even when it’s sunny I get shocks of lightening. Is it because of that time when I was 17 and I lied about eating the last cookie? But really, at the end of the day, it’s bad weather, and even though we can’t justify why, we have no choice but to accept it. I’m going through really poop time right now — for me personally, this signifies the recent fail of a string of relationships and failed love, while all my friends are married, engaged, or very close to engagement. It’s my pity-party-of-one song. ‘Why does it always rain on ME?’ I feel like there’s some bad-luck love raincloud following me around or something. My only hope is that rain is not permanent...so maybe someday I’ll meet someone special to be my sunshine... |

| Foggy – In Your Eyes Lyrics | 15 years ago |

This song is so sad but so pretty! It’s about looking into someone’s eyes, and having all these expectations, you see your love growing into a future together, but they decide to end it and you’re in denial, left to wonder what went wrong. These lyrics are missing an important stanza: After: ‘I see the love light shined on me In your eyes, in your eyes, in your eyes’… It’s missing: ‘As if blue skies bring some rain I feel the blood rush in my veins I never want to see you cry Recently you said good night Did not believe it for a while But you really meant good bye ‘ I like how the voice is very soft, and the way the music crescendos I also like how the lyrics have great visuals — you can experience looking into someone’s eyes, and feeling the blood rush in your veins when you see them cry or sense trouble. |

Ok, so this doesn't fall within my typical genre of preferred music, but somehow today I really wanted to listen to this song because I think I finally understand it (or what it means to me anyway). I think, in summary, she's lonely. She met a young man who is totally into her, really intense, an easy lover. She's not so sure. She is really enjoying the attention and companionship, but something in her knows, he's not quite right. She tries to push him away because she knows he's not quite up to the job, but it's comforting to have him around, so she is reluctant to completely let him go. She isn't satisfied with or without him. It's too much, too intense, too fast. |

| Audioslave – I Am the Highway Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
To me, its like a conversation between Chris and God. (Not trying to make a religious statement, just what I'm getting here) The verses are Chris: (having a bit of a pity party) 'My superficial life is weary and tough and I'm trying to get out of here. ' The chorus is God answering: 'Silly Chris, stop whining - can't you see, I won't roll you out on wheels but I'll give you a highway to walk? I don't exist just for your benefit, but I am powerful and I am everywhere. I make you work, but I'm always with you. ' Partially why I love Chris' songs, besides his AMAZING voice, is that they really explore some interesting themes - especially God and mortality. Regardless of what you take from them, they challenge you to really think... |

| Love Spit Love – Am I Wrong Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I heard this song is about an eating disorder. If you look at the lyrics, it makes sense. The song is pretty tortured, one of the few times there is relief from his 'mood' is when 'sleep comes with a knife, fork and a spoon'. Also, the symptoms described: -pale face -dizziness/weakness ('can't stand/room turns round') -references to glass (dishes?) and seeds It almost sounds like he's talking to himself in the mirror (which people with eating disorders tend to look in often...?) |

| Jimmy Eat World – Chase This Light Lyrics | 18 years ago |

GESSO: Take it from an artist, is what you use to 'prime' your raw canvas so when you apply paint, you have an even surface to adhere. It does have Italian origins. You can buy most canvas already with gesso, because its so essential. Yes, you can also use it to paint over old paintings and start a new one. (this could be part of the metaphor here, not sure) SONG CONTEXT: He is contrasting 'Gesso' (a happy beginning/ base for a relationship like a beautiful painting) with 'last call' (an end). I believe he is saying this person is his beginning and his end; kinda like an alpha and omega thing - she's his everything, from start to the end of his life. Awww!!! Damnit I love JimmyEatWorld lol. Now, further to 'last call' is that he could be giving up his alcoholic ways for her too - a lot of JEW songs have themes of alcohol and drug abuse. |
