| Hey guys, i would tend to agree with schism86, but only on a surface level. It's pretty abundantly clear that it's about Martyrs, but we all know that Tool consistantly goes past the surface, for example, the point of Stinkfist wasn't about saying how cool analfisting is, the point of this song isn't just saying that martyrdom sucks. But it took me a long time to even form a theory about what this is about. For somereason, I remembered Maynard was at Westpoint for some time. With this view, this song could be about the people and the military. How that people only want people to do the work for them, do die for them. They can't step out of line. I don't know, much of the song seems to point exclusivly at religious martyrs,... i dunno. Im tired, peace and grease. | |

No, i think you're right on. But I think he REALLY really has feelings for her, probably used to be best friends, and some asshole guy broke her heart. We'll these two got plastered together, and they did some stuff together (horizontal polka). She didn't like that it happened that way, and nothing ever came of the two. This song is just what the title is, he's sorry he did it. And he feels that if he hadn't, they could be together. My favorite Trio song, peace grease everyone! |

| See, i see it differently. I think this song, you can take it all at face value. He sees this girl, and completely falls nose over tail for her, and drinks enough to finally get the marbles to go talk to her. He got her phone number, and compulsivly called her twice, but notice she never called back, and its been a hellish fight while sitting around waitin for her call. It never came. He still wants her badly, but its not happening. I love the trio, and sometimes, they just capture the feelin of a heart broken guy perfectly, and put that dark pull on it, the dark pull that we really feel sometimes, but never tell anyone. RAWK! Hey everyone! I just gotta say, by lookin past the surface of this song, or at least by tryin too, I get a lot more out of it. It goes past bein angry at how fake and superficial people and LA are. The word AEenma is a mixture of the word Enema, which is clearing of the bowels with fluid, and the word Anima, which is, in Jungian theory, the true inner subconscious self. It seems to me that this song is about clearing away those attachments to stupid useless shit that we don't need, and getting back to nature. He makes multiple references to mom, which is probably Mother Nature. Its about getting back to our true inner selves, uncovering what's hidden in our subconcious, and clearing away all of the shit, and learning how to swim. LEARN TO SWIM, The Full Effect |
