| Black Star – Thieves In The Night Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| If you read the book The Bluest Eye and listen to this song, it's clear that all three writers (Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Toni Morrison) are bemoaning the fact that black people are so negatively framed by white society that they internalize the framing. Perception is reality, and we allow "the bluest eye" to be the one we all want to look through. So they build the prisons for us and we obligingly commit the crimes. It's not really true that a black person can't be strong, or good, or compassionate, or (in the case of the "ugly little girl" in the book) beautiful. Of course as individuals we can be and already are all of those things. Physically we may be free, but our minds, souls, and talents are licensed. | |
| Kate Bush – The Song of Solomon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Great song. It's about The Song of Solomon, itself about a man's passionate love for a woman expressed through words, and her love which she gives him physically. "Comfort me with apples, for I am sick of love" "give me your poetry in motion...and sing it with a kiss" no words, no more "love", lay with me, "I'll come in a hurricane for you" Isolde is a famous literary character, Juliet before Romeo and Juliet, the love of Tristan Lily of the Valley and Rose of Sharon come from the KJV version of Song of Solomon 2:1,2; they're both beautiful flowers |

Proof that you don't need a lot of wordiness or a complex melody to have a GREAT song. In these few lines she describes a deep, great love. |

| Tracy Chapman – Baby Can I Hold You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I believe this song is a woman's lament about a man who doesn't communicate well. He doesn't say "I love you" or "Sorry" but he is always ready when it comes to sex. He can put enough words together to ask for sex. | |
| Prince – I Would Die 4 U Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Yes, Prince is spiritual, always was. A lot of his songs have strong spiritual overtones (i.e. Seven). Now he is a Jehovah's Witness, but he wasn't when this song came out. I agree that this song is about Jesus, and it is powerful because EVERYONE thinks it is a typical song about couple love. But right away you know it's not, "I'm not a woman, I'm not a man". |

| Prince – I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This is a very well-written song. It is very obvious what the song is about. | |
