Frank Ocean – Thinkin' Bout You Lyrics 9 years ago
@[pytiffany210:9252] Haha ya'll are funny, seriously missing his sarcasm with the beach house line and how that ties into the whole section of the song. If someone will believe anything you tell them, a common joke is to offer to sell them a beach house in a place where no beach houses exist (lake houses in Idaho people, not beach houses). Fighter jet, same thing. He doesn't have one, he's saying, "If you really believe I don't like you, you'll believe anything." Finally he ends it by calling himself out, saying "I'm lying" and then sliding out of that too by adding "down." He's playing.

Conor Oberst – Lenders in the Temple Lyrics 15 years ago
Mandala destroyed by the sea
All we are is colored sand

Could be Mandela, as he was imprisoned on Robben Island for 13 years during apartheid rule. Rather than kill him and let him become a martyr, the apartheid gov't tried to drown him away from the public eye, let them forget about him while he remained imprisoned on this island, much like aung san suu kyi today.

Smile, all that you can feel
Is gratitude for what has been
Because it did not happen

While Mandela was in Robben Island the apartheid ministers tried to cover up the protest movement he and the ANC started, making it look as if apartheid was a "policy of good neighborliness" and everything Mandela had done had never happened.

Sunset Rubdown – A Day In The Graveyard II Lyrics 16 years ago
look at it from the perspective of a man in a grave looking up, realizing that god did not create him.

If you could make another one of you then you wouldn't give the other one to me ("god created man in his own image")

You were doing something else that day ("on the sixth day god created man")

When the conductor fucks up you can't blame the symphony/So I wont blame you if you don't blame me (if god didn't create man, then man can't blame god for his own misdoings and god can't blame man)

could lead to some interesting interpretations, eg man created himself, or he is not of the natural world....

Future Islands – Old Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
oh, no. especially following a song called Pangea, and this one focusing on Pan, it seems to be about escaping the lack of the modern world, externally embodied by the death of nature (my old pan), internally by the loss of youth, irrationality, passion ('i can touch the mouths of these child gods/and these true minds that hurt man').

http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/Pan.html

long story short, pan is the god of wild nature. he chased his love until she turned into the reeds, and he was left with only the sound of the wind blowing through the marsh. he made a pipe out of the reeds and wind is kind of the embodiment of his raging wild passion.

"and the will will go up
to the crashing sails
and the crushing wails
of my old pan
this wind screams while i'm asleep
and dreams that these white eyes
will smile again"

the death of pan was announced after a voyage when the sea turned calm, christianity was discovered ('i'm a cursed hand'), reason overtook madness ('western walls')....it's a song mourning the taming of nature, the death of the ('weary sands' of) the past. he's retreating into the forest and going wild again.

Citizen Cope – Salvation Lyrics 17 years ago
I lost half of my sight
And my firstborn's life

...i think it's more in reference to what could have been, the life he would have lived with the woman that he loves (half of his sight) and his future son, if Judas hadn't killed her (/him)

I cross my wooden leg
And I swear on my glass eye

he cut off his leg and gorged out his eye trying to get rid of it. the wooden leg and glass eye are tokens of his failure

Bright Eyes – I Won't Ever Be Happy Again Lyrics 21 years ago
I think "find," in "but until that time I had better find some disbelief to suspend" is important, because it implies that he did not originally have any disbelief. He is idealistic, or drugged by the fairytales ("the lion will lay down with the lamb"), but the pain of dealing with the constant clash of reality (gravity/dead ends) with his idealism is too much. It results in the loneliness and sadness the song is about. So he has to find disbelief in the “fairytales,” be able to sustain hope for a better day while realistically knowing that it will never come. conor is exposing the hypocritical arrangement that so many people live with, and the utter loneliness that we’re left with if we don’t want to settle for that. the title of the song shows that he's not settling for the suspension of disbelief in ideals, but bc of that he won't ever be happy.

Saves the Day – The Art Of Misplacing Firearms Lyrics 22 years ago
i don't see the direct relation to sex in the title, i always thought the use of "art" in the title meant that the friend meant to misplace the firearm. like he's pretending that it's accidental but he fully intended to hurt chris ("whoops, i misplaced my gun" "whoops, i fucked your girlfriend")
