Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'll try that again.. My belief is that it's about an old couple, living with each other long after the husband had returned from a war. "So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell?" ..may be the man trying to tell his wife that she hasn't experienced the extremes of humanity and can't respect i.e heaven and hell, blue skies and pain, in the same way he can after going to war.. "And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cold breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" ..may be the wife having her say. Her husband's heroes are now ghosts and she doesn't respect his role in the war. ie it was a "walk-on" part, whereas now he's in an emotional cage forever.. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears, wish you were here. " ..and now they're just living out their lives. They see eachother as completely different people. They wish the other acted like they used to.. -- Maybe I'm glossing over it a fair bit, but this song has always struck clear to me. The beauty of this group is that you can ask ten people about one of their tracks and get fifty different explanations. :) |

The Chicks – Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song brings me near to tears every time I heard it. My brother died about two years ago, at age 26. This song reminds me of how my parents must feel, having lost a son. Not entirely sure of the lyrical relevancy, but this song really hits home. :-( |
Ben Harper – In The Lord's Arms Lyrics | 22 years ago |
This song strangely came on my random playlist the night my grandmother died. Evoked emotions I had not felt for some time. had never heard it before that night. She is all i think of when I hear it now. 'a dove caught in a storm' |
Dave Matthews Band – Bartender Lyrics | 22 years ago |
He knows his maker will fill him with the 'wine' one day, and 'fill his glass' but saying that he doesn't want to be regretted, wants to be remembered the way he wants. He is going down the wrong in life, perhaps, and wants to be changed, forgiven, and not have this pperiod looked upon as his defining moment when he is gone. 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – What Would You Say Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Several short meanings, I dont think there is a common, overbearing theme. Grab the Live at Luther college version. Just so damn jammy. No other word for it.A standout, purely for the feeling in it. Lighthearted, releasing jam. |
Dave Matthews Band – Let You Down Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I want to be all of your life. I want to 'let you down', and 'pick you up'... You are all thats on my mind, I wish you could see it for yourself. 'i have no lid, but if i did...' |
Dave Matthews Band – Where Are You Going (Busted Stuff version) Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Why pull away, and miss the possible joy you can get? ''i am no hero' , but take some time. Be with me; for with you, 'is where i belong' 'where are you going?'.....go with me....'let's go' 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – Typical Situation Lyrics | 22 years ago |
'Two's a perfect number One, well' Strikes a chord with me. Being with just one person is perfect, in my books. Being the one person alone, well.... By keeping the big door open, account for change, and allow variation between people. Accept others, and be with a second. |
Dave Matthews Band – Two Step Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I think it's a reflection on love outlasting the flesh. 'We might last a thousand years, if not for this' Invigoration, until it ends. We climb, to make sure it continues, but the existence of the end is something we cannot change. But 'celebrate, we will' |
Dave Matthews Band – Sleep to Dream Her Lyrics | 22 years ago |
He received love from this woman, who still torments him. But, I don't think she returned it in the degree he gave it to her, possibly an un-matchable extent. It is possible that she underestimated his feelings, obviously endless, as she 'held his heart so tightly', yet still 'did not know that he was there' , i take it as she didn't see just what he felt. And, 'I beg the night just to see her......just to lie in her arms'. He just wants to be with her, in her arms. I know exactly how he feels. :( |
Dave Matthews Band – Mother Father Lyrics | 22 years ago |
He seems to be having trouble seeing the world as one, when such extremes exist in it. I am only re-iterating what is said above, really. thought-provoking. |
Dave Matthews Band – Proudest Monkey Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Simple one, for sure. I think it has elements of moving out of your parent's house, or similar environmental/personal changes. I think it's about personal changes, that nobody can aprreciate but the person experienceing it. Pride comes from leaving the 'safe limbs' sometimes. Means a lot to me, this song. |
Dave Matthews Band – If I Had It All Lyrics | 22 years ago |
if he had it all, he'd stuff it up. and his desire for life, want for life, and chasing what he doesn't, but could have, is as important as actually havinbg the things. whats the quote 'the chase is better than the goal' ? something like that. 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – The Best of What's Around Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Don't have such a world-limited view. Realise that you have it better than 'most can dream' . Things we have are not defined by the amount, but the quality. So if it all gets bad, realise what you have, is better than most. If you dwell in your problems, you realise you are missing a positive sign. It's around you, not around others, make the best of it. 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – Busted Stuff Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Has been explained fully by everyone here, don't disagree with anyone, but: 'But inside is where the devil hides ' is interesting. I think Dave knows that there is more to her, but is really close to being completely blinded by her beauty, the magnetism she has. 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – Angel Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Why do I act like this so much? You do this to me, it's strange, but, damn I love you. Even when you're gone. ==== 2c |
Dave Matthews Band – Grace Is Gone Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Hard to tell exactly what happened to his love, either she changed, stopped loving him, or died. But I think it's pretty obvious that he is drowning his sorrows, and feels he will never be the same again, after losing one he so adored. His 'grace is gone', could mean, her name is grace, or her 'grace' being her trait. Or it could mean his innocence in finding a true love left with her. His grace he felt being with her could never be matched. Love will be different from now on... meh, two cents and all...love the song, though. |
George – breathe in now Lyrics | 22 years ago |
brilliant song. to me it's all about procrastination, and isolation. living for the moment. 'i dont like to see dreams put on the shelf', also she tells about herself 'i believe in for today', 'i cant press rewind' , ' i only have this one second'. I think shes worried about someone who needs to stop procrasinating. 'i just want to know youre ok' breathe in now, you're alive, do it now, dont put your dreams elsewhere for tomorrow..... |
Gorillaz – Tomorrow Comes Today Lyrics | 22 years ago |
agree with the technological viewpoint, however i think it's more how it has lead to his disassociation with the world. 'digital wont let me go' , 'dont think im not all in this world' The future is coming rapidly. 'tommorrow comes today' |
