Liz Phair – Flower Lyrics 20 years ago
PS. I just saw her at Lollapalooza this weekend, and she closed her set with this song. First time I had heard it; I'm impressed.

I think it's a joke. Not a "ha ha" joke; I think it's supposed to be ironic. It's what every virile young man would love to hear a woman say to him. What immature and obnoxious man doesn't want a blowjob queen, regardless of whether he deserves it? The irony is that he doesn't deserve it.

I also think an ironic take on the song fits much better in context with the rest of "Exile in Guyville."

The Jayhawks – One Man's Problem Lyrics 20 years ago
The guy had a relationship that was very important to him, and it is no longer, for whatever reason. He's over it, but he still loves the woman, but as a friend. He's in a relationship with someone else, and he's trying to explain to his new lover about how his old one is still an important part of his life.

I think he thinks Wiccans are stupid. That's all it's about.

Lifter Puller is a (I think hardcore) band also from Minneapolis. Presumably he is, in fact, saying "a Lifter Puller line" and the "Life Her, Pull Her" song on Seven's Travels is also a play on words on that band's name.

James – Laid Lyrics 21 years ago
Great song. The line "You think you're so pretty." is pure genius.

I'm pretty sure the one line, though is "Line my eyes and call me pretty" not "dye my eyes"

The Mountain Goats – No Children Lyrics 21 years ago
I forgot one thing. When I saw them live, this was the last song he played, and he changed the lyrics from "I hope we both die" to "I hope you both die." I thought this was a very small surface-level change, but it leads to a new understanding of the story.

One of my favorite songs of all time. So outrageously bitter, but sung in a sort of sing-songy happy manner. I like the juxtaposition.

algifari asks: "what's with the Why help with an 'am' when there's always a 'could' part?"

It's like, people say "I could be doing something to help." when they should say "I am doing something to help."

Lucinda Williams – Drunken Angel Lyrics 21 years ago
When I saw her live, she said this song was about the musician Blaze Foley, who I think she said was shot by a friend in a drunken fight. Dunno if this is common knowledge or not.

Great song. If you like this one you need to check out Night Light. The duality in those two songs blows me away.

God...this song is so incredible. I can't believe no one else has posted on it. I can't even explain it. I have a thing for melancholy songs, but even if I didn't...Jesus. It's just so real.

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 23 years ago
This is gonna be long. Bear with me here.

I've liked this song since the first time I heard it, but I had never thought about it too much. Then just the other day I was listening to it in my car and the song just clicked for me and a situation I'm currently in.

I recently started a new job, delivering pizza for a local place. Anyway, the first time I worked with a certain female co-worker, she was flirting with me heavily. Now, I'm pretty good looking, but I'm also really quiet and introverted, so I'm not exactly too great with the ladies. Heh. I was flattered nonetheless and figured I'd see where things led.

Like a week later there was a work party out at a local campground. I talked to her for a while there, where I think I basically revealed that I am in fact a big nerd, not a typical cool guy or something, which I think is what she had originally assumed about me. I also gathered from her that she, like an unfortunately large number of young woman, has very low self-esteem. She also seems to use sex as a way to raise her self-esteem or make herself think other people like her. She ended up going off with some guy for some um.. co-ed activities, I'm sure.

Fast forward another week. I see her and the guy she went off with at the party at work fairly often. She seems to be a bit clingy to him, and he seems to be kind of using her. Just my impressions.

Anyway, this is how the situation applies to the song and vice versa:

She is "wounded," a "fallen angel" and "tragedy" because she thinks she needs to exploit her body to feel good about herself. I see right through her, "naked and oblivious" because I understand her self-esteem problems and how her motivations are affected by them. She doesn't "see me," in that she has not followed up on her original flirtations with me because she (unconsciously, I'm sure) realizes that I'm not the kind of guy who will use her, (and thereby giving her coveted attention and pseudo-self-worth) even though she was willing to have sex with me.

Anyway. That's it. Perhaps I'm stretching to make the song apply; I don't know. I was just riding in my car and suddenly thought about my co-worker and her problems in relation to this song, but maybe I'm full of shit.

It's sad.
