| Murray Head – One Night In Bangkok Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think he is mixing chess with what's going on around him.... "Bangkok, Oriental setting And the city don't know that the city is getting The creme de la creme of the chess world in a Show with everything but Yul Brynner Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it All change -- don't you know that when you Play at this level there's no ordinary venue It's Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or Hastings -- or -- or this place!" He is there for the chess match... "One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free You'll find a god in every golden cloister And if you're lucky then the god's a she I can feel an angel sliding up to me" Here he is using metaphor... One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free" If you win you are the best... The bars are temples...but the pearls...the prize in the oysters..the girls..are not.. You'll find a god in every golden cloister And if you're lucky then the god's a she I can feel an angel sliding up to me The god is a beautiful girl..you'll find one in every bar...and if you are lucky the girl is really a girl...not a he-she...which thailand is notorious for... the angel is a girl...that is starting to move to him to pick him up... "One town's very like another When your head's down over your pieces, brother" He doesn't notice the beauty of the city...he is only there for chess "[COMPANY:] It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity To be looking at the board, not looking at the city" He should be looking at the city and not be so into the chess match "[THE AMERICAN:] Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town --" He is saying...big deal all cities are the same.. "[COMPANY:] Tea, girls, warm, sweet Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite" Instead of playing...why don't you get a girl? "[THE AMERICAN:] Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist Whose every move's among the purest I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine" He is not from there and he his moves are on the chess board and is not interested in the girls.. "COMPANY: One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble" Haha... Not much between despair and ecstasy One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble Can't be too careful with your company I can feel the devil walking next to me" Again...Metaphor here....the straight forward meaning is...in Bangkok the difference between winning and losing...isn't much...and no matter how good you are, you can lose...and the don't underestimate your opponent... but...he is also saying in bangkok there isn't much differnce between picking up a hot girl...and a hot girl that is a guy...so you have to be somewhat careful at first until you figure out it is really a girl or not... "THE AMERICAN: Siam's gonna be the witness To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness This grips me more than would a Muddy old river or reclining Buddha" Again...all he cares about is the game.. "And thank God I'm only watching the game -- controlling it --" he is playing or watching... "I don't see you guys rating The kind of mate I'm contemplating I'd let you watch, I would invite you But the queens we use would not excite you" Once again...metaphor....it sounds like he is talking about chess...but his mate has to do with chess, not a girl..and the queens he deals with are on the chess board...not drag queens.. "So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage parlours -- " Go back to those places, because he is not interested.. Its a fun song...very different. Peace. |

| Elton John – Daniel Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
If John's biography states this was written by bernie about a vet leaving, then it is safe to say that is what its about. I think what throws people...including myself....is the last verse which is a refrain of the first. Take out the last verse and read the first 3 in order and it makes sense. Daniel is leaving for spain (vietnam) and his brother watches him leave. The second verse is the younger brother talking about missing him. The third verse is when he comes back. It is a great song by a great writer and a great musician... Peace. |

I spent years looking for this song. I remember it from when I was a kid, but never knew the name. I would hear it on one of the classic rock stations but I would never be able to catch the name. Then one day I heard the name and the first thing after I got home from work was to find this song. Lets be honest, the sax line is the whole song. But that is enough to make it one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I gets you so jacked up... Peace. |

| Grease – Grease Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
A cool song and to me, the best song on the grease sound track because it sounds 50ish. It's about a relationship in the "constricted" 50's between a "bad" guy and a "good" girl. A relationship that everyone tells them shouldn't be. They are "different" types of people. He says "There ain't no danger we can go too far" which means that they are in love even though "society" says thay are not right for each other. He is saying that there isn't a danger of them being allowed to love each other and being together forever. He then says "we start believin' now that we can be who we are". I take this to mean that if they just start believing that they can be what they want (two people in love) and not what "society" wants (just a summer fling, get over it), then they can find happiness. "they think our love is just a growing pain, Why don't they understand? It's just a crying shame". Why don't the adults understand that it is true love and not just a "growing pain"? He can't understand and feels sorry for them that they can't see that they are in love. "Their lips are lyin', only real is real". The adults are lying to them but they know that their relationship is for real. "we take the pressure" (from everyone about them not "being right" for each other. "conventionality belongs to yesterday". The old way of thinking (good girls go with good guys and bad girls go with bad guys) is out and a new way of thinking is in (good girls and bad guys or whomever. There is no right and wrong guy for a girl and vice versa). "this is a life of illusion" (you have to "look" the part, i.e. good girl bad guy) "a life of control" (ONLY bad girls with bad guys. This way of thinking is a way of control in keeping certain people with certain people) "mixed with confusion-- what're we doing here?" They are confused about everything right now and wonder if maybe they should go somewhere where these barriers don't exist. The song makes sense if you've seen the movie. Travolta is a bad guy and the girl (can't remember her name) is a good girl. They are two different types of people, but they are in love. Peace. |

| Phil Collins – Wish It Would Rain Down Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This is a very bluesy song (thanks to Clapton's beautiful guitar work). It is cleary about a man who was in a relationship with a girl and, for what ever reason, messed it up and caused the girl pain. ("You said you didn't need me in your life...") He says that he didn't mean to hurt her ("...you didn't need me in your life...") But he has ("but it looks like I did it again...") Though she is over him, he is still in love with her and this causes him pain ("though your hurt is gone, mines hanging on...") He wishes and hopes that she will give him a sign that she still loves him and wants to be with him ("I'm just waiting for a sign"). But in a sad, very sad moment of clarity he states, "But I know in my heart of hearts, I know I'm never gonna hold you again"... A beautiful song about love and pain and reality. I am sure we have all had times in our lives where we just wish it "would rain down on me". |

| Dave Matthews Band – The Space Between Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I feel, like many, that this song is about two people breaking up and one of them still loves the other. "You cannot quit me so quickly Is no hope in you for me No corner you could squeeze me But I got all the time for you, love" To me, he is clearly talking to his/her girlfriend/boyfriend here. Dave is saying, you can't just get rid of me and what we had together just like that: "You cannot quit me so quickly". Then he says isnt' there still hope that we could get back together: "Is there no hope in you for me" and can't you find the time for me because I have the time for you: "No corner you could squeeze me, but I got all the time for you, love". The Space Between The tears we cry Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more The space between when they are crying is filled with laughter and good moments. It is these moments that keep them talking to each other and it is these moments that keep the hope they will get back together alive. The Space Between The wicked lies we tell And hope to keep us safe from the pain Here Dave is talking not about the space between the tears, but the space between the lies that tell about each other, like many people do when they break up and lie about the other person. The hope that they may get back together keeps them safe from truly believing what the other person is saying about them. But will I hold you again? These fickle, fuddled words confuse me Like 'Will it rain today?' Waste the hours with talking, talking These twisted game we play Here the singer is asking if they will ever get back together because he is not sure due to the "fickle, fuddled words" that they use. They "waste hours" talking about nonsense and small talk when he wants to talk about their relationship. She knows he wants to talk about them and he knows she knows. This ends up turning into a "twisted game" instead of them just getting it all off their chests. We're strange allies With warring hearts What wild-eyed beast you be The Space Between The wicked lies we tell And hope to keep us safe from the pain Here the singer is saying that they are friends even though they have broken up, but their hearts are really the combatants. They are friendly with each other but his heart is fighting her heart to love him again. Look at us spinning out in The madness of a roller coaster You know you went off like a devil In a church in the middle of a crowded room All we can do, my love Is hope we don't take this ship down This, to me, is the singer stating how the tension is catching up with them and coming to a head, "Look at us spinning...". They have an arguement in which, presumably, the female tells him it is over for good, "you know you went off like a devil...". But he wants them to still be friends because that means he will have a chance in the future, possibly, to get her back, 'Is hope we don't...". The Space Between Where you're smiling high Is where you'll find me if I get tickled The Space Between The bullets in our firefight Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you The rain that falls Splash in your heart Ran like sadness down the window into... The Space Between Our wicked lies Is where we hope to keep safe from pain Here the singer is talking about how in between the arguements, lies, and the laughs is where he will be waiting and hoping. Take my hand 'Cause we're walking out of here Oh, right out of here Love is all we need here The Space Between What's wrong and right Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you The Space Between Your heart and mine Is the space we'll fill with time The Space Between... The singer here is saying that they can leave that "space between" holding hands with love if she chooses, but in the meantime until she loves him again, the space between his heart and hers (his love and her non-love) is filled with time. Because all he can do is hope and wait. It is a beautiful song by a very good songwriter about something we can all relate to. The "space between" is a place that we have all found ourselves at one time or another in our lives, unfortunately. |

| Queen – Who Wants To Live Forever Lyrics | 22 years ago |

I don't know what Freddy had in mind when he wrote this song, but this is what I think: It sounds like a person that someone loves incredibly is about to pass away. And in the beginning of the song, Freddy states their emotions in words: "There's no time for us There's no place for us " In other words, it's all over. They will depart each other and never be together again. He then sings: "What is this thing that builds our dreams, yet slips away from us(?)" And the answer that I think of is HOPE. He feels that hope has, in a sense, left them. He is saying in the lines: "There's no chance for us It's all decided for us This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us " in my opinion, that the end is now near for the one he loves or the person loving him. They only have a "moment" to spend with each other and to love each other before the person passes away. Then he asks again, "who want's to live forever?" and then "who dares to love forever?" I think he is saying, that we cannot live forever, obviously, but would dare to say that you could love someone forever when you know that they are going to die? He stresses this point when he says, "and love must die". But there is a way to love and be with that person forever. He says: "But touch my tears with your lips Touch my world with your fingertips And we can have forever And we can love forever " By spending the last few moments together and not worrying about death, but instead concentrating on the love between you and that person, you can have "forever" He says, "Forever is ours today" meaning, today, the last moments that I spend with you is ours forever. But then he says, rather abdruptly at the end, "Who waits forever anyway?" I take this to mean, that the end has come and although "forever is ours today", reality has set in and death is as real as it has always been. THe song, to me, is about loving someone that is about to die. It could be about a Romeo and Juliet style love/dying, but I like to look at it differently. THe reality is that we all love or will love someone that is about to die or is dying. Freddy, of course, knew this well. I am sure he loved many people and knowing you are going to die has to have an affect on you and the people that love you. Regardless of it's meaning, it is an absolute beautiful song, musically, lyrically and vocally. Peace. |

You are all right, there is no best bass player. Not because there is some 5 year old out there that can play what Flea (why anyone would think he is the best bass player is beyond me, but everyone can have their opinion), but because the "best" is just an opinion. It is purely an opinion. P.S. Hasn't anyone heard of Stu Hamm or Geddy lee? |

| Kermit the Frog – Rainbow Connection Lyrics | 23 years ago |
|
In the begining he is saying that people think of rainbows as illusions, but Kermit the philosopher doesn't believe this. "I know they are wrong wait and see" Kermit then talks about how someone came up with the idea of wishing on a star and then asks what has it done so far? Then he tells us in a question. He tells us that it "keeps us stargazing". We are hoping to see a shooting star and make a wish. This is our dream. Our dream is to be able to have what we want (make a wish) magically. He says that it is like a spell and even though we know that it is just magic (has no basis in reality), we none the less still hope to see that shooting star and make our wish. He then talks about hearing voices. He asks if the voice he hears is the same as the one that sailors hear. Now, you may think Kermit is referring to the muses who suckered sailors into their doom. I think he is talking about the voices sailors hear that calls them out to the pleasure of the sea. As in, "the sailor heard his calling; to sail the seas." Kermit then says that he cannot ignore it, that it is real and not imaginary. What I think he is saying here is that he is destined to be a lover and a dreamer (in a sense like we all are.) And that is what I think he is saying overall here. That dreaming is not real and we are told that dreams are not real, but dreams are as real as love (feelings) and somehow Kermit is connected to them (they are all related). Of course this song was sung by a muppet so who knows, but it is still pretty deep and a beautiful song. |
