It's thought that "Lily" is a reference to turn-of-the-century British actress Lillie Langtry, "The Jersey Lily", a beauty who was a mistress of the Prince of Wales. As in the song, she died in 1929. |

Lyra said: "Btw, the "All of this can be yours" part reminds of an older song of theirs but i can't really point a finger on which..."
It reminded me at first listen of the bridge in "I Will Follow", the part where Bono repeats "your eyes...your eyes..." |

According to the Give Me Convenience CD booklet, this song was released as a handout to protesters at Dan White's prison release.
Dan White should have been strung up. |

This song points out an interesting phenomenon in San Francisco (where the DKs are from): how a city world-renowned for its liberal leanings can have one of the most fucked-up retarded asshole conservative police forces around. Constant complaints of police brutality (maybe not as high profile as LA's, but still a problem), corruption, cronyism, and generally arrogant behavior of cops, both on duty and off. We had Fajitagate (google it) out here last year and it shook the dept. to its foundation. Shit, Dan White (see the DKs parody of I Fought the Law) was a former cop, and look what he did. And there were people in SF who treated him like a big fucking hero. |

Mick Jones wrote this song while living when he was broke and had to live with his grandmother. I believe in a recent Rolling Stone he talks about this. Anyway, here he is, this hipster punk musician in a popular band, and he has to share a flat in the suburbs and just wallow in the lameness. |

Just bought London Calling, and I think this is my favorite song on it. Reminds me of my old friend and his crystal meth period. |

The last half of the song seems to be quite a nice little dig at the Sex Pistols, in particular. The Clash had very little respect for them. I seem to recall an interview where one of them (Joe, I think) said "I wish we had our own boutique too," referring to the proto-Hot Topic run by the Sex Pistols' manager. |

I like what you guys are saying, but I have my own little spin to add. When Jello sings about rich, over-educated urban types with only the vaguest notion of what it's like to be poor and marginalized, and then sings about Cambodia, I think he's talking about how the Khmer Rouge emptied Cambodia's cities of anyone with an education, money, etc., and forced them to break their backs working on forced-labor farms. I think he's saying that while that was awful for them, there's quite a few people in the U.S. that should deserve a little "re-education", to see what it's really like to be downtrodden and abused, as opposed to what you picked up in your Jazz History 101 class. |

It's about sex, JessieLynn. The whole song is pretty much one long double-entendre. It's a little less explicit than, say, Darling Nikki, but "Baby, have you got enough gas?" seems to speak for itself. |

I always felt this song wasn't necessarily about suicide. If you look at the lyrics, it could just as easily be about drug addiction, using pills to plug a hole in your life. "They'll hurt me bad but I won't mind
They'll hurt me bad, they do it all the time " that line just always stuck in me as being about drugs, but I guess it could be a guy who attempts suicide often (don't laugh, I know people who've tried MANY times). |

God damn, but this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Dirty and groovy. I think this could be one of the greatest songs of the 80's.
As far as the meaning of this song, I think if I have to explain it to you, you're probably too young to be listening to it.
Calling a girl's bedroom "the place where your horses run free" is a great line. |
