I was under the impression that Leo wrote most of the lyrics for Desaparecidos. I could be wrong, but wasn't that the point of Conor creating Bright Eyes, so he didn't have to play with a set band? He calls most of the music he makes Bright Eyes music, right? |

Martyr eulogy, read "I, Judas". It's an accound of the Passion, but from the point of view of Judas. There's a portion in it where Judas asks Mary for forgiveness. Mary says something along the lines of, "There is no need to forgive. If you had not done it, God would have found someone else to do so." So, you're not alone in your belief that maybe Judas was sort of a pawn in all this.
All that can be said about the song has been said already, so I just thought I'd throw that in there for you to ponder... or whatever. |

This is defenitely the best work of piano in any rock song, ever. The reason that Muse is my favorite contemporary band. |

That version of it really is much better. However, most of the titles I've seen of it are Radiohead feat. the Pixies. It clearly says John from the Posies is playing drums, and never actually mentions the Pixies on it, but hey. People can be stupid like that. |

Just my comments on the whole America thing. I'm an American kid, born and bred. I love where I live (northeastern USA, about 4 hours from Canada), but I realize alot of the hypocrasy that America has claimed as its own right. Also, I think our governmental systems and beliefs are out-dated or petty. I'm looking forward to going to college in Canada, to experience a different culture (Luckily, I can speak fluent French, so I will hopefully fit in better in Montreal). Also, to ThePhil, America was the last nation to do away with slavery, and went about it in a terrible fashion, planting the roots of prejudice even deeper with the Jim Crowe laws and other such injustices. Also, please, don't be so angry, it serves no purpose other than to make people group you together with all the other ignorant, xenophobic Americans who help to give our country such a bad image on the international scene. Oh, and as an aside, socialism is working fine, to my knowledge. Better than the twisted form of capitalism created by America. Just look at the stock market, and corporate fraud these days... it's a sure sign that something's wrong with modern capitalism. Capitalism depends on the inherent altruism of its members to support those without the skills or opportunity to do it for themselves... which is why socialistic legislation actually helps further the capitalist cause.
Ah... I read too much philosophy. Sorry. |

| Bright Eyes – It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends Lyrics

Well, it was OK. I don't like it as much as some of his other stuff ("Center of the Earth" is my fav, but "Motion of a Hand," "Going for the Gold," and "If Winter Ends" are right up there). I think it was lacking the metaphorical beauty that most of his work expresses. Mostly, I call this sort of writing "vent" work; IE, the author wasn't really planning too much ahead, or what he wanted to say. Instead, he said exactly what he was thinking at the time. Still very cool, but it's my least favorite of Bright Eyes songs. Which is to say, it's the least good, not even bad, really, but I prefer his more planned, metaphorical work. |

I can see the suicide thing, but I think it's more self-directed disgust ("this clumsy form that I despise" is referring to himself, showing the self-direction). I think the latter half of the song is about losing someone, but it doesn't seem to have either the "I didn't do enough to help" or "You jerk, you had no right to die" that suicide normally brings out in people. I think it might have just been about someone dying. I don't know.
The musical aspect of his music is much overlooked, I think. This is the best-built song I've ever heard. I listened to it, then had to rewind and listen to it 3 more times, checking the track number a few times so I made sure it was the same song. Seriously, next time you listen to this one, think about the intro. Now, think about the very end... mind-blowing. |

| Bright Eyes – A Scale, a Mirror, and Those Indifferent Clocks Lyrics

Or, maybe, accepting the world as viewed by yourself is limiting it to what you see. Like any image is distorted when viewed through a mirror, our own conceptions of the world are distorted when we only accept our own as truth.
Also, why is it that Conor can mix-and-match themes in his songs? It works so well, somehow. But, I can't see anyone else working it so well... another testament to his brilliance, I suppose. |

| Bright Eyes – Arienette Lyrics

I think he's done what he does so many times, with this song: taken two completely unrelated concepts, and woven them together into a song. Look at "A Scale...", it includes basically 4 different themes which, alone, would not stand up as a song, but together are just related enough to make a coherent mood, while each part tells its own unique message. Here, I believe the verses to be critiques of society and those people within it that Conor believes to be useless portions: the angry, the fragile (overly-sensitive), the sad (flagrantly depressed), etc. The chorus, I believe, is about what Sweetygal put: Arienette, whose significance I have yet to puzzle out, except maybe as a protectionist figure, is being called to by Conor, who sees her, an external entity, as being critical to curing his self-loathing (via the mirrors) and his inner demons (the wolves).
Just a psychological note: The first step out of an egocentric stage is reaching out for help, or realizing that there is something with value in your life. Arienette could stand for both of these things. Also, most people in egocentric phases would be described as "depressed," though Conor's seems to go a bit better than a temporary stage of disgusted introspection. As such, I hope that the song is a way for Conor to begin feeling better about his life and situation. |

| Tool – Prison Sex Lyrics

Well, Kade, the lyric isn't an exact adaption of doctrine. "Do unto others what you would have done unto you" is the quote, but I'm not sure if it exists outside of Catholic doctrine (as, going to a Catholic school and otherwise being part of an athiestic family, I've had no other exposure). So, Babyeater's quote of the bible wasn't actually a quote, but rather re-quoting Maynard's adaption of the saying for his own purposes. And I can see many ways the song is applicable, both as Last Shadow says, as it's written from a first-person perspective, and I'm not sure that he'd impose his own thoughts and impressions onto such a subject. However, it can easily be construed as a conceptual usage of the rape to reinforce the point of society's many rapes and the willing rapists created by such, as stated by The Edge's religious metaphor.
Oh, and I'd like to add that I really appreciate these lyrics and their interpretations, it's help me come to understand and appreciate Tool and APC on completely new levels, and the music, while powerful before, is now so much that it leaves me shaking. Literally. I thank you all for a little intelligent discourse on a brilliant band. |

I heard Haligh, thought it was good... but nothing beats the second verse of Something Vague. I don't know what it is about that verse, but it's just amazing. Like all his work. Anybody know when the new album is coming out? |
