Are you implying that someone can go "crash a mall" a la Avril and not care what anyone thinks, and therefore SUDDENLY become punk!? Punk isn't about that. Sorry. I think a more correct statement is if a band becomes thoroughly involved with a huge corporate conglomerate, such as M(ainstream)TV, and begins doing their music for money rather than distributing a message, the band isn't punk. But then again the bands on MTV were never punk to begin with.. . . And yes, I think NOFX is pretty punk. too many posts since i last come here. just wanted to make a few points. 1- to those who think she's "hot" um.. HELLO?! thats half the reason WHY she's on MTV!!! 99.99999% of the bands on MTV have "hot" members. why? two words - SEX SELLS. 2- i don't like the word poser, because it sort of connotates "IM PUNKER THAN THOU". so i'll just stick with IDIOT. yes. idiot, no matter how trite the word is, avril is an idiot. no matter HOW many interviewers she tells that she's "punk" and a "hardcore sk8r" she ISN'T. theres nothing punk about hopping on TRL with a "PROUD 2 B AN AMERICAN" shirt and a sum 41 wristband. 2- avrils out there singing songs with the word PREPPY CLOTHES in them. hello?!!?! she's SO hung up on fashion isnt she? I suppose that also explains why she's a walking hottopic poster child. 3 - in the video avril is "playing" an electric guitar. but in the song an ACOUSTIC one is what's playing. Does she think electric guitars are more "PUNK" or soemthing? there she goes again ALL about appearance and not mentality. 4 - in an interview avril says she's a "hardcore sk8r chick". but in the shooting of the video her producers TELL her to skate, and she goes "NO! I SUX!" haha. so how'd they work around it? look at the video, she stands on the board for 2.333 seconds and then they cut to the next scene. funny. 5 - to the person who said she's an individual, WHAT THE HELL?!!? she's NOT an individual. she's liking all the bands MTV tells you are punk and pigeonholing her into a subculture SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND. individual, no. pathetic fool striving to be someone she isnt, yes. 6 - Her song perfectly describes HER!! WYT: I wouldn't take it actually. Its one thing about spreading your music to other people, i mean, Thrice is doing that right now... but getting on MTV starts to screw up a band and everything. A real punk band on MTV kind of turns them into hypocrites. Punk speaks out against corporate media and such, so why WOULD they be on MTV singing lyrics like that? These are some of the reasons why bands like GC and NFG aren't exactly real punk [please no ignorant groupies come attacking me]. I just wouldn't like to see Thrice like that.
