Tool – Aenema Lyrics 23 years ago
I think it's about Maynards disgust for the LA scene.

All these drugged up cliches who couldn't survive on their own, who couldn't survive without their lattes or contracts or hairpieces or pilots... Maynard tells them to "learn to swim".

The Apocolyptic side of this song to me refers to the Hollywood perception of it. The way that instead of being the supposed God's almighty wrath of terror, the hollywood perception is that it's all special FX, and everythings big and blown up, you know: tidal waves and fault lines, etc... So Maynard's saying, if that's the case, I want to see it all crumble then, just like a movie.

This Apocolyptic side of the song may be linked the views of L. Ron Hubbard who is mentioned aswell... he was the founder of scientology which is basically a religion purely based on money. Go and see the movie "Battlefield Earth", that was based on an L. Ron Hubbard book. It just so happens that many big name actors are scientologists, it seems to be trendy. E.g: John Travolta and Tom Cruise, etc.

Also the title Aenema: an aenema is the flushing out of waste fluids from congested bowels. Therefore, La is the bowels or sack of shit if you like, and Maynard wishes to see the entire area flushed out... so he tells the inhabitants to "learn to swim". He wants the shit flooded out of the place... the shit is listed in his "fuck such & such" section.

Also, you'll notice that Arizona is below California, so "learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay".

Tool – Useful Idiot Lyrics 23 years ago
I think it's interesting how in the CD booklet for Aenima, Useful Idiot's time is 6:03 and H is 0:38 or something like that, which is precisely the times for eachother's song. Perhaps, Useful Idiot is actually the title for the song we know as H, and vice-versa. It would kind of make sense, judging by the lyrical content of track 3 (i.e: morose, in a word, could be self-loathing), and the title "H" would match the ambiguity of track 4. Just a thought.

Tool – Intermission Lyrics 23 years ago
Don't try and give this song a deep meaning. It is, like elderlymechanic says, jackin' off music... ie a joke, not commentry on death or whatever.

Tool – Prison Sex Lyrics 23 years ago
I love this song, and like many Tool songs, it uses a sick and crude subject matter on the surface to get across a deeper meaning. I'd say it's about the vicious cycle, that the victim can become the bully through growing up with the trauma, to put it simply.

Tool – Crawl Away Lyrics 23 years ago
Yeah, it does, dosn't it?

I can really relate to this song, to me it's about rejection from the opposite sex, and the confusion and anger this can cause. Right now I'm sick of fucking women general, no offence.

Tool – 4 Degrees Lyrics 23 years ago
I believe personally that it's about forcing things unto other's, but yeah, Maynard just uses the anal sex connotations to get his point across. But like many Tool songs, they are open to numerous meanings and interpretations.

Tool – (-) Ions Lyrics 23 years ago
You know that weird modulationg sound near the end? Well, that sounds like it's cycling through the Order of Harmonic Overtones, I can't remember exactly how it goes but it's something like root, octave, 5th, etc... and theoretically it goes on infinately. You can create that type of sound by spinning a thick, long piece of ribbed flexible plastic piping in the air at varying speeds, or by doing harmonic glissandi on certain stringed instruments such as the guitar.

Pantera – 25 Years Lyrics 23 years ago
It sounds like it's about Phil's abusive father, he puts so much emotion and feeling into it.

Pantera – Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills Lyrics 23 years ago
It seems to state the obvious, but I wonder if it's entirely serious. Maybe it was just a song written to see the public's reactions... then again maybe Phil really did sleep with her from forehead to rib-cage. Meh.

Tool – The Eggs of Satan Lyrics 23 years ago
In reference to Russian Tea Cakes, I've heard "Tea" to be used as another word for hash.

And who knows, if you make it with the magic words, you might open a gateway to hell or something while you eat them. Or go insane. hehe.

But seriously people, just remember Tool have a sense of humour (although very dark/ sarcastic at times), and I think they're just mucking around with this one.

Opeth – The Moor Lyrics 23 years ago
I thought it may be refferring to Shakespere's tragedy "Othello".

Othello is a well respected military commander in the play, but is usurped and back stabbed because he is a black man with power. I know that "Moor" means swamp, but in the play, people refer to Othello as a Moor as a derogatory term about his skin colour. In relation to this, the first two verses could be Othello's return from battle.

This verse:

"I was foul and tainted, devoid of faith
Wearing my death-mask at birth
The hands of God, decrepit and thin
Cold caress and then nothing
I was taken away from my plight
A treason bestowed to the crowd
Branded a jonah with fevered blood
Ungodly freak, defiler"

Could be Othello taking a subjective look at himself, how the common people think he is a freak and ungodly, of lesser blood, the "death mask" perhaps being his skin.

It's just an idea, I myself don't believe this but I can kind of interpret it as this.

Yeah, it has that effect on me too.

Opeth – Blackwater Park Lyrics 23 years ago
I heard that the name Blackwater Park was taken from an obscure underground 70's prog. rock band... I think bands like Opeth are big fans of proggressive music.
