The Phantom Of The Opera – Angel of Music Lyrics 19 years ago
I've been singing this all day...

I love it, what can I say?

There oughtn't be any need for explanations as to what each song means because I daresay it is painfully obvious.

Has anyone else seen the snippet from the music video for this? You can find it on the secret site. Promises to be really good. I can't wait to see the whole thing... why am I hearing The Art of Drowning in my head? Nevermind. ^_^ "Lie in the comfort of sweet calamity..." Yeah.

Not quite clear on the meaning. Will come back soon. Maybe.

You're right, it's not. It's a newer AFI, one that's changed and evolved. Where else could they go after the Art of Drowning? That was perfection. It would have been degrading to them had they just stayed with that same style; the songs would sound similar after a while, no matter how good AFI is. ^_^ I rather like this new style. I can't wait to see what their next CD will be...

Divican: good noticing skills. I take it you too are an Anne Rice fan? It does fit in the books, though I haven't read a lot of them. Library troubles. They don't carry most of them, unless I want to go to another city's library to get them. Whatever. It does fit well. Kudos.

Sliminem, yeah, I miss those days too. It was fun making an ass out of myself and those around me. ^_^ The next debate? Maybe we should try to define emo. Or something a bit easier; the meaning of life, perhaps? Heh. Dunno.

Uh... Did I really write the comment above mine? Seriously, I must have been pretty damned high up on insomnia, jeez...

By her, I meant my sister. She was having some trouble with a friend of hers whose attitude bears a strong resemblance to that of "Little Claudia". Just ignore the paragraph I put after that. Incomprehensible, practically. Also ignore the paragraph after that. I was extremely tired when I wrote the comment, don't blame me. ^_^ Have fun, all.

AFI – God Called In Sick Today Lyrics 21 years ago
You all wanna get into religious meaning? How about god takes a day off and takes a look at what's going on in the world. It (I refuse to give god a sex) sees what's wrong in the world, sees all the problem created by it and the bible, and thinks on it. Rather than cry it laughs. Its thoughts make the angels cry. Mother may be a term for the virgin Mary, if the writer believes christ is god.

How's that for a religious meaning? I don't even believe in the bible or any of it's oh-so wonderfully brainwashed sects of worship. I believe in a sort of god, though. Not a religious vision of one. Considering that, I think I did rather well.

Agree with me, disagree with me, whatever you want to do. Just avoid bashing me. ^_^

AFI is awesome. This song is awesome. Those who disagree have a right to do so. If no one ever bashes anyone or anything, then everyone's happy, right? So just let it go and use this board for what it was meant for: song meanings. Well, song comments should also be allowed, I think, but that's beside the point. I'm rambling.

Fuck the world sounds like a good interpretation to me. Of course, it's gotta have more than that but I can't into that right now because my oh-so possessive cat issitting in my lap, scratching me and rubbing herself all over me. Plus, my bum's just plain gone numb.

AFI – Girl's Not Grey Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, first things first. I'm going to tell you what this song does not mean to me. It's not about sex, not about suicide, not about God or religion, and most definitely NOT about a relationship. I think it may be about loneliness. It also may be about destiny. If you think about it, it fits in really well with the chorus. But it can also just be about thinking. Or both. Or all three. It's all possible. Urgh...

I'll put the chorus definition for me. Just as a note, I believe that "What follows" is the beginning for each of the other incomplete predicates in that stanza, for lack of a better term. It's kind of proven by the way it's sung. It'll be a line-by-line interpretation.

"What follows me as the whitest lace of light"
- Most people are thinking of follow as in 'He's following me'. I am thinking of it differently. It's really, really difficult to even imagine explaining it. Okay... when lightning strikes, thunder follows, right? Well, the thunder is heard after the lightning is gone (depending on your proximity to the lightning bolt, but that's not the point). In time, the thunder bolt is closer to us, yet it follows the lightning bolt. If ya don't get it, that's okay, because I'm not good at explaining things like that. Okay, having that clear-ish, what will come after him (most likely his future, or a future generation) is bright, probably with promise.

"What follows just begs to be imbrued?"
- The future, what will come after him, begs to be stained with blood (the meaning of imbrue). This symbolises sacrifice. For the future to be bright, it will need, or it will want, sacrifice.

"What follows will swallow whole"
- This means that it will engulf the present. It will be so large, it will take away from, or swallow, the past.

"What follows has lead me to this place where I belong with all erased"
- This is where the destiny idea comes into play. The future has brought him where he is now, and so it is where he belongs. That implies destiny. With all erased could mean with his past forgotten, as in a fresh start. Dunno. That's a bit harder to fit in, but it does, somehow.

So, what do you all think of my too-long chorus meaning? Something special, or something delusional? Whatever you think, go ahead and express it. To each his (or her) own, right?

Robotnik sucks. ^_^ That's my perspective. Black Sails, for his information, is in the past. As in behind us. They've grown, gotten older, and gotten better. They've change to suit themselves, and they're not going to just stick to one particular sound throughout their careers. That, to me, is what real selling out is. Finding out what style will be popular, and staying with only that sound to continue being popular. Their entire CD is a mix of styles, and all the songs sound different from one anther, which can't be said of a lot of the popular bands these days. Live with it, jack.

In my following post, I will put the song meaning as it is for me. This one was special, just for robotnik.

Great song. I enjoy the fact that it's overplayed because I am one of the few people I know that will sit for hours with just one song on the "Repeat" option. I'm a nutter, I know. Feel free to run at me frothing from the mouths with torches now. I feel the need for some Frankenstein parallelisms. Don't bug me about the word usage, I don't care.

Evanescence deserves the glory they get. I wish I had the excess money to get their CD, but my family's poor, and I'm not old enough to get a job. Sucks for me.

I want to randomly ramble on forever, but I'm not entirely sure that it would be appreciated. Whatever. That's my problem. Y'all don't have to deal with it.

Anyone else ever gonna comment?

Love the song. When it first started getting played on the radio, it fit perfectly into a situation that was going on with her. No explanations, but very ironic for the family.

Not quite the right meaning. It's very obvious, though. It's from the point of view of a brother, or friend, et cetera.

Also, I;m pretty sure this is a screwed up version of the lyrics, or maybe not the whole song, or something. It just reads weird. Doesn't go with the song. Whatever. I'm insane anyways, why should it matter?

Yeah. Tired, pessimistic me, stopping talking now.

Everyone's been thinking in terms of relationships for all the song meanings, and we all should know that their lyrics go beyond that. It takes digging past the surface, which takes more time than most people apparently want to give. Oh well. I just figured that no one would end up reading my useless post here. If you do, don't take offense, okay?

Seems kind of like a 'world sucks' basic theme.
"I hope to destroy the outside, it will alleviate and elevate me "
He wants to destroy the world. Simple. Possibly a 'think outside of the box' theme as well. Dunno. Just wanted to bring a different perspective in.

Simple as that. Trying to fool yourself and others about what you really are. It's human nature (generally) to try to fit in, and if someone likes how someone else looks or acts, they're more likely than not going to try to copy them in some form or another, even if it's against their nature.

Has any one else seen the music video for it? It's actually somewhat disturbing. If you haven't seen it, you can find it on the official AFI website. Go to "Music" and on the top left corner, the very top, mind, it has a few selections. EPs, Vinyl, and such. It should also have a section called "Videos" go there, and the first, and only, one listed is the on for Girls not Grey. Oh, in case anyone here doesn't know (which would be very surprising), the official AFI website is afireinside.net. Just a bit of information for those who are interested. ^_^ Have fun with it.

Death? Possibly. I, actually, would like to see someone try to give definition to the chorus, which no one has been seeming willing to attempt. I'd give it a shot, but it likely as not would be a rudimentary attempt at best... Okay, I've been sitting here staring at my screen now for a whole half hour and the only things that have come to mind were the connections between this song and a lot of the others from AFI. I've been plagued for around half a year with the possibility that all AFI songs have some underlying, connecting ideas. Thinking about all the possibilities with this song, it does seem rather possible. Consider: Morningstar; "I don't want to fall into the light" and Girls not Grey; "(What follows) me as the whitest lace of light (Will swallow whole)". There are other things, as well, but I'd just go insane going through them all. Yeah, I am well aware of the fact that I am totally and undeniably insane. Deal with it.

Well, for all those that are interested in the meaning of "imbrued" but are too lazy to look it up themselves, I'm posting it right now.

imbrue: to wet, soak, or stain, especially with blood.

That's just what my dictionary says. I'm sure there are other definitions, but this is what I've got for it.

The song, I'm not too sure about. It seems to have a forgiveness attitude about it, but that's not the only thing. It's also desolate, a sinking into depression, perhaps? An emotion left after something highly emotionally distressing is a definite possibility. Great song. Love it to death, even though I didn't like it at first. When I'd heard it the times before the CD was out, it sounded too soft and pop-y for me. Then I heard the rest of the CD and immediately fogave it and started to love it just as much as all the other songs on this CD. I'm in love with AFI.

As for the song, and CD, a lot of it has the feeling of a relationship gone wrong. There's another one that does as well. Though that one's got more of a "You hurt me, get the hell away" theme. Goddess, I love AFI. They are perhaps the largest part of my life. *Sox*

I don't understand this completely, but so far what others have for this song doesn't fit for me. I does seem of an end to a relationship, but not how the others have, so far, described it. And it needn't be a relationship with a female, you know. It could be with anyone.

"I... I came here by day, but I left here in darkness
And found you, found you on the way
And now, it is silver and silent, it is silver and cold
You, in somber resplendence, I hold"
He came there in hope, perhaps, or happiness, but left in sorrow. Between the happiness and sorrow, he ran into this one, this person. It implies that the person possibly had something to do with what caused him the sorrow. Eveything is silver now, the memories, preserved and brought to the fore. Cold in that the feelings they once evoked are now gone. And he holds this image of this person, this somber, serious person. Perhaps to remind himself, though there are no implications to this.

"Your sins into me
Oh, my beautiful one
Your sins into me
As a rapturous voice escapes, I will tremble a prayer
And I'll beg for forgiveness
(Your sins into me) Your sins into me
Oh, my beautiful one"
This person had probably blamed it on themselves, perhaps they felt that they were somehow bad for him, had done too many bad things in their life. And he, he is saying that he doesn't care; that he will take the person's sins from them. And this rapturous voice is probably the woice of the one he's taken the sins from. As they are freed, of perhaps it is forgiven, he prays, probably to have the person's sins cleansed, or to be forgiven for taking their sins.
(There is another way to view this verse. It is possible that this person had done things to him, bad things, and that is what is meant by "Your sins into me". He still cannot see the badness in this person, or perhaps believes that there is still beauty in them, hence "my beautiful one". This rapturous voice may be a symbol of the glee this person takes in their passing of sins; their bad doings. And he is perhaps praying to be forgiven by the person, such as in an abusive relationship.)

I would go on, but you get the idea. Besides, I am dead tired. If anyone wants me to continue this, just PM me, or post it up here. To be quite honest, I'd be very surprised if anyone did. And if there are any parts that you don't think fit to what I've put up as my point, tell me. It may help me clarify my opinion, or see it in a new light. Or, I'd just end up explaining it to you, whether it makes sense or not. Personally, I'd prefer the former.

"Sometimes, I feel as though, if I looked in a mirror, it would crack; shatter itself into the perfect reflection of the many sharp, jagged pieces of my soul." ~SoS~ (me, by the way)

It's possible that that's what the song's about. Hmm... I don't know. I've always had a wide variety as to what the song means just in my own head. I heard someone once suggest that it was about suicide, and that makes sense. I also think it makes sense that it's about how we're unknowing destroying our selves / our world. I think that mainly because of the line;

"Asleep you set the fire,
In your own house"

It just always represented to me unwitting destruction. I don't know. Just a feeling.

But now I also have to ponder about the whole "friend dying of illness" idea as well. And it also fits.

Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics 21 years ago
Unfortunately, it's not enough for most people. Putting themselves into a certain label, or category, makes them feel more like a part of an exclusive group. I know I've felt that way many times in the past when starting getting into something little known, and will assuredly feel in that way in the future. It's human nature to want to be a part of a group, to fit in, and by creating labels and "scenes" they find or make themselves a group in which to fit in. In my current school, being goth, punk, or any other so-called "outcast" group has become a clique. A year ago, there were about 20 kids that fit into that category. Now, there's closer to 200. It's because everyone wants to be a part of the rebel group, to feel individual. I'm not saying that goes for everyone, but it goes for a majority of them, I think.

Enough sounding like a stuck-up know-it-all. I have school tomorrow, and must finish my weekend homework assignments. Bleh...

When you said "And none of your malarchy about different perspectives of perfection" did you mean not to do that anymore, or did you mean that I didn't do that in my post? Either way, what I say will always be the same. It is not malarky to me. And it is spelled "malarky" just to let you know. Dictionaries can be quite useful when checking spelling.

"the inconsistentcy between different humans" Do you happen to realize that perfection doesn't happen to include that everything be the same?

As it is obvious we will never agree on this subject, how about we drop it? I'm getting tired of repeating myself over and over again. And I'm sure that everyone else that visits this page is sick of our arguing. So, lets agree to disagree and leave it at that. This time I promise on my grandmother's grave that I will ignore you if you try to continue this debate. There's no point in debating our points to eachother when we are so set in our beliefs that we won't ever come to an agreement over it.

Now, you do realize that I don't care any more about your opinion than the dirt I walk upon, right? Good. Glad to have straightened that out.

I still want a reason why perfection is impossible, though. Saying that no philosopher ever talks about it because it is so widely accepted is no answer to what I asked. I wanted a reason why it was impossible. You are making it seem as though you are trying to cover up your lack of knowledge with meaningless excuses. With the way you speak of philosophy, I would tend to think it is so.

I have grown up in house with two highly philosophical parents, so do not presume to tell me that I do not know about philosophy. I am always listening to their philossophical conversations, an joining in on them. I am starting to believe that I am more of a philosopher than you are. You are closed-minded to concepts different from your own, and you give no reason for what you think. You make it seem as though the only philosophy you know is that which you have read in a book, or heard someone say to you. You seem to have taken it as truth, the only possible truth, when no mortal on this planet could come up with an absolute truth.

"If the human body was perfect everyone would hav ethe same capabilities, humans can't fly." No one ever told me that flying was part of being perfect. Perhaps you should recheck the book from which you read that to make sure that's really what it said. If the human body was perfect everyone would have the same capabilities? Where did you come up with that? Or rather, how far up your ass did you have to stick your head to come up with that statement? That is perhaps the most idiotic fucking thing you have said in this entire debate. I am talking about bodies here. The intricate chemical processes that allow us to be as we are. Not our physical capabilities. Not our mental capabilities. You take from what I say things that are unrelated and use those things to make yourself feel self-righteous.

For the poor persons having to suffer through us debating like this, I am sorry, but we can't just drop it. It is something that means allot to both of us, and we need to get through it on our own. Please excuse us for it.

I think you misinterpreted what I said. I said that none of us were really lecturing. That included you. And I said absolutely nothing to which you should have taken offense, as you seem to have done.

Well, we have all already agreed that I sounded like a snob, myself included, so could we please just drop the subject?

I can understand things that are not typed in perfect grammar. Sometimes it just takes a while to understand some of the weird things people type, like "g8". It took me a long time to finally figure that out.

You and I have different views on philosophy, then. I view philosophy as a means to an end. I use my philosophy to better understand things, like people, and life. I do not believe that philosophy should just be something used to pick out the problems of a theory.

I'll ask you again, why is perfection impossible? You gave no reasons in your earlier rant. Tell me, though, who told you perfection is impossible? Or did you read it from a book?

Who here is to say that what either of us says is jibberish? Neither of us, surely. We are blinded by our own views on this matter. And tell me, where is the justification for what you say? It can just as easily be said that what you have said is jibberish.

I already have told you something that is perfect. I did not say humans, I said human BODY. That means the shell we live in that contains our soul, spirit, whatever you wish to call it. Which human on this earth would have been able to plan out, let alone construct, a body such as ours? It is beyond most human abilities to even conceive of attempting to create a new life form that works as well as ours. Can you tell me that you could create a new life form, a body, that has all the proper hormones, chemical reactions, and such?

You see, perfection is only impossible because it is beyond the human comprehension to create it.

And yes, people do suck. But as noted above, I was talking about our bodies.

One more thing; don't take it easy on me because of my age. Debate with me as you would with someone your own age. I don't like being taken lightly simply because I am young.

One more thing. I'm sorry, but you make it seem as though the modest comment was only for your benefit, which it seems as though it was. Believe me, no one on this page gives a damn if an 18 year-old is debating with two 13 year-olds. I've debated with a 20 year-old, and no one cared. People going "your an idiot for picking on little girls" is not likely in the least.

I would rather that you didn't lessen your lectures on our behalf. As you said, we are smart for our age. I may not agree with you, but maybe you'll say something that I never thought about before, and make me open my eyes to a subject I never even knew I was ignoring. And aside from that, you weren't lecturing. None of us was, really. We just tactfully insulted eachother. Yes, I did talk some philosophy, but it wasn't much, and you just told me that what I said wasn't dumb, but it wasn't correct. I would actually like for you to tell me why philosophy dictates that perfection is impossible. And, please, don't be afraid to go over my head. I don't think much of it would. Just try to use maybe a bit more of proper grammar, so that it makes more of an impact, because reading philosophy that is typed like "and that is why every1 is such an dumbass" (I didn't say that you typed like that, just giving an example of poor grammar) just kind of slips past my attention.

I have to go make my bed. I won't get the new book in a series that I like unless I do.

Bai!
