Jennifer Knapp – Martyrs and Thieves Lyrics 21 years ago
I fall asleep, some dark nights, with these words singing in my mind. The past is not beautiful and my own darkness often beats me to my knees. When I'm there, staring into the haunted halls of my heart in despair, then comes the question all over again: "Could it be, that my worth should defend by the crimson-stained grace on a hand?"

And though it takes awhile sometimes, to hear the answer, it always comes and it never changes:

Yes.

Jars of Clay – Jealous Kind Lyrics 21 years ago
This is perhaps one of the hardest Jars songs to listen to, even harder to sing-- to recognize the willful rebellion, willful betrayal. For we'd all "rather feel the pain all too familiar
Than to be broken by a lover [we] don't understand."

There's something almost scandalous about love, how it disregards propriety and reason, and simply pursues the object. What is it that scares us from God's love, why do we "choose the gallows" even after tasting Life?

Personally, I find the heart of the (altogether deep) song in the last lines. The barriers, whether the need for intellectual justification of faith (the hardest struggle for me), the spectres that call us unworthy of this love, or simply the desire for self-sufficiency--- all crumble in the force of this unrelenting love. Emotions of worthlessness, the arguments for or against God are deemed insignificant in the face of Truth.

And so, I am "finally subject...to grace."

I love that image, that grace, so freely humbly offered in Jesus' death, commands my humility in response. Perhaps that is what I fear most, perhaps that's why I flee-- the idea of finding myself as a subject scares me. To be loved by anyone, most of all God, requires loss of control, requires acceptance of the strange, life-altering gifts he'd like to give us. Gifts like joy and peace, so foreign and rare that we've discounted them as illusions and settled for pursuing less.

But... he's still running after us. What if, this time, we stopped?

This song seriously broke my heart the first time I heard it.

Just thinking about how Jesus drove the money changers and merchants out of the temple.

Too bad we've come full circle.

Lifehouse – Hanging By A Moment Lyrics 23 years ago
Ok, I think I'll stay out of the deepest of the mud... I personally (feel free to bash me, but do it off this board) don't consider Lifehouse "Christian," as they have said that they don't wish to be considered a Christian group. What their personal beliefs are, I don't know, but as a whole...

That being said, nothing's stopping you from finding whatever meaning you want in this song, and people, please stop the bashing in general. I personally believe in God, but I don't see my value as a human going up or down as a direct result of that. Nor do I believe that intelligence can be measured on a single scale. If you can't respect, try tolerating.

(But then, on the other hand, everyone has the right to attack everyone else. ...ok, I give up.)

Powerful Modern Worship Songs – Here I Am To Worship Lyrics 23 years ago
this is written by Tim Hughes, but I don't know of it being released on any CD's... besides, it belongs in this category. oh, and if you have Win Zip and room on your computer, http://www.geocities.com/henrydueck/worship_songs.html
has over guitar chords and lyrics to over 180 worship songs...

Anyway, I first heard this song at camp this summer, it was basically stuck in my head all week.... It's an awesome song.

Operation Ivy – Missionary Lyrics 23 years ago
"man of many names but the motives stay the same/
my actions are a means to an end"

Aimed mainly at the church (think crusades), but I think speaks to anyone who uses the result to justify all the evil things the've done. Life doesn't work that way.

Newsboys – Breakfast Lyrics 23 years ago
Well, whether or not you like these songs, users do have a right to post favorites. Just as punk and metal are not confined to concerts, or pop to nightclubs, Christian music is not confined to churches. Musicians have the freedom to write what they will, and listeners have the right to listen to what they will.

Music is not defined by its general popularity, in fact, music cannot be defined.

Unfortunately for your ears, blinkfan, monasteries are hard to find, much less get into, in most of North America, and vows of silence do little to help society at large.

For the record, I consider myself a Jesus Freak. The label has strangely never held any stigma for me.

Creed – My Sacrifice Lyrics 23 years ago
ok, first, I can't believe that I actually read through all the bashing (from all sides) and anti-bashing and random neutral thoughts. (I have too much time:)) TheInvisibleOne, I totally agree with you. (Scroll WAY up to read their post).

I personally don't get too much out of this song, though. I mean, it has a message (I go for the 'finding yourself' one) and all, but it doesn't really hit me in any way. If you like it, great.

My personal beliefs on some of the topics discussed here(you are free to stop reading):
-I believe that God loves everyone as they are, but wants to change them for the better.
-I believe that people are always going to have strong opinions about anything remotely connected to religion, and that respect is therefore necessary to debate properly.
-I call myself a Christian, Jesus Freak, Child of God, and many other labels that have been thrown around here. If you don't consider me a Christian, that's fine. Labels are useful, but God doesn't need them.
-I believe most of the generally accepted 'Christian' principles, but I'd like to point out that according to Jesus (whose teachings are the basis of Christianity), all that is required to be considered a Christian is to admit and confess your sin, believe He is God, believe that He died and rose again, and accept Him. It's a mouthful, but less than the entire New Testement.
-On the topic, I personally believe the Bible is from God, but when you mass-produce anything, printing and translation errors can occur. That's when you have to learn Hebrew and Greek =)
-I'll keep this simple- I believe that religion and politics is one of the most dangerous combinations known to humankind.

Sorry for only connecting...10% max. of this post to the song itself. I'll stop wasting space on your scrollbar soon. If you are offended, feel free to send me a private message. This message board is getting a bit full.

Switchfoot – Only Hope Lyrics 23 years ago
Well, being a Christian, I see this song in a Christian context, and it is truly beautiful to me. (I personally prefer the Switchfoot version to Mandy Moore's, but that's probably just my bias.) jesusmyheartadoresu, I agree. God is the real world. He's the one that controls relationships, love, and every single person we run into in life.

Music is one of those things that wows me, mostly because it's transcendent- anyone, anywhere can enjoy it. To me, the true power of a song is more in the listener than the musician. I could keep going on this topic, but I guess I'm rambling as usual...

Rebecca St. James – Wait For Me Lyrics 23 years ago
exactly what everyone else has been saying. It's about waiting for that special someone that God has already picked out for you. to me, it's not just staying pure physically, but also being willing to wait for God to shape you and that someone until the day He brings you together. Also, there is a lot of ways to lose parts of yourself. When you are involved emotionally with a person who you know isn't that someone, even if you never have sex with then, you still are ripping out a part of you and giving it to them. Be careful not in just what you do with who you date, but who you date.

They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics 23 years ago
Definitely about a bluebird shaped night-light across the room from a painting of a lighthouse. That being said, the God comparison is an interesting metaphor, with the "simple message," "birdhouse in your soul" and obvious "guardian angel" references. Or you could take the comparison farther, since the lighthouse is used as the 'original' light and the nightlight is kinda trying to follow it's example. Unsuccessfully, with "killing Jason off" and "screaming argonauts," but trying. Maybe the nightlight is someone trying to follow God? Or some amateur angel? Yeah, I know I'm over analyzing, but I enjoy it. I like this song though. Reminds me of my old nightlight... it was an orange owl though.

Point of Grace – You Will Never Walk Alone Lyrics 23 years ago

Yes, it's about waiting, staying pure.

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord , "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

God knows what He's doing, and it's good.

Thousand Foot Krutch – Small Town Lyrics 23 years ago
I've never actually heard this song (there goes my credibility:)), but when I read that line I thought she would be talking about Jesus to everyone she knew. I also thought of the verse: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved" [Romans 10:9]

Well, I don't know if the word 'One' is capitalized in the official lyrics, but as is, it does imply that someone is talking to their friend about Jesus. And yes, He is the answer.
