Cut Copy – Going Nowhere Lyrics 19 years ago
it's about how scary settling down can be. i think we all are inclined to think if we aren't progressing forward we are failing at life in some way. this is about losing momentum and feeling as if that's a bad thing, yet knowing it's not that bad if you care about who you're with.

Cut Copy – Saturdays (Reprise) Lyrics 19 years ago
okay this song sounds like everything that was good about 1990s rock. it's perfect in that way. it's like a tribute to musical heritage.

it sucks it's so short, but i think that is a very telling element of the song. it's like saying all good things can't last forever and pass too quickly while they're around. however, the important thing is that you had them because you'll always have the memory / feeling they gave you. the last ten seconds of the song consist of the sound of a tape being rewound and i think this inclusion is important to consider in such a short song. to me, it represents nostalgia and an attempt to relive the good times. it also ties back to the idea of the 1990s...like trying to craft the perfect mix tape and having to manually rewind rather than digitally skipping back.

overall, it's a good song but it is pretty emotional because it does conjure up feelings of nostalgia. you have to keep hitting repeat until you realize you are kind of stuck in the past in a way. i think it is an interactive listening experience. i hope this made sense haha

The Thermals – A Pillar of Salt Lyrics 19 years ago
OBVIOUSLY:
Genesis 19:23
"The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. (24)Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; (25) And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. (26) But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

Anyone who wants to know more should read the story of Lot.

At the same time, this song explores the human reaction the Bible leaves out.

The Magnetic Fields – Young and Insane Lyrics 19 years ago
I know S. Merritt is from Williamsburg and there really is nothing to do there. Aside for the historical significance, the only things there that are 'thriving' is the College of William and Mary and Busch Gardens (which isn't mentioned in the song). Being from a town like that, as well, I can see how this song is about a bunch of kids trying to have a good time in spite of their lack of resources.

José González – Heartbeats Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is a cover. What's sad about it is that this song is getting so much more play than the original when the original is so much better. The radio station doesn't even credit this song as a cover. It's tragic!

The Knife – Heartbeats Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favorite song ever. I can't ever get sick of it and I've been listening to it on repeat for three months. Can this be love? And it totally blows away Jose's version even if he did get his COVER featured in a Sony ad.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, in listening to this song, I think an interpretation of it might come from Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and many of you may be familiar with it as it was recently sensationalized by the movie "Capote." Truman formed a very close relationship with one of the killers, Perry, whom he got to know while researching the book. It is under debate whether the nature of this relationship was fraternal or romantic. After killing the Clutter family, Perry fled to Mexico with Dick, whom he helped in the crime. Aside from this, throughout his entire life, Perry had been teased for being feminine and small. He also had dreams of a giant yellow bird coming to rescue him from his every peril. I seriously doubt this song is about Capote's relationship with Perry, but who knows--it's a powerful book that produces strong feelings and responses. It also was Capote's last work as he was not able to finish anything after writing it. Regardless, there are a lot of parallels between the book and this song so I thought I might mention it.

Kind of Like Spitting – Boy Cries Wolf Lyrics 22 years ago
Well, there is a very strange typo in the title. "Boy Cries Worlf" is strange because r is on the other side of the keyboard, opposite of both o and l.

Regardless, this is a really cute song. Go listen.

Bright Eyes – Touch Lyrics 22 years ago
this is obviously about breaking up, but it's a certain type of break up. i think it's an amicable parting; the boy and girl want to be friends, but it's hard to let go of the romantic feelings.
"touch, lying on the floor
wishing this could last
but knowing that it can’t
and soon you will leave"
I think that's their last moment as lovers, and then it shifts to being friends and the disbelief and shock that they are no longer lovers begins to set in and how he misses his relationship with the girl:
" you are new and near now to someone you used to love when you were young"

It's a very difficult situation to be in and I think this song expresses it perfectly, but ya know. room for interpretation.

Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics 23 years ago
i love this song. i like to scream the lyrics while i'm driving my SUV; quite the contrast, but technically, it's my dad's SUV.

my favourite part is: "as they take eye for an eye, until no one can see, and we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history."

and i'm pretty sure the stanzas about public action figures and repeating history concerns 9/11. I can't tell if the part about whiskey and pills is a suicide attempt (by means of drugs) or a drug overdose (on accident.)

not to detract from the greatness of this song, but don't you think his voice sounds like Michael Jackson's in Thriller. Sure his voice has an astounding range and all, but still it makes me think of "THIS IS THRRIIIILLER..."

vincent van gogh painted "The Starry Night" and he's calling the girl he's addressing Miss Vincent because the stars in her eyes are big and bright, as they are in the painting. How redundant was that? Hmm you should look at the painting; it's one of my favourites.
