when i hear this song i tend to relate it to my own current experience, and i interpret this song to be about two people that really like each other, but are both holding back because they feel they cant really be together ('it could be so much better than this'; 'as much as i would like to i cant put my hands all over you'). the narrator really wants to be with this person but are confused by them: that person cant make up their mind whether or not to go for it ('i cant be held accountable if you cant make up your mind'), and also the other person's feelings intensify the narrator's ('i dont want you to love me anymore...than enough'). these uncertanties about the other person also cause the narrator to have some doubts about the other person's feelings and what the other person really wants from them ('if i gave you everything would you still listen to me'). because the two are parted, the narrator can only imagine what they could have together, but thinks that they will never know because they can never be together ('if i came home one last time, think of what the two of us could do. i guess we'll never know.') |

this song for the most part is about, inspired by?, anne frank- jeff mangum has a kind of fascination with her, or so i've read. he is one of the most talented musicians i've ever heard... AWESOME cd, its a necessity to everyone's collection. anytime a friend asks me to recommend a band, its always neutral milk hotel first. |

why wouldn't a 17 year old write something like this? i've been through that almost exact thing as well as worse and i'm 17... and i've written plenty. but meh i guess its not important i just didn't understand why that would be anyone's first thought, or second or third or fourth thought for that matter. |

hey punk rock kids- allisterrocks, allistergirl (i too am a big allister fan), whoever else- i have to agree with you all in some ways. her music's not punk rock. i enjoy it, especially this song, but she's not punk rock. her style rocks but i mean, that's really different than what punk rock is all about.... musically avril is talented and its great to see a chick covered instead of busting out of her clothes and playing her own music- a new singer/songwriter- but its not some kind of paving the way for riot grrrl kind of thing. we have yet to see that, and personally i'm not to sure i want to, i enjoy NOT hearing it anywhere but my own stereo. this song is interesting the way she switches from "he was a punk" to "skater boy" but all in all i love the message. |
