The Smiths – Death of a Disco Dancer Lyrics 23 years ago
I always thought this song was about the AIDS crisis and the contempt people showed thsoe who were dying of it in the late 80's. I remember the AIDS jokes. We've come a long way from those days but at that time it was scary how people thought it was so funny that gay people were dying of this disease. It was chilling. I remember being more afraid of people finding out I was gay than dying of that disease. fortunately I never contracted it!

The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics 23 years ago
Chloe--right on. No doubt about it. I experienced this song in real life too many times to count. I recall having beautiful women coming on to me all the time and not being able to respond. I resented it. I hated myself for being gay (at the time). Whereas having these women hitting on me should have made me feel great, it made me feel suicidal because I felt like I was letting the whole world down.

What a f'ing revelation the Smiths were. Finally somebody was writing about my life and issues a little deeper than "Material Girl" and all the other drek of the time. The Smiths came out of nowhere and were truly original.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 23 years ago
In the States--this is definately the Smith's Big Song. I was just coming out at the time and I hated the gay life so I retreated into the underground club scene and this song was singing my life. I'd go to a gay bar and feel alone and scared and lonely. I remember distinctly feeling like straight people thought we weren't human and didn't know that we wanted to love another person just like they did. Then when I went out to gay bars I saw all the promiscuity and predatory behaviour and I knew I'd never find anybody worth a damn in those places. Now that I'm a grown up I don't feel like that at all and have had great relationships, but at thetime "How Soon is Now" summed it all up.

The Smiths – Reel Around the Fountain Lyrics 23 years ago
I'm with you Kez. This is without question my favorite Smiths song. It floats effortlessly along between happy and sad, humor and desperation. Just beautiful. To me, this song is all about growing up and having your first relationship and the fierce emotions that brings. It's about that magical time right as you're about to lose your innocence IMO. Why this song never gets the attention it deserves is beyond me.

The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics 23 years ago
hmmm--never heard of that book but I'll check it out. Love this song. I recall being in my mid-twenties, sitting at Auditorium Shores park in Austin at dusk listening to "Louder than Bombs" on my little boombox. Everything seemed so centered and serene listening to this song. There'll never be another Smiths--they made such a huge impact on my life. Happy and sad at the same time and that's the genius of their songs. Morrissey got too formulaic in the 90's but nothing will ever touch these Smiths songs.

The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again Lyrics 23 years ago
Serious? This song is a hilarious indictment of Morrissey's own big mouth! He is the Joan of Arc of this song and the flames he's talking about are those he brought on himself by mouthing off about the royal Family, Madonna, and too many other subjects to name. That's why I loved him--his crackpot statements and acidic wit were second to none in the music business. People who didn't get the humor in the Smith's songs were totally missing the point.

Labelle – Going Down Makes Me Shiver Lyrics 23 years ago
Nona hendryx is a gifted song-writer and these lyrics show how easily she can fit double entendre into almost every line. You're never quite sure if the song is about baptism, spirituality or oral sex. If Mick Jagger or David Bowie had written this song it would have been famous but people just weren't ready for this kind of strong message coming from a woman IMO. Anyway--who cares? The song rocks.

Labelle – Chameleon Lyrics 23 years ago
I think this song is about spiritual transcendance to a higher conscienceness (sp). I belive it's all about leaving behind race, sexual orientation and class to become something higher. One of NOna's spaciest and best songs. Hearing Nona and Sarah howling at the end is spine-tingling. Great song.

Labelle – If I Can't Have You Lyrics 23 years ago
To me this song is about love that turns to obsession and then to anger. One of Labelle's best vocal throwdowns--one that would make girl groups of today run for cover.
