I was suprised by how well this song flowed together, even though she's offering some really complex and compound sentences as lyrics: "Do you derive joy from diving in and seeing that loving someone can actually feel like freedom." I also have to admit that I enjoy this song because it lists off the things that I'm looking for in a lover.... you've gotta love a song that you can really relate to. |

Too many people seem to think that she seems to believe that the relationship was wrong only because he was older than she -- that's not the case, even though he was in fact older than she was. (BTW, it's rumored that it's Dave Coulier of "Full House" fame, who is also supposedly the subject of "You Oughta Know." Alanis remains tight-lipped). The song seems to not mention the fact that he's older than she was, but more the fact that he manupulated her, used her, and pushed the fact that they were in a relationship into the closet. The fact that he pushed her into a lack of self-confidence and made her feel like she was less than she was is what the song explores, IMHO. |
