i don't know i dont think this song is about some one he replaced easily, rather the opposite. she is someone he cared about but things just can't work out between them. he sounds really bitter and 'replace pathetically' makes me think she wasn't fully replaced in his mind. he calls her skin perfect too, suggesting she is the pinacle of something in his mind. |

i don't care what he wrote it about.
i think poetry, which is basically what this is, is open for interpretation when you put it in a public forum. it is what it means to you.
this reminds me of my relationship with a boy. he tells me he likes me but stopped calling and seems distant when we talk. he lives 3 hrs away when im not at school and i feel like i'm losing him and it hurts terribly because he is the only one i've got. |

personally this just makes me think of a woman who has gotten screwed over so many times that she just gives up on men and treats them all they like have treated her - like nothing. she thinks sex means nothing, love means nothing, etc.

i love this song, it is beautiful. and it is an amazing book.
i don't really see this or the book as a love song. or rather, a traditional lovesong in the sense that tomas loved tereza, but he didn't associate the typical notions of love with the love he felt for her. ie, he constantly slept with other women because he wanted to explore every option.
in the end they die together. |

it should be "it's that when i'm down and out it's you i miss"
