While u are thinkin, i believe this to be Linkin Park's best song from both albums, although there are no bad or even mediocre apples in either bunch. My only question is WHY DIDN'T THEY RELEASE IT AS A SINGLE SOONER? |

Wow, don't you guys realize that shitty pop songs don't have to be interpreted? They don't say anything intelligent or deep, just "i'm cool so buy my cd".
Now go try to figure out a real song! |

Wow, there sure are a lot of opinions on this one! I see that my brother, Wang, has posted here also. Looking through the opinions, I saw many that are close to my interpretation of this song. However, while many of you are centering around capitalism, i see this song referring to a totalitarian form of government. As we all know, a dictatorship inevitably corrupts those with power, and a totalitaranism cannot stand for long. Eventually, it degrades to a final Fall(U.S.S.R.). In such a society, the government owns EVERYTHING. In this song, SOAD asks "how do you own the world?, How do you own disorder?" The truth is you cannot, and such a government will invariably fall into its own disorder. SOAD paints a vivid picture of a Russia-like empire in ruin.(Flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of a truck-referring to the millions of homeless poor and those displaced by the state, like the Nazis did to the Jews.)
"Eating seeds as a pastime activity" could very well refer to the extremely limited amount of things to do in a society where everything is either owned, censored, or banned by the Government. "The sacred silence" obviously refers to death, and dictators have a tendency to devalue human life b/c of their power to kill so easily(Hitler, Stalin, Romanov). At the end, Serj may very well use his cryptic message about the sun and Man's heart to show what the rise of capitalism and a free government has done to this world. |
