Okay i know this is way out there. But i always thought this song could be from the point of view of Mary Magdalen. Jesus being the man she knew and him teaching her what it was to cry. The chorus deals with when she went to his tomb and found that his body was no longer there. That she devoted her life to this man and that she was left feeling torn and unsure about. You may think im insane, but its just the way i interpreted the song. |

this is also one of my favorites. when i heard it me and my then gf at the time agreed that it would kind of be our song. whenever i would tell her that i loved her i would say always #40 as kind of a joke. i still love this song and it reminds me of her and the fun we have. always #40 meg. |

I think if anyone knew U2 and the spiritual journey they have been embarking on for the last 20 years, then you would truly know what this song is about. I agree with dta2k8 in saying that this song is about heaven. Many times when the play this song live, at the end the Edge and Bono sing a chorus of Hallelujahs. This song is about going through the pain of life but being able to withstand it because of what we have to look forward to in the afterlife. "home i cant see where it is but i know im going". |

I also believe this song is one of their best. Once i heard this song i knew i loved it and i even had a great chance to sing at a great restaurant one night and this was the song i chose. For me, my favorite line is one of the last "I know it's out there, I know it's out there Somehow here is gone" At that point, i looked at my waitress and sang that line to her. To me the song is about a bittersweet relationship, and he knows that he can't be everything to this specific person. But he doesn't deny that somewhere out there is the person he can be everything to.
