I think he means mentally healthy, not depressed and alone.

I think this song is about major label acts that have benefit gigs that mean nothing. Bands that donate portions of there millions to starving third world kids, but really do nothing. They never blame anyone, always playing it save. They never donate a significant percentage of their wealth just "crumbs at their convenience". It's all about feeling good about yourself, and not really helping the starving. An obvious example of this is that shitty "We are the world" or "Do they even know its Christmas". Where all these pseudo intellectual artists make one big shitty song that changes nothing, to try to make it seem like they care. Bono could sell his mansion and really try to help, but he doesn't. They're all part of the united artists crusade. |

I think what the clash meant by 10 times worse, was that if you work your whole life at one job and waste away doing nothing, it is worse then spending a small amount of time in prison. I think the whole point of the song is that life is short (hence SOMEDAY YOU'LL MEET YOUR ROCKING CHAIR), people aren't meant to work like slaves in pointless jobs that consume your whole life just to fuel capitilism. I think the point they are trying to make is working a job like that, is like being in prison (or 10 times worse haha). |

Ok. This song is about the OKA crises, which happened in Canada. A golf course wanted to expand its property onto native reserve land. And they did. But a group of Indians living on the reserve took their hunting guns and made the workers stop jopping down trees. The police came in and the natives and the police faught. The police tries to gas them but the wind pushed it back in their faces. 1 cop died (hence the start of the song). Anyway more natives took places over all over quebec. Riots occured and alot of anti-native racism starting coming out. If you were a native in quebec you couldn't go to town because they'd push your car over and beat you up and shit. Anyway the army came in. The feud was settled, the canadian government bought the land and then gave it back to the natives. This song focuses on how its wrong to take someones sacred land just for some shitty golf course. And Oka was either the golf club name or the reserve name or something....i forget. |
