I could be wrong but I think the lyrics are from the husband's perspective and how he is second best to his wife's other lover whom she is having an affair with. Husband and wife go on a vacation together and just go through the motions that "once were so inspired" when they were first married and in love. He's trying to justify his wife's affair by saying it's ok cause he needs a rest, perhaps from being first in her life and from getting her full attention, since now see's giving that to someone else. He thinks "what's so wrong with second best anyway?". He's settling for less than he deserves. So yeah, that's what I get from this song. |
