going along with the threads of some other arguments, my personal view of this song is that the father is god, and the son is mankind. the son is taking what the father has given him - life, freedom, etc - and using it to his own desires. when the man stands there twisting, it's because his son (mankind, that is) has taken what god has given us and twisted it to his own fitting. i see the connection from the chorus to the verses, although not as clearly as i'd like. possibly this song, like so many other dave songs, had the chorus and verses evolve somewhat separately? or i could just be fitting the puzzle together right. here's what i do get from it, though: as stated in the last chorus, if one hand is open and the other hand holds the gun, presumably from the boy's p.o.v. this would mean that we do truly hold the key to our own fate in our hands, but our whole world comes back from god, who tells us, "well, take care of it, please / it's the only one." and, of course, i'm not saying this is by any means totally correct, nor is it the only possible explanation. it's just what floats my boat, y'know? :o) |

i adore this song, because it's so classic madonna. she's all about pushing the limits, and people KNOW that, and yet they try and blame her for doing what she wants to do. the line "i'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me" is, to me, the one line of any madonna song that says the most about her. i love that she says what she wants. and not only will she not listen to you when you tell her she's not doing what she "should" be, she fights back... |

| Eminem – Without Me Lyrics | 23 years ago |

personally, i think this was a smart move on eminem's part to have this be his first single off the new album. while it can be argued that this is one of his less meaningful songs, and it could even be perceived as stupid, it certainly got people's attention and made everyone remember that yeah, eminem's still here, and he's still controversial. i think it's very odd how, for eminem, this song actually isn't THAT bad. most of what he says is said (rapped?) in a tone from which you can tell that while he means it, he doesn't MEAN it (did that make any sense?) yet despite the fact that this song was one of his less meaningful, it still got people angry. i, for one, think eminem is an absolutely brilliant person. he is fully aware of the game he is playing, and who his audience is. he knows what to say, how to say it, and when to say it, in order to get the desired response out of audiences. there was a long period there where he was just a bitter individual who had a lot of anger management to do. now that he is - to my knowledge - done with all of his court cases, and he's got his daughter back, he's more controlled. he still is defiant and willing to be annoying just for that reason, but he has an air of confidence that didn't used to be there. he's more of a normal person who you don't worry about becoming a crazed psychopath, for one thing. i don't know how to describe it, but i feel like with his new album, he has turned into a person who has seen it all and has an attitude of, "i have seen it all..." to me, this is a change for the better. his lyrics are less "fuck y'all" and more "this is what i have to say, take it or leave it". to Truth: i don't know this for sure, but i got the impression that the verse about moby says the he should get "stoned by OB" as in, Old Dirty Bastard, or ODB, or OB. i honestly have no idea, though, and i could be totally wrong. |
