This song made me think of when Bush said "we" were going to war with Afgahnastan or whatever. . .I'm 19 so I thought " Oh shit if this gets big enough I might get drafted" which would piss me off, such bullshit that they would make someone fight for their beliefs, even if the soldiers belief is different. Plus it pisses me off that so many people are like "Kill anything with a turban!" |

To StarEyedGirl, from what you wrote it sounds like you think that a band being Christians makes them "suck", or if they don't "suck", its very surprising or amazing. That is so close minded, Christians are people. . .just like everyone else, they just have a different set of beliefs. So, if Dustin writes the lyrics, and he is Christian, or simply a beleiver in God, then there is almost no way that some of Thrice's songs are going to be directed towards God in Dustins mind. I may have taken what you said the wrong way, so I apologize if I did. But if you are talking about religious responses to what the lyrics mean, then you are an asshole. If not I am. Hehe. . .but this sight is meant to let people express what THEY think its about, not what it was originally written about. So it really bothers me when people bash others when they find connections to God in things. Ok, I just have to say a few things, first to mcm42085, you said "Why Civil War? The context of the entire song (battlefield, guns on shoulders, sleeping in tents) can be traced to the Civil War. " thats just silly. . .there has been a battlefield in everywar. . .guns are generaly carried on shoulders, and what else would they sleep in while at war? hotels? Second to, everyone who says it absolutely without a doubt cannot be about Jesus, quit being so close minded, the stories do have similarities, I personally dont believe thats what they had in mind when they wrote it but it is possible, and you try to disprove this point of view with non-Christian views, which works in your mind, but doesnt work to disprove, since things like "Jesus was not a leader, man made him out to be" If your Christian(which if this song was about Jesus the writer would most likely be) you believe that He really is the leader, not just by mans placement of that title. And to schiesse, quit being an ass. you say christians see jesus in everything, well it seems you would deny Jesus being the subject of any symbolic song, only thinking Jesus is written about in worship songs during church. Anyway, I thought I'd add that I know that at least one member of Dispatch is a Christian, i think its the drummer that is for sure one. One of my friends talked to him at show and got his drumsticks and he is definatly Christian. |

I'm kind of confused as to why everyone thinks this about falling in love with a best friend. . .its obviously about falling in love but the "best friend" line seems just to say "will you be my girlfriend" cause thats what a realtionship is, best friends, just with kissing and what not. maybe im missing something, but it seems like it could, but doesnt have to be about a friend. |

Hmm, kind of sucks that almost all of the comments for this song compare it to Blink 182 material. That's probably exactly what Tom and Travis wanted to avoid ( although it was inevitable). Anyway, the meaning of this song is pretty clear. It's about standing up against the government and not letting them completely control us, to stand up for what you believe in even if it goes against authority's view of what is right. |
