As someone who experiences chronic insomnia, I can tell you that sometimes insomnia, especially a prolonged spell, usually due to trauma, can cause minor to violent fits of paranoia. To me, the lyrics display just that: he can't sleep, and he's afraid to, but staying awake is slowing eating away at him; the only alternative is sleep, but he has no control over what he sees. No book or piece of writing is fully empathetic to explain why these things are happening, so they're rendered useless, and he's probably having a horrible time coming to grips with an incident he might have lived through (ie- a car crash, NOT the holocaust). That's what I get. |
